Airport passenger traffic continues to grow nationwide
Posted on July 25, 2012, Wednesday
http://www.theborneopost.com/2012/07...ow-nationwide/

PUTRAJAYA: Passenger traffic recorded at airports nationwide in the first six months of the year, grew by four per cent to 33,183,608 passengers, as compared to 31,909,775 passengers in the same period last year.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said, of the passengers recorded from January to June, 17,349,176 were domestic passengers compared with 16,820,281 for the same period last year.

“There was also a 3.14 per cent increase for international passengers which increased to 15,834,432, as compared to 15,089,494 in same period in 2011,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

He said the increase was due to higher demand for air travel, increase in flight frequencies and the resumption of operations by local and foreign aviation companies.

Therefore, noted Kong, the construction of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) 2 which was still in progress, would help ease passenger flow as the new airport could accommodate another 4.5 million passengers.

“The government is also upgrading several city airports such as in Penang, Ipoh and Sibu,” he said. — Bernama

Routes Asia heads to Sarawak in 2014
(WCARN.com, July 24)

Quote:
It was announced today that in 2014 Routes Asia will return to Malaysia when the event takes place in Kuching, the capital of the Malaysian state of Sarawak, jointly hosted by Sarawak Tourism Board and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad.

This will be the fifth time that a Routes event has taken place in Malaysia. In 2003 the first Routes Asia event, also the first ever Routes regional event, was held in Sepang hosted by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad who went on to host Routes Asia for the following two years and World Routes 2008 in Kuala Lumpur. Since these early days Routes Asia has gone from strength to strength welcoming 672 delegates in Chengdu earlier this year.

Sarawak, known as the Land of the Hornbills, is the largest of the Malaysian states and is situated on the island of Borneo. Home to the world's oldest tropical rainforests it is abundant in wildlife including rare and endangered species such as the orangutan and the hornbill. The historic capital city of Kuching has a population of around 600,000 and dates back hundreds of years when traders from China and the West would travel there to trade the exotic treasures of the rainforest. Today Kuching remains the central hub and gateway to Sarawak.

Najib: Upgraded Sibu airport a promise fulfilled
by Jane Moh,[email protected] Posted on September 17, 2012, Monday
http://www.theborneopost.com/2012/09...ise-fulfilled/

SIBU: Noting a multitude of developments taking place in the state, especially in Sibu, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak described the expansion and upgrading of Sibu airport at a cost of RM136.9 million as both timely and a special Malaysia Day gift to the people of Sarawak.

Its completion within schedule and budget chronicled yet another BN government’s promise being fulfilled, he said.

Opening the upgraded Sibu airport yesterday, the prime minister said the government always ensured that every developing city and town had sufficient and relevant facilities to support its growth.

This, he said, was vital to ensure continuous, greater, and sustainable economic development.

“We see Sibu, for example, as the gateway to the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) and it (Sibu) is on the verge of recovery and embracing a better future.”

All these, he continued, showed the eagerness of the federal government to see greater development in the state.

Najib pointed out that the state recorded 3.8 million tourist arrivals last year, which was an increase of 16 per cent from the previous year.

Out of this, 62 per cent were foreign tourists and the rest domestic travellers.

“These tourists brought an inflow of RM7.2 billion to the state, which is 13.5 per cent of the state Gross Domestic Product.”

Najib said ever since Merdeka in 1957 and the formation of Malaysia in 1963, the government had never stopped developing facilities and infrastructure which the nation needed to push forward.

He also stressed that the good relationship and close cooperation between the state and federal governments was important for development.

“The federal government never rejects any requests from the state government.”

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who was also present, said the expansion project was a reflection of the federal government’s appreciation of the sensitivities and aspirations of the people in the central region of the state, and also to upgrade their socio-economic status.

RM70 mil allocation to upgrade Sandakan airport
Last updated on 12 January 2013 - 02:34pm

SANDAKAN (Jan 12, 2013): The Federal government has allocated RM70 million to upgrade the Sandakan Airport, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.

He said the project involved the expansion of the terminal building to give comfort to the passengers using the airport.

He said the scope of the project included expanding the terminal size to 3,000 square metres, upgrading the departure and arrival halls, immigration check-point, baggage scanning area, mechanical and electrical system, full air-conditioning the terminal and increasing the parking area.

"It will start as soon as possible this year. The project will be ready in 18 months," he said after making a working visit to the airport, here, today.

Kong said the project is necessary as the airport handled 820,000 passengers last year, or an increase of 5.8 per cent from 2011 and was set to further grow in future. – Bernama

I've found this as great news... Turkish Airlines to Resume Malaysia Service after ten-plus years' suspension. Starting 25 April 2013, Turkish Airlines will operate Istanbul - Kuala Lumpur nonstop with an A340-300 thrice weekly, and it will increase to four weekly starting 18 June 2013. Schedule:

TK060 IST0115 – 1650KUL 343 x257
TK061 KUL2315 – 0535+1IST 343 x257

From 25 April to 17 June, the above flight will operate Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

@nazrey I just noticed the renovated Sibu Airport today, and from your pics, it looks really airy and modern (heck yeah, brand new seating too!), with a better (and proper) duty-free shop, wide walkways, high ceilings, and oh yeah, more gates for Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia. Hopefully, with this massive improvements, Sibu can bring in other carriers to operate to and from the airport so that it bring in much more revenue to the local and regional economy, as well as expand its connections within ASEAN, if not Asia. Well done!
