Smile

From this angle, the sheer size of the terminal is evident.

The structure in front of it seems to be the pier for the first aerobridge.

The foundations for erecting the Phase II extension of the Terminal towards Chackai are visible in the foreground.

Nice Nice! So, is that like 90 days for the entire thing, I mean the interiors too?

And, did you have to jump walls to click them pics?

- Possibly closer to March 2009 for commissioning. Lol, took the pic from a nearby bridge, fence-hopping is hazardous to the health!

Are there any renders with both the first and second phases?
Also, with the second phase done, will the domestic terminal also move to the new building?

Construction should be completed by end of 2008

In order to commission it in March 2009 , the construction should be completed by Dec 2008, right experts ?

Guys, as on Aug 31, the terminal was 1 day ahead of schedule. The Airport Director has mentioned that Phase I structure will be completed by the year end and the terminal will be open for operations by March...So I dont see any hiccups on way unless our attimari buddies halt the marble load for the interior works..

Phase II will be commissioned by 2009 end, am I right Ajay? And I think Phase I and II will be exclusively for International operations, the domestic operations will continue in the Shanghumugham side terminal.

Oh Ajay, thanks for those exclusive shots. I learn something new everytime from those pictures...

Splendid Ajay! Finally a shot from atop the good old Chakka Arch bridge! Till now we were constrained by that one popular spot in the little road parallel to the Amayezhanchan canal. Because of the angle, I felt the old pictures made the new building look a bit underwhelming. I was going over the arch bridge by car during my return trip, when I saw this view that Ajay has posted and felt a "doh!!" moment. And to make me feel worse, they even had that massive gate to let in construction trucks next to the bridge open!! So I got this really good ground level view from the Chakka side of the terminal. All while I was going at 70kmph

This is supposed to be purely an International terminal, but when the snazzy new building wows our state-level politicians, we will see a lot of pressure to have local flights too from the new facility. Something about arriving in style with displays of power, pelf, prestige etc from New Delhi...

That smaller tubular structure to the apron side, the place where the aerobridges meet the terminal building looks about to be complete. And work has started on the reflective roof structure trusses and arrival/departure porch. I hope they have that cool split aerobridge for separate arrival/departure, like they have in modern airports around the world. Atleast the plan rendering showed that one.

Thumbs up 61% of Terminal work complete

Quote:
Next phase of terminal work awarded

S. Anil Radhakrishnan

Project estimated to cost Rs.80 crore

Chennai-based firm to undertake work

61% of work on first phase completed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Rs.80-crore second phase work for the Rs.245.58-crore world-class international terminal complex of the Thiruvananthapuram international airport has been awarded.

The second phase work involves lateral expansion of the terminal building by 50 metres on both sides. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has awarded the work to the Chennai-based Consolidated Construction Consortium that had been entrusted with the ongoing Rs.165-crore first phase work of the terminal complex.

“The piling work for the extension of the building was taken up along with the work in the first phase. The plan is ready and the work will begin by the last week of this month,” a senior official of the AAI told The Hindu.

Meanwhile, work on the first phase that includes the Rs.115-crore terminal building, apron and car park is progressing as per schedule. “Sixty-one per cent of the work has been completed and the work is progressing on schedule,” the AAI official said.

Parking bays

The four parking bays, constructed at a cost of Rs.14.5 crore, had already been integrated with the existing 3,398-metre-long runway of the airport. With this, the aircraft can now reach the new terminal building being constructed on the Chakka side.

The structure of the three-storied terminal building, with a floor area of 23,299 sq. metres, designed using modern design concepts, has already come up. Work of the mezzanine floor of the building is in full swing now. Later, the terminal building will be covered with heat reflecting toughened glass.

The ground floor of the building will have a floor area of 11,520 sq. metres; mezzanine floor (5,354 sq. metres) and the first floor 6,425 sq. metres. Work on the approach road to the terminal building from near Bharat Tyres on the Chaka-Eenchakkal stretch of NH 47 bypass is also in full swing. Being constructed by KITCO for the State, the approach road will have 170 metres length and 30 metres width to facilitate six-lane traffic to the complex. A bridge will be constructed across the Parvathy Puthanar to connect the road. The parking lot, to be set up in front of the terminal, can accommodate 575 cars.

Great to see that the work is progressing bang on time!

Hello All,

Great to see pictures of all the developments goin' on at TIA!

Good that AAI have also gone ahead to take up both the Phases [1 & 2} together,
Not sounding ( -ve), but also read in the above source that AAI are still waiting for the rest of the land needed for the second phase [@36 hec].
Hope this too would be prioritised an given and not follow the fate of the CRIP fiasco.
Once again congrats to all those at Tvm who graciously give updates with the latest pictures,

Cheers,,,,,,,,,,,

Once the new TIA is operational, can we expect landing facility for Jumbo Jets (Boeing 777's etc). I have been depending on Silk airlines to connect from Singapore to TRV and that service is very uncomfortable. Once I asked a SIA manager about why no direct service to TRV and he said it is only because of the lack of landing facility for 777 at TRV. And they will be happy to shift some of their Chennai and bangalore services to TRV once the TIA has adequate facilities.

- Boeing 777s have already been operated to Trivandrum by Emirates and Air India operates 747s during the peak season, especially in the Haj time. So I find the SIA manager's comments strange.

B747 AT TVM

Air India operates regular B747 services to Riyadh from TIA twice weekly. one via Kochi and other via Calicut. The return service is non stop twice weekly from Riyadh. Go through Air India 's web site.

I find it strange and unreasonable too as even B747s and A340s service to TIA. And if they cant use the 777, why dont they just service with A330 or even B737, which has the range for a <5 hour Singapore- Trivandrum sector. Did you ask him that?

And moreover the terminal facilities are adequate for Emirates, Qatar Airways and other Int'l airlines, then whats this big deal with Singapore Airlines? Also B777s are no special aircrafts and can land and takeoff at any runway catering to other wide bodied aircrafts.

My understanding is that by and large SILK operates from Singapore on non-metro routes. Their fleet is also tuned to operations to smaller cities. Metro route operations are mostly done by Singapore Airlines itself. They have a large fleet of the bigger aircrafts like B777 and B 747. Since flights to TIA are operated by Silk, the aircrafts used are also of samller size simialr to A 320.

Getting SIA to operate to TRV will be a key development for us since many airlines will follow them .. and so we should try to convince them about the potential of TRV. I am sure there is no shortage of passengers for 777 flights for at least twice in a week given that Silk's TRV service is one of their busiest.

- The hub will also synergise with the Vizhinjam Transshipment Terminal for multi-modal transport of cargo. The Seaport and Airport are just about 15 Kms apart, the closest of any city in India.
