If this is a metro? Shouldn't it be moved to "Subways and Urban Transport" thread?

Seeing the Doha metro idea develop I can't help but think of the issues Dubai has had with it's metro with the "last mile". It's all well and good having a shiny new metro system, but if you can't easily get too and from the station from your home/hotel/office/shops. Investing in bus infrastructure is very unglamorous, but without a decent bus network in place, the metro is just going to be a bit of a gimmick or novelty ride (*cough* Seattle monorail *cough*)

There is already a bus system running in Qatar, in fact there are even double-decker buses in certain areas, and they keep bringing more and more buses, now shelters are being placed everywhere and Air-conditioned bus shelters are to follow...

Qatar long distance rail network design contract awarded
28 Feb 2014

Impression of Qatar Rail train

QATAR: A joint venture of Parsons and Systra has been awarded a design consultancy services contract for the Qatar Long Distance Railway Network.

The planned 400 km rail network would have seven passenger stations, six freight facilities and a depot. It would provide freight and passenger services within Qatar, and links to Saudi Arabia and Bahrain as part of the future Gulf Co-operation Council rail network.

'This design consultancy project is of strategic importance to the state of Qatar in meeting its national vision, and we look forward to working with Qatar Railways Co to begin work on the project early this year,' said Parsons MEA President Guy Mehula on February 27.

QATAR: National railway project promoter Qatar Rail launched a new prequalification process for the civil works on the first phase of the planned Long Distance Passenger & Freight Rail network on February 18.

A prequalification exercise for a combined civils and railway systems contract was launched last year, but subsequently terminated. The new process will see the civil works and railway systems contracts awarded separately.

The Phase 1 civils contract covers the design, construction, integration, testing, commissioning and defect liability for earthworks, bridges, culverts and camel crossings, 133 km of slab track (with the Doha West International option potentially adding a further 23 km), freight yards and station architecture

August 28, 2015

Advancing on plans to build a long-distance passenger and freight network to connect cities within Qatar and across the Gulf, Qatar Rail has floated a tender for a company to oversee the project.

This week, the company invited bids from firms to oversee and manage the first phase of the project, as well as provide design and construction services management.
