***Nigerian Faces Death For 86 Wives***
Nigeria's Islamic authority has told the man who has 86 wives to choose only four and repent within three days or else he will be sentenced to death.
The Jamatu Nasril Islam (JNI) passed their verdict on Mohammed Bello Abubakar, 84, according to Sharia law. This comes two weeks after the Nigerian press and the BBC reported on the case. Talking to the media then, Mr Abubakar challenged Muslim scholars, saying there is no punishment stated in the Koran for having more than four wives. However, Mr Abubakar advised other men not to follow his example and marry 86 women. .. ![]() Faces death! That`s barbaric! Nigerian government needs to keep the Northern part on check. Increasing population in face of poverty will affect the nation`s environment seriously. ![]() ![]()

Are you guys saying having having 86 wives when you don't have the means to take care of them is wrong or the other way round? Beacuse I don't see anybody complaining about MKO Abiola's 40+ wives.
The hypocrisy in the North is just too much, the so called elites have got loads of women as wives but the poor and illiterates among them suffers and face persecution when issue like these surfaces.

Man with 86 Wives Agrees to Divorce 82
Alhaji Muhammadu Bello- Masaba, whose marriage to 86 wives has attracted much controversy, has agreed to divorce 82 of them, an Etsu Nupe Palace Official said. The official, Alhaji Umar Edota, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Bida, that Muhammadu agreed on Saturday night, to retain only four of the wives, in accordance with the Holy Quran. Edota chairs the five-member committee of Islamic scholars set up by the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, to handle the disengagement. He said the agreement was reached at a meeting between Muhammadu and the Etsu Nupe, at about 8 p.m. in Bida. At the meeting, he said, Muhammadu informed the Etsu Nupe of the mass divorce, and sought for more time to return the women to their parents. Edota said Etsu Nupe accepted Muhammadu's request for an extension of time to relocate them and set up his(Edota's) committee to guide Muhammadu, adding that the committee expected to commence action yesterday, would ensure that the women were duly relocated. He said Muhammadu was expected to present written copies of the agreement to the committee. Edota explained that part of the agreement included a photo-shot with each of the four wives. NAN recalls that Muhammadu had explained that he married the women on divine instructions, saying that no part of Quran forbids anyone from marrying more than four wives. |

Nigerian with 86 wives released
![]() Mr Bello Abubakar was picked up in a pre-dawn raid A Nigerian man with 86 wives has been released on bail from police custody 59 days after he was arrested. Mohammed Bello Abubakar, 84, was arrested by order of an Islamic court for refusing to divorce all but four of his wives. His lawyer told the BBC Mr Abubakar should never have been arrested and his human rights had been violated. There is no law against marrying more than one woman in Nigeria and polygamous marriages are common. But Mr Abubakar's case has raised eyebrows because of the large number of women he married, and because he claims God told him to do it. Mr Abubakar, who claims to be descended from royalty, told the BBC in an interview he had flown to heaven and had spoken with the prophet Muhammad who commanded him to take as many wives as he could. 'Heretic' He has angered Islamic authorities, who called him a heretic. One organisation placed a fatwa on him calling for his death, but the penalty was commuted to "banishment". He was picked up in a pre-dawn raid on his house in Bida, Niger state, and charged with "insulting religious creed" and "unlawful marriages". The charge of unlawful marriage has been dropped. He had obtained an order from the federal High Court protecting him from being arrested. A judge will decide in December if the court that charged him violated that order. Lawyers for Mr Bello Abubakar said he had not broken any law. Mr Abubakar says there is no punishment stated in the Koran for having more than four wives. Niger is one of majority Muslim states in Nigeria that have reintroduced Sharia punishments since 2000. Sharia courts have sentenced several people to death for adultery, but none of these sentences have been carried out. Muslim scholars agree that it is allowed in Islam to have up to four wives, as long as you treat them equally. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7725413.stm |
