10x, Ovem.

Look at our glorious new stations

Seriously , they aren't anything special but they do look good and tidy. The city has a lot more to show, despite that metro is the latest development of that caliber.

Sofia opens long-delayed subway line, 28 years later
8 May 2009
Agence France Presse

Authorities in Sofia on Friday opened a second stretch of its sole subway line, 28 years after work first began.

The new stretch, running south from the city centre, has five stations and is six kilometres (3.7 miles) long, but has yet to be connected to the existing section of line.

That section, running west from the centre, opened in 1998. The two sections are scheduled to be linked towards the end of the year.

By 2012, authorities also plan to build another line and have a total 27 stations over 31 kilometres (19 miles).

Sofia, which has an estimated population of over two million people, is the first Bulgarian city to have a subway.

Plans for the underground date back to 1967. They were approved by the government in 1977 and construction work started in 1979. Work on the section of line opened on Friday started two years later.

Financing problems, however, delayed the project which aims to relieve heavy traffic in the city centre where whole stretches of road are almost permanently jammed on weekdays.

The design looks rather obtrusive. Is there a particular reason they opted to go for the covered trench?

(You'll have to excuse me if this has already been addressed, I've only looked at the latest photos and am rather too lazy late on a Friday night to go through the thread. Feel free to insult me if it has already been answered. )

I think it's because of noise, but I'm not quite sure...
