Nice pics. I was in Marseille recently, but I can't recognize many of these parts. These quarters look a lot better than the quarters in the city center, near the port where most buildings are rundown.

Marseille is kind of brutal IMO. I'm not saying I don't like it, it just seems like a tough city to get by in. Very working class.

Yes Marseille is a working class city, it is a like Naples but in cleaner and a way more multicultural.

The city is vibrant and cool.

The French equivalent to Barcelona. Marseilles gets a bad rap but I have a crush on the city. Barcelona, Marseilles and Naples have a similar appealing grit to them.

Working class cities are my favorite type. That is why Marseilles appeal to me so much. I am bored by upwardly mobile, yuppie scum, overly gentrified metropli. I preferred Boston when it was still a little dicey and when there was a "Combat Zone". Marseilles is ripe.

I quite agree, i think that each city has their type. i would never imagine Marseille as a upper middle class city.

Great photos! I've never been to Marseilles, but I suspect when we finally meet, it'll be love at first sight. Does Marseilles have a very unique culture compared to the more northern French cities?

I visited this city some 7 years ago and I was surprised by it's kindness and timeless beauty and cosmopolitan character. I hope to revisit this harbour citytime for a loner stay sometimes. Thanks for sharing!

Well that's what they have been trying to do for years with the Euroméditéranée project, transforming Marseille in a palm tree riviera city.

Marseille has a very special character thanks to its port, Mediterranean sky and beaches, and its hilly terrain. I also like the wide Avenue du Prado, the Place Castellane and the Canabière. But Marseille has so many ill-kept apartment buildings and houses and apparently a high crime rate. It's like the New Orleans or Napoli of France. You have to love its unique character but its a problem child. Also, Marseille seems to show a wider gap between rich and poor New World-style. You have beautiful houses and even mansions and villas with swimming pools and in other neighborhoods you have very poor and ill-kept housing.

The difference isn't so much that Marseilles is poorer and has more inequalities. The difference is that Marseille's center is yet to be completely gentrified like in other cities.

When poverty lies in some unknown suburbs that no tourist sees or go to in other cities of the country it appears more invisible than in Marseilles where it is right in the center of the city.

That said, as I mentioned in my previous post, the local politicians are trying with all their strength to gentrify the city and kick the poor out, where you wont see them.

Well Marseille 3th arrondissement is the second poorest municipality in France. I don't know for the 1st arrondissement.
