NEW A320 TAKES PASSENGER FLEET TO 25 AIRCRAFT

(HONG KONG) Dragonair has taken delivery of its ninth Airbus A320, which increases its passenger fleet to 25. The purchased aircraft, which features the airline's new cabin interior, is scheduled to enter service at the end of this week, by which time the airline's 10th A320 will have been delivered.

"The delivery has been timed to allow us to meet demand over the busy summer holiday period," said Chief Executive Officer Stanley Hui. "The new aircraft will operate on secondary routes in the Mainland, allowing us to increase frequencies to cities such as Hangzhou and Nanjing and to enhance Hong Kong International Airport as a gateway to the China Mainland."

The single-aisle A320 is powered by V2500 engines from IAE, and can seat eight passengers in Business Class and 150 in Economy Class.

Airport awards organic farming prizes

(HONG KONG, 10 July 2003) – The Airport Authority (AA) reaped an unusual harvest today. It awarded prizes to the most outstanding crops and gardens planted by primary and secondary school students in a six-month organic farming competition at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).

“We have always stressed good environmental practices and sustainable development since we started building the airport in the early 90s,” said AA Airport Management Director Howard Eng. “This farming competition continues that tradition as the participants made use of composted kitchen waste from restaurants in the passenger terminal. This contest also symbolises the spirit of co-operation and innovative thinking that characterise the airport community.”

Under the airport’s waste recycling program, unused and unserved food are collected and placed every day in a special waste eliminator and two composting units. The facilities produce chemical-free fertiliser for vegetable gardens and airport landscaping. This programme helps reduce the need for landfill space. In addition, waste water from the terminal is also treated to irrigate the gardens and other green areas.

The competition was organised by the AA in conjunction with the Hong Kong Government’s Environment Protection Department to foster awareness of organic farming. The Produce Green Foundation of Hong Kong provided technical advice and training in the care of vegetables such as lettuce and brassicas and other plants like mint and marigolds to provide chemical-free pest control. Mr. Eng also thanked the airport’s catering business partners for participating in the recycling program, among them Maxim’s, Windows-on-the-World, Banana Leaf and Bravo le Café.

In the property business, where location means everything, Hong Kong International Airport has it all. Here, 85 hectares of prime non-operational land are available for a range of real estate developments. The advantages of location are clear. The airport has an immediate catchment of 6.73 million people (2001 figure) - Hong Kong's population. Beyond lies the Pearl River Delta, China, and the world. With its round the clock international air services and its efficient road, rail and sea links to urban Hong Kong and the broader region of Southern China, the airport is, quite simply, the stepping stone to a vast market.

The focus of the development is on the North Commercial District, which has a site area of 45 hectares and a GFA of 1.4 million sq m. A new convention centre will be built and amenities will follow :

Air traffic controllers in short supply

Hong Kong, China, Jul. 15 (UPI) -- Hong Kong will soon face a shortage of air traffic controllers as senior controllers recruited from overseas depart, a local paper reported Thursday.

At least 60 of the 220 air traffic controllers will be leaving in the next few years, the South China Morning Post reported. They are part of a group of 90 recruited from overseas before the opening of the new Chek Lap Kok airport in 1998, one-third of whom have departed already.

Chek Lap Kok handles 630 flights per day on average, with a record high of 746.

One controller told the paper he was worried that present training was insufficient to replace those leaving and retiring. Civil Aviation Department head Norman Lo said his department was aware of the problem and was trying to recruit more young people and raise them more quickly to senior positions.

It takes about seven years to train a new recruit to the level of radar controller, the paper said.

Airport gets $2b projects off ground
HK Standard Staff reporter

The Airport Authority, the statutory body that operates and maintains Hong Kong International Airport, said it plans to invest HK$2 billion by 2010 in an effort to boost returns.

The authority, which plans to seek a listing on the local bourse, said one project is a HK$1 billion investment in SkyPlaza, the integrated multi-modal transportation centre that will extend the passenger terminal.

The project includes construction of a covered coach station, airline check-in facilities, 30,000 square metres of retail and entertainment facilities, and a 15,000 sqm office block to be used as the authority's headquarters.

Another HK$1 billion will be spent on its SkyPier project, which is aimed at attracting mainland travellers using ferries linking the airport with Pearl River Delta cities. It is operated by Hong Kong International Airport Ferry Services, a 60-40 joint venture between Chu Kong Shipping Enterprises and Shun Tak-China Travel International Logistics Investment.

Airport Authority commercial director Hans Bakker said the authority is looking at a minimum annual return of 10 per cent for its new investment projects. Meanwhile, Bakker expects passenger numbers at Hong Kong International Airport to surge to about 36 million this year, compared to 27.67 million last year and 34.2 million in 2002.
