Today it is difficult to believe that 30 years ago, there were only three small tram networks in France.

Love the idea of integrating the poles with the station design. France always does the urban space around tramways really well.

Le Mans opens second light rail line
THE second light rail line in the French city of Le Mans was inaugurated on August 30 by the city's mayor Mr Jean-Claude Boulard, and member of parliament for Le Mans Mr Stéphane le Foll.

Line 2 services start at Bellevue station in the northeast of the city, traversing a new 3.4km €90m line to a junction with Line 1 at Préfecture. Line 2 trams continue through the city centre on Line 1 tracks as far as St Martin, where they diverge onto the branch to Espal, which previously operated as part of Line 1.

The first 15.4km phase of the network linking Université in the north with Espal in the east and Antarés in the south opened in 2007. A 13-station Line 3 is also planned which would run from a junction with lines 1 and 2 at the city's main station to the southwestern district of Allonnes.

Alstom supplied eight additional 30m-long Citadis LRVs for Line 2, taking Le Mans' total fleet of these vehicles to 34. The city's light rail operator Setram has recently upgraded its existing 26 vehicles to meet the latest regulations on passengers with reduced mobility.

Aubagne opens zero-fare tramway
A town of 46,000 inhabitants situated east of Marseille, inaugurated its first light rail line on September 1.

Quote:
Like the town's bus network, no fares are charged for travel on the tram line, making it the first free-to-use light rail system in France and one of the first in Europe.

The 2.7km line has seven stations and links the main line station in Aubagne with Charrel. Construction began in early 2013 and the project had a budget of €166m including rolling stock.
Services operate at 10-minute intervals using a fleet of 10 Citadis Compact low-floor LRVs. The 22m-long three-section vehicles accommodate up to 125 passengers.
The Urban Community of Pays d'Aubagne et de l'Etoile decided in April that it would not proceed with construction of the second or third phase of the network, although the community's president Mrs Sylvia Barthélémy announced at the opening ceremony that the municipal government will study the reopening of the 14km Valdonne railway north of Aubagne as a light rail line.
The proposed line would serve an area with a population of 60,000, linking Aubagne with Roquevaire, Auriol, La Destrouse, and La Bouilladisse. At present there are around 18,000 car journeys a day on the road between Aubagne and La Bouilladisse, and 110,000 vehicles per day use the motorway linking the area with Marseille.

Re Aubagne: Surely the figure of €166m for 2.7 km of tram line cannot possibly be right?

Not, 166 M€ WAS for the global project : on the map by urbanrail, red section (2,7 km) and pink sections (10 km, cancelled), and rolling stock for whole net.

Strasbourg orders Citadis trams
20 Oct 2014

FRANCE: Alstom has signed a framework agreement for the supply of 50 Citadis trams to Strasbourg. An initial 12 trams, worth €41m, are expected to enter service by the end of 2016.

The trams will be put into service on Line A and Line D, both of which are being extended and therefore need a larger fleet. Line A is being extended 1·7 km south to Illkirch-Graffenstaden and Line D is being extended 3·9 km over the German border to Kehl. The vehicles will therefore meet BOStrab standards.

The 45 m long trams will have capacity for 288 passengers and will include wheelchair spaces. They will be equipped with LED lighting and full glass doors. Assembly will take place at Alstom’s La Rochelle plant, with components coming from Ornans, Tarbes and Villeurbanne. Bogies will be supplied from Le Creusot and Salzgitter

Angers launches LRT Line B consultation
Thursday, October 23, 2014

PUBLIC consultation is set to begin next month on plans for the construction of a second light rail line in the French city of Angers.

The 10km Line B would link Belle-Beille in the west of the city, running along Avenue Patton into the city centre, where it will briefly share tracks with Line A before turning east along Avenue Montaigne. From here it will turn north onto Boulevard de Deux Croix and Boulvevard Alloneau to reach the eastern terminus at Monplaisir.

The project will include a short link between Line B on Avenue Montaigne and Moliére station on Line A which will create a light rail loop in the city centre.

The total budget for the construction of Line B is expected to be around €250m. Public consultation is due to conclude in the second quarter of next year
