Yes likely, but sometimes that's what some Camberwell citizens believe:

Normal WASPs don't live in shitboxes, those modern monstrosities are for drug taking students and foreign rapists/terrorists.
We don't want any of those types of people here!

Conservative reactionaries, racists and misinformed people often react this way.

If it makes you all feel better Seattle is infected with the same damn NIMBY problem. Listen to this radio ad for our light rail proposition and you'll understand. (click the "this radio ad link).

yeah shame that they dont have imposing buildings or monuments like washington...

as for nimbys

there is a local residents group in my area opposing the construction of a new school to replace 2 old ones and the excess land be sold to housing...

the streetscapes have trees that are dead and the neighborhood is a dump... why doesnt the lobby group call for things like this instead of stupid opposition of a NEW school....

There is a situation too in Bankstown with public school land slated to be sold to a private Islamic school. The locals are in an uproar over it.

I'd say the media play a fairly large hand in the deal.

It tends to have a large Arab population but it also has a high concentration of Asians as well.

The concentration of ethnic populations is not as high as it was when inner city suburbs were popular with migrants such as Marrickville and Leichhardt had higher populations.

The group is called "Bass Hill's Future"

The top banner says it all - classic NIMBY pose.

The local Council refused it at the end of last year, I believe, and the applicant has lodged both a review of determination with the Council and also appealed with the Land Environment Court.

Apparently the main issue is the sale of the land, which was surplus land of Bass Hill High School - there was a clause in the contract that stated that it could not be used as a school, with the intention of re-developing it into houses, however, the developer sold it to a group who intended to build an Islamic school.

The usual reasons are being thrown forward - traffic, the whole "Save Our Suburb" mantra, etc... a lot of people are saying that their objection is not based on being an Islamic school - but some people are showing their "true colours" by quoting verses from the Koran, attempting to put forward how incompatible their religion is in Australia.

The drive in theatre across the road has recently closed, which will obviously be re-developed too. This group is more than likely going to have kittens with that and will probably object any development of this land too.

Groups rally against planning laws

NSW environmental and community groups have called for change to the state's planning laws which they say allow uncontrolled development.

In a rally at Sydney's Hyde Park today hundreds of people called for the protection against development of sites from the Hunter region to the north coast.

They carried banners with slogans including, "Only a nong would approve Currawong", "High rise lies", and "State gov: Pirates of Pittwater".

The protesters want to scrap Part 3A of the state's planning legislation, which gives the planning minister power to take over significant developments.

Opposition planning spokesman Brad Hazzard told the crowd a Liberal government would abolish the legislation.

"From Morrisset to Mudgee from Currawong to Catherine Hill Bay, this government is going to hear a very loud message and that is, we have had it with your planning laws.

"The state Liberal and National parties are absolutely over this rotten dollars for deals approach to planning," he said.

Environment advocate Liz Claridge from Broke, in the Hunter Valley, said the rally was important to send a clear message to the state government.

"They've got to gain the trust of the people ... there is no trust, you can see here."

Organisers read a message of support from Sydney's lord mayor Clover Moore.

"People are here today because they are angry about inappropriate development in their neighbourhoods," Ms Moore's message read.

"Billion dollar developments should not be approved behind closed doors without public accountability and contestability."

Environment advocate and former ABC television gardening host Peter Cundall also sent a message supporting the rally.

"I fully support your combined fight against uncontrolled greed-driven destruction and the political corruption that always goes with it. If you don't fight back, you lose."

Comment was being sought from Planning Minister Kristina Keneally.

Just discovered this thread. Internationally recognised carpark markets in the burbs. Classic!

The St George's Terrace ridgeline is a great one for Perth. Basically, because the only scrapers of notable height have been built on St George's Terrace, that we should "protect the ridgeline" by only ever building new scrapers on St George's Terrace lol.

You cannot blame Clover Moore for the city's current state of stagnant development.

Sydney City Council actually want more development in the Sydney CBD, particularly commercial development.

It's the State Government's fault. No one has reason to base themselves here, high taxes and high property prices.

Again, blame the folks in Macquarie St.

Clover should be praised for bringing more planning experts to Sydney particularly Jan Gehl. His ideas for improving city streets is sound. Cars have had too much control of our streets.

She has realistic ideas such as the small bars, lively laneways and light rail.
