Id say Paris is the most consistently beautiful, if you like the style then you like paris however i find it a bit too samey though its what makes they city so beautiful in the first place (so a contradiction). Comparing it to other cities like London is silly because london was never as planned but still has some stunning areas as good as Paris.

Paris and the rest of all these European cities are so played-out. Let's explore the wonderful African cities of Cairo, Casablanca and Algiers, huh? Maybe a little India? I say Asian and African architecture beats Europe's any day of the week.

We don't compare Paris and London here , just you who feels the need to mention it , Paris is just a beautiful City with all that magnificent classical buildings remained... lots of them !

Paris is one of the most beautiful cities ever.. but isn't the tittle of the thread a little bit overreacted? Not because the city, just because every person have a different taste.

In order to call a city “beautiful”, there are some prerequisites IMO:
1 Beautiful historic center
2 Beautiful suburbs
3 Beautiful outskirts
4 Interplay between water (sea, lake or river) and mountain.
Paris only fulfills point 1.

1. ALL OF THE CITY OF PARIS?
2. Paris has MANY beautiful suburbs.
3. French countryside? Small villages such a Troyes? Provins?
4. Sein, canal st. martin? Montmartre (perhaps a HILL, but still!) ?

Paris fulfills all four, in my opinion!

Which cities have all of those prerequisites? As far as Europe goes, I find Paris suburbs the least unattractive. Many European major cities have suburbs that make those of Paris look beautiful. Think of all major Southern European cities. Think of major Eastern European cities also. Don't they all have worse suburbs, generally speaking? Plus, Paris has many beautiful and green suburbs in the west side. Most Paris suburbs shown here are those in the North and East. Those are generally speaking the least attractive because of their low-income demographics. Athens, Barcelona, Marseille, Napoli, and Valencia all have water but what do you think of their suburbs and even many of their ill-kept city neighborhoods. Maybe that only leaves northern cities like Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Hamburg? So maybe it's a North American city that fullfills all those criteria, like San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, or Vancouver? They have mountainous terrain.

Paris is the most beautiful large city in the world by far - whoever mentioned African archtecture must be mad, and Asian architecture?

Vancouver? Don't make me laugh... the surroundings don't make the city beautiful if the actual city is mundane in its streets, architecture, etc..

It is ridiculous to compare tiny cities like Venice or Prague to Paris anyway, so dont' bother. Paris is the #1 large metropolis in terms of man-made beauty.

NY can't compare in visual beauty neither can London, even though it has beautiful areas.

From what I've seen of BA in photos, it isn't as prestine or beautiful as Paris at all. It has countless modern structures everwhere.

Skylines don't make a city, show the streets if you wish to see how a city really is.

Why do you think B. Aires is a prettier version of Paris?

Rome doesn't match Paris - its a rat warren.

ridiculous -- so your saying all modern cities which do not have a historic center are ugly?

Paris would be more beautiful if it had more colour. This would solidify it's claim as world's most beautiful city.

Paris is lacking in this element.

Stay out of the stereotypes, the immense majority of Paris suburbs are really nice, don't forget that Paris Region has one of the highest GDP per capita in the European Union. There are just some parts, very small by the way, of blocks built in the 60's and 70's where some african immigrants live, but come on, every big city has some areas not so beautiful, and if you compare Paris ones with some parts of cities like New York, Moscow, Shanghai, and even London, it's much better.

And wait......beautiful outskirts??? Probably Paris has the most beautiful outskirts of any major world city, just those charming french little towns, and chateaux.....just perfect!

I think Seine River is more than enough as for a beautiful body of water, it'sprobably one of the most famous rivers in the world, and it's so romantic!

So I think Paris has all of your four parametres of a beautiful city....
