UEFA President Gives Ukraine Two Months to Show Euro 2012 Progress

UEFA president Michel Platini says Ukraine has two months to get back on track with its preparations for the Euro 2012 championships.

"Ukraine has two months to show what it can do. We cannot waste time any more," Platini was quoted by AP after his meeting with Ukraine president Viktor Yanukovich on Thursday.

Platini raised the prospect that Ukraine could still be stripped of the tournament it is co-hosting with Poland if renovation work on Kiev's 63,000-capacity Olympic Stadium, which is five months behind schedule, does not accelerate.

He restated the UEFA executive committee's warning that if the Kiev stadium was not ready, Euro 2012 would not be held in Ukraine. He said the venue must be complete by June 2011.

Both Ukraine and Poland are each slated to stage matches in four cities.

Speaking after his two-day visit to Ukraine's host cities - Donetsk, Lviv, Kharkiv and Kiev - Platini said he trusted organisers to deliver on their stadium pledges.

Platini said he had told Yanukovich in the meeting that UEFA needed guarantees from the government. Yanukovich himself admitted last week that preparations were "in terrible shape".

"President Yanukovich gave guarantees that the work would be done and that he would do everything for the government to follow this," Platini was quoted by Reuters.

"There is no Plan B ... no Plan C," Platini added.

UEFA's major concerns for the Euro 2012 championships are the stalled Kiev project, slow progress on the 30,000-capacity Lviv stadium, and the shortage of hotels in Donetsk.

Platini described the situation in Kharkiv as "positive" following his visit to the city on Wednesday.

According to a DPA report, Borys Kolesnikov, the Ukrainian overseeing Euro 2012 preparations, said on Wednesday that the government was injecting almost $3 billion of state funds this year into stadium and airport reconstruction in Kiev and Lviv as well as transport upgrades in all host cities.

Poland may host Euro 2012 alone if Ukraine not ready

WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland may host Euro 2012 alone if Ukraine's stadiums are not ready, UEFA project director Martin Kallen said during a visit to Warsaw on Wednesday, May 12.

Matches at the tournament are scheduled to be held in four Polish and four Ukrainian venues but economic troubles, a severe winter and political tensions have exacerbated delays in Ukraine's preparations for the 16-nation tournament.

"As long as we can play in four cities in Ukraine we will go for it. If that is no longer the case then we would look for other options... One of them is to play more games in Poland," Kallen told reporters.

"It does not mean that new venues would be needed. The tournament can be played at four stadiums," he added.

The four Ukrainian venues for the tournament are the capital Kiev and the cities of Lviv, Donetsk and Kharkiv.

The former Soviet republic was given a two-month deadline to speed up its preparations, mainly work on the Kiev stadium which is due to host the final and on the stadium in the western city of Lviv near the Polish border.

Kallen said the decision on whether Ukraine would host the tournament in all four cities would be made in coming months.

UEFA's representative was happy with Warsaw's preparations but added there were problems with the airports in the three remaining Polish host cities -- Wroclaw, Poznan and Gdansk.

There were also question marks about work at two of the stadiums, he added.

"I can say more about the problems with the stadiums in Poznan and Wroclaw once I visit them," said Kallen, who is due to visit the cities on Thursday.

It would be a real shame if Ukraine missed out because that would exclude 2 amazing stadiums and one amazing city for fans.
