Chicago - Chinatown

We took a quick trip with the older 2 kids to Chicago's Chinatown, this is the main tourist drag.

Big Changes in the area - old warehouse district.

Fist a very cheap brunch at a Chinese bakery ( Eldo )
A new one for me, Chinese Churro, piping hot. Girls decided Moon Pies were not for them, but the meat filled buns were a big hit.

Some of the mystique has worn off now that both Chinese and American kids are firmly under the cultural dominance of the Japanese, my girls could name almost all the characters on all the kitsch.

NOT Walmart

Peacock with an attitude

White Lotus

The oldest finds a store where she can't read any of the signs, this must be good. Inside was an interesting seafood/butcher shop with live lobsters, crabs, fish, and frogs. Along with dried fish, squid, and octopi. $2 for 10 pair imitation ivory chopsticks. Too dark and crowded for photos.

These balconies must have been great before the sign was pasted on.

The gate to Chinatown - from the inside.

Viva la difference.

A common sign was "Very nice to look and hold, if you break it it is sold"

Trump Tower

Tidy side street

must come back at night

The newer section - strip mall in base of parking garage.

A newer building.

Some of the nicer stuff

Ferocious columns

The way beams are done.

Fresh Frozen Shrimp

Tidy alley - not the ChinaTown I read about back in the 70s.

Chinatown is a living community, the owners and tenants value function today over yesterdays history.

Crimes against terracotta.

Wooden second story on old brick building, with facade redone to hide it.

Vierling ___ Well & CO. Iorn Works, Chicago

Another iron storefront.

Somebody convinced this store owner that a big blue canopy with his name and number would be better for business than that old facade. The rock tile on the right ....

This store has kept up, and worked around their terracotta.

Awesome Harry! Ever since I moved to the south loop two years ago I haven't been there, which makes no sense at all. Thanks for the sweet pics.

Thanks harryc.

One interesting site is St. Therese Chinese Catholic church. The church dates back to the days when all this was an Italian neighborhood. I met the resident pastor a few years back and he had some interesting stories about the history of the area.

Nice. Do you happen to have any photos of the community center by Studio Gang?
