One Better Generalization is New Developments are Happening all the way from Aroor to Near Thrissur along NH47,is What I feel.

Kochi awaits metro rail

KOCHI: The elevated light metro-rail proposed for the city linking Aluva with Pettah (a distance of 25 km) through the MG Road would bring in revolutionary changes in ensuring fast, comfortable, affordable, non-polluting and accident-free travel through the city hub.

An extension up to the Cochin International Airport has already been mooted and there is public demand to extend it from the Madhava Pharmacy Junction up to Menaka. This would help lakhs of Goshree islanders, boat passengers, people who visit the High Court and parks on the city's western end and also the Marine Drive. The four-laning of SA Road, development of the Thammanam-Pullepady-Chakkaraparambu road, the NH bypass-Vennala-Seaport Airport Road, the Chilavanoor Bund road linking Thykoodam with MG Road, the Goshree-Mamangalam Road, the Goshree-Kalamassery road, the extension of the Seaport-Airport Road from HMT Junction to the airport and the development of roads lying parallel to existing arterial roads would considerably reduce traffic congestion.

Flyovers have to be developed alongside on the Edapally-Aroor bypass, at Edapally, Palarivattom, Vytilla (where two flyovers have been mooted) and at Kundanoor.

The opening of new shopping malls along the bypass and the proposed bus terminal-cum-mobility hub at Vytilla will even necessitate an elevated flyover along the bypass. Long-pending road overbridges at Edapally, Atlantis, Ponnurunni and Eroor level crossings, apart from the bridge parallel to the iron bridge at Thripunithura too would have to be completed to decongest the city.

Flyovers are also required at Kaloor, while the North and South overbridges have to be widened.

Nod for Metro Rail by February 2011

Source
Quote:
Kochi Metro project is expected to get the nod by February 2011, and the project would be completed in three years, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Managing Director E Sreedharan said here on Saturday.

The project has surmounted all hurdles and is waiting clearance from the Union Cabinet, he said while talking to reporters at Cusat here.
It has been decided that the project will not be taken up under public-private-participation (PPP), he said.

The cost of the project is Rs 3,500 crore. The Centre and the state will share 16 percent each, while the remaining amount will be sourced from overseas or from within the country, he said. The Union Finance Ministry is exploring ways to raise the amount, he said.

There will be 25 stations in the 28-km-long metro project which will be a prototype of the Jaipur Metro.

The state government has sanctioned Rs159 crore to take up initial works, he said. The District Collector has been asked to proceed with land acquisition.
The survey details have been given to the district administration. All the illegal constructions will be removed, he said. The work will be completed in a time-bound manner, he said.

Why no green signal to Kochi Metro, asks minister
Indo-Asian News Service, Updated: December 23, 2010 15:04 IST

Quote:
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Minister for Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar on Thursday said that it remains a mystery why the central government is not giving the nod for the Kochi Metro project.

"We are all quite surprised because when it comes to Kochi Metro the central government has not yet given the sanction while similar projects in Chennai, Bangalore and West Bengal have been given the green signal," the minister informed the Kerala assembly.

The minister's statement comes after the proposed Rs.3,048 crore Kochi Metro Rail project was cleared by the Kerala government in March and it asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to commence the preliminary work.

The preliminary work includes widening roads and construction of necessary overbridges.

The project is a joint venture of the state and the central government. Sanctions from the Planning Commission and the urban development ministry have come but the nod from the finance ministry is what is holding the project back.

In spite of metro, I think light rail should be appropriate for Kochi. Kochi's population is not too much high.

Thumbs down No Takers for the Preliminary Works

  • No takers for the new bridge parallel to the "North" ROB as part of preliminary works.
  • This situation ie; no companies came up for even the preliminary works made surprise to the DMRC itself.
  • Now the work is re-tendered and the last date is February 2nd.

It would be better if the news writers get a clue about the project before writing the copy. Is the re-tender for the re-building of the NORTH bridge? Or for building the fourth bridge, ie the proposed one near KSRTC station?

Also, Ajith, please provide the source.

Not only Manorama. NO OTHER source gave this news. That casts doubt on the credibility of this source.

Why I think this news is wrong:

1. Actually, I would expect Manorama to make big noise if it had actually happened.
2. IIRC, projects here are readily taken up by the contractors. I haven't seen any reluctance in any project.

Ernakulam North ROB: A bridge to the future

Quote:
KOCHI: If things go as planned, the traffic congestion on the Ernakulam North Railway Overbridge (ROB) would soon be a thing of the past.

The tender procedures for the renovation work of the North overbridge began on Tuesday. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which is the implementing agency of the project, has invited tenders for the reconstruction of the ROB. The cost of the project is estimated at Rs 48.80 crore, and the work is expected to be completed in 18 months. As per the plan, the existing bridge will be renovated into a four-lane ROB.

Traffic would be diverted through the ROB at Pullepady during the renovation work of the North overbridge. Initially, two single-lanes will be constructed at North and will be opened for vehicular traffic from both directions. Then the existing bridge will be reconstructed.

It was in June last year that the state government initiated the work of five major metro-related projects. The state also appointed DMRC as the implementing agency of the project, the estimated cost of which is Rs158 crore. The five projects include the renovation of North overbridge, construction of a new ROB connecting Mullassery Canal Road and Salim Rajan Road and the widening of the road from Jos Junction to Ernakulam Junction Railway Station. The other two projects are for the renovation of MG Road and widening of Banerjee Road.

Meanwhile, tender has been floated for the construction of the ROB at the southern end of the KSRTC bus station connecting Mullassery Canal Road and Salim Rajan Road. The total cost for the construction of the two-lane ROB is Rs 37.5 crore.

Among other projects, the Rs 38-crore project for road widening from Jos Junction to Ernakulam Junction Railway Station mainly aims to convert the existing two-lane road into a four-lane road. Meanwhile, the Rs 12.5-crore project for MG Road aims to renovate the road and modernise footpaths as road widening is not practical.
