Weird, exotic and wonderful places on Earth picture thread
I was inspired to make this thread, after seeing this in the 'thought provoking pictures thread' - the island of Socotra - off the coast of Yemen and Somalia. The island is home to wierd geographical features, wierd flora and fauna, and has its own unique Semitic language. Mentioned in early Greek navigational texts, the name appears to be derived from the Sanskrit language of India. In early times, the island was inhabited by Nestorian Christians, but is apparently now Islamic, with its people being made up of Somali, Yemeni and Indian ancestry.

Cool thread.Heres my contribution :
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are a collection of bleak and remote islands in the South Atlantic Ocean. Most of the islands, rising steeply from the sea, are rugged and mountainous. At higher elevations the islands are permanently covered with ice and snow. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Nice one. Culturally speaking, Polynesia is one of the areas of the world I know least about.

Funny enough, when I was a kid I used to be like that, as I suffered migraines in the summer, so would probably not have gone there even if I had the chance, but as I get older I find I'm more nesh, so some balmy warm island would suit me now!

Heres another interesting place :
Bannack.Montana.USA. Bannack is a ghost town in Beaverhead County, Montana, United States. Located on the Beaverhead River, approximately 14 miles (23 km) upstream from where the Beaverhead joins with the Red Rock River south of Dillon. Founded in 1862 and named after the local Bannock Indians, it was the site of Montana's first major gold discovery in 1862, and served as the capital of Montana Territory briefly in 1864, until the capital was moved to Virginia City. Bannack continued as a mining town, though with a dwindling population. The last residents left in the 1970s. At its peak, Bannack had a population of about three thousand. There were three hotels, three bakeries, three blacksmith shops, two stables, two meat markets, a grocery store, a restaurant, a brewery, a billiard hall, and four saloons. Though all of the businesses were built of logs, some had decorative false fronts. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Death Valley, the hottest place on Earth. Temperatures can reach 58°C in the shade.

Ladakh is a remote, predominantly Vajrayana Buddhist region of India, also home to a minority of Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs, located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is closely culturally linked with Tibet, and is characterised by mountains, valleys, sparse landscape, and icy lakes.
