Abstract Brasilia - A unique city

Brasilia is known worldwide by its bold and abstract architecture, with most buildings designed by the legendary Oscar Niemeyer. In this thread, a small sample of this architectonical beauty will be shown. These images were chosen from my gallery at Trekearth, but can also be found at my portfolio, Viana Photography.

Continuing the post, some more photos of mine. Although not so abstract as those of the first set, these are among my best images of Brasília.

I find brasilia to be a city that is devoid of any humanity

but you made a good thread, the city itself is just ugly and in a very old style that is no longer modern or attractive

Thanks for your comments about the thread, but what do you mean with "devoid of humanity"? We are 2,5 million people here (a lot of human beings...). Maybe you are talking about the monumental scale of a projected city, full of monuments, open spaces, large avenues and places evoking civism and contemplation, but, for these standards, Washington is also devoid of humanity. Brasília is modern, has a nice quality of life (for Brazilian standards), is cosmopolitan, lively, multicultural and open-armed.

About being ugly and old-fashioned, that's a matter of taste and I cannot put this into discussion. Prague, Paris, Toledo, Macchu Picchu, Angkor Wat, Cartagena, they are all old-fashioned, each place in its own way, and I can't see why they should be regarded "ugly". Maybe for European eyes a modernist city looks unusual, instead of neoclassical, art-déco or medieval gothic, but to me Brasília is the New World incarnated. Being a projected city and regarded World Heritage by UNESCO, Brasília is pure modernism frozen in time, as the historical site of Salvador de Bahia, the Acropolis of Athens, the District of La Boca in Buenos Aires and the Egyptian ruins at Luxor are also architecture frozen in time and preserved for the forthcoming generations to live and visit.

^It is a really nice photo thread. But Whilst I have no doubt that a city of 2.5 million people has life and is not devoid of humanity, I have seen a so many threads with photographs of the same few buildings, but not one single photograph depicted the life within the city, the downtown streets, etc etc.

I thought the same things about Washington DC until I went there and realised there was more than just the various monuments and the white house. There was a whole big interesting city.

Whilst this is one of the best threads depicing these buildings in Brasilia I have seen, I would love to see some photos of the actual "real" city so to speak. As you point out it is a city of 2.5 million so I figure there must be a lot more than just this.

I understand, Xander. But, in my case, this is probably due to a deficiency of mine: I'm a landscape, cityscape and architecture photographer, I'm terrible with people, too shy and clumsy to ask permission. But only for you to see that THERE IS HUMANITY HERE (), here we go, two pics of people practicing jogging on a cloudy sunday morning (the best I could do so far... )
