ZOLLVEREIN Coal Mine...rusty world heritage site

The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex is a large former industrial site in the city of Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It has been inscribed into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since December 14, 2001 and is one of the anchor points of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

The first coal mine on the premises was founded in 1847, mining activities took place from 1851 until December 23, 1986. For decades starting in the late 1950s, the two parts of the site, Zollverein Coal Mine and Zollverein Coking Plant (erected 1957−1961, closed on June 30, 1993), ranked among the largest of their kinds in Europe. Shaft 12, built in Bauhaus style, was opened in 1932 and is considered an architectural and technical masterpiece and earned reputation as the “most beautiful coal mine in the world”

Gewohnt fantastisch!

I've been twice to the Zeche and think it's just magnificent. Usually I'm not in awe with rusty steel, iron and cracked bricks. But those old coal mines are really something (everywhere in Germany btw, esp. around the Ruhr area and in Saxony)! Oh and let's not forget about alle the impressive open-pit mining sites!

But you won't tell me this was your 1st time in the Zeche, now will you?

Believe it or not this was the first time that I've visited Zollverein. But I plan to go there again to see more of the interior. It really is an amazing place and we can only thank the Gods that it wasn't torn down in the early 90s. Nothing represents the Ruhrgebiet better than a true Zeche.

Geile Bilder!

I think, you'd love the Völklinger Hütte (Saarland), which is UNESCO world heritage too.

Looks pretty interesting. Maybe I'll check it out soon. There are some great industrial sites here in Germany.

Really nice pictures!

Zollverein and Landschaftspark Duisburg are the most impressive industrial monuments i've ever seen.

I only miss some images of the Kocherei, haven't you been in that area? That's also very picturesque.

You mean the Kokerei? A couple of pics are from that area:

I'll see if I can find some more.

A lot of work is still going on around the area. Although it shouldn't be squeaky clean IMO, it is an industrial site after all.

Not these pics but some shots of castles. I guess they like German palaces and castles over there...
