Kota Baru airport to be AirAsia's next hub

INDOCHINA REGION: Fernandes says plan will most likely be realised next year

AIRASIA Bhd, the country's leading low-cost carrier, plans to establish the Kota Baru airport as its hub for the Indochina region, according to group chief operating officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.

Speaking on the sidelines of the second day of the World Capital Markets Symposium, here, yesterday, Fernandes said the company also sees the potential of several other domestic airports becoming regional hubs.

"We also see potential in Senai, Johor, and Kuantan, Pahang. I'd rather let Aireen Omar (AirAsia Bhd chief executive officer ) talk about it as she's the boss," Fernandes said, adding that the plan would most-likely be realised next year.

Fernandes, who earlier conducted a session entitled "Disruptive Innovation: The Future of Business", was asked by a member of the audience whether AirAsia would consider "disrupting the status quo" by using Kota Baru airport for Indochina-bound flights.

"I think it is a brilliant idea but unfortunately, before you take credit for it, we're (already) doing it," Fernandes answered, drawing laughter from the the packed hall of 700.

"From Kota Baru, we are going to start a flight to Medan. We're going to Singapore as well, and Indochina," said Fernandes.

On the 2014 Budget, Fernandes expressed his confidence in the Finance Ministry in managing the country's fiscal deficit effectively.

"Malaysians have to be aware that we need to cut the deficit. There are three ways in addressing the deficit - imposing goods and services tax, cutting spending and increasing productivity."

Fernandes said the budget should support productive industries and entrepreneurs as drivers of the economy, which will then create more jobs and generate tax revenue.

"One very simple thing is to break down monopolies and create fair and well-regulated markets.

"I think the banking industry has done a good job, so as to inject more competition into the market and make companies more productive," he added.

16 airports in Msia have safety certifications
Published: 2013/11/14
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_New...33701/Article/

SEPANG: SIX airports under the management of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) yesterday received the Aerodrome and the Safety Management System (SMS) certifications from the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA).

Malacca and Kota Baru (Kelantan) airports both received Aerodrome and the SMS certifications, while Miri (Sarawak), Tawau (Sabah), Sultan Mahmud (Terengganu) and Sultan Azlan Shah (Perak) airports each received the SMS certification.

These airports make 16 airports in total to obtain the certifications, comprising five international airports and 11 domestics airports under MAHB's management.

The Aerodrome certification is a testimony that these airports have successfully completed the comprehensive audit by DCA based on Annex 14 Convention on International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICSO).

It aims to establish a regulatory system to ensure that the facilities, equipment, services and operational procedures are in compliance with the standard and recommended practices specified in the ICAO Annex 14 document.

The SMS indicates conformance to all safety requirements and achieving continuous improvement in safety performance that include the essential features of safety such as policy, strategy and planning and implementation as well as promotion, record, staff training and competency.

MAHB chief operating officer Datuk Abdul Hamid Mohd Ali said with the certification, MAHB can demonstrate to the world that the airports placed high importance to safety.

"These airports will continue to undergo annual scheduled inspections to ensure that the requirements of the certification are continuously met," he said at the launch of runway safety team (RST) and standards and safety handbook here, followed by the Aerodrome and SMS certification presentation by DCA director-general Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman.

Abdul Hamid said the handbook is the result of cooperation between Airport Standards Division of the DCA and MAHB, which will become the guidelines to those involved in airport development, operations and maintenance projects under the management of MAHB, while RST is one of the initiatives from the ICAO to ensure operation safety and reduction of accidents on runways worldwide.

"Each RST will be represented by a pilot from airline companies, air traffic control officer and airport maintenance staff," he said.

by Ronnie Teo [email protected]. Posted on January 20, 2014, Monday
http://www.theborneopost.com/2014/01...#ixzz2rjKddr84

Yabut is seen talking to reporters of The Borneo Post during a recent
interview here. Yabut says, AirAsia is constantly looking for ways to build the
connectivity to Philippines which includes improving its connectivity with
Malaysia, particularly East Malaysia.

KUCHING: AirAsia Bhd (AirAsia) is looking to establish direct flights between Kuching and Manila in the near future in a bid to increase connectivity between Malaysia and the Philippines.

This follows its Miri-Manila route which has seen a strong take-up rate since it was formed in December last year, reveals Apprentice Asia winner Jonathan Yabut.

Yabut is currently AirAsia’s chief of staff under a one-year contract with Malaysian business mogul Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, a position which was awarded to him for winning the hit reality TV show; The Apprentice Asia.

“The role that Tony (Fernandes) has given me is marketing. I’ve always been into marketing anyway, so I’m trying to leverage on my strengths,” Yabut said in a recent exclusive interview with The Borneo Post.

“A lot of the work which he has given me is to build up the crowd for AirAsia for the Philippines. The Philippines is the youngest member of the AirAsia family; it was only launched in 2012,” he added.

“So, we’re trying to build this network.”

One such way, he said, was to increase its connectivity with Malaysia, particularly East Malaysia.

Currently, AirAsia has routes connecting Kota Kinabalu to Manila as well as to Cebu in the Philippines.

Kuala Lumpur is also connected to Philippines via Manila and Cebu, Yabut said, adding that Kuching will hopefully join the map soon.

“Miri is not only the gateway to Sarawak but also to Brunei,” he explained.
“And us being low cost, there’s more options for travel between Sarawak and the Philippines.

“Logically speaking, it makes sense to build a capital city-to-capital city route. There’s business transactions between both, and cargo as well.

“Not only is Kuching one of the many destinations Filipinos come for tourism, but it also a good market for work for Filipinos.”

However, Yabut opined that Philippines is a very challenging market to penetrate as it is already heavily saturated. He referred to Cebu Air announcing the acquisition of Tiger Airways (Tigerair) Philippines for US$15 million as part of a strategic alliance forged with Singapore’s Tigerair for codeshare and interline arrangements.

This is second case of consolidation in less than a year after AirAsia bought 49 per cent of Zest Airways in March 2013.

“It is a scary thought because mergers and acquisitions are not uncommon. That’s how it usually is,” he explained.

“But we’re fighting hard because we believe it is an underserved market in the Asean region and Tony (Fernandes) has done so much for it.”

Yabut went on to highlight AirAsia’s efforts to connect all of its routes via Fly-Thru, a process of transferring from one flight to another without the hassle of going through immigration processing, and of having to collect baggage when you are taking two different flights to get to your final destination and stopping over at a transit station.

“We want that in all routes – it is only availble for selected routes now. Our dream by 2020, or 2018, is for all 380 destinations of AirAsia to be connected in this aspect.”

KUCHING: The Tourism Ministry hopes that the plan to have direct flights between Kuching and Shenzhen, China will be realised in May this year to boost the tourism industry of both cities.

Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said with the three times a week direct flights, the state can attract more tourists from China, thus strengthening the ties between the two countries.

“China has emerged as one of the economic powerhouses of the world and soon it may overtake the United States of America’s economy, which is currently the number one economic powerhouse in the world.

“They had also contributed a lot to the economic development of Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole. With the direct flights from Kuching to Szhenzhen, and from Shenzhen to Kuching, it would further benefit both cities in both countries in terms of social and economic developments,” he said at the Kuching Hockien Association Chinese New Year dinner held at the Christian Ecumenical Centre here on Tuesday.

AirAsia introduces 4 new routes from Sarawak
22 March 2014| last updated at 05:23PM
http://www.nst.com.my/business/lates...rawak-1.526698

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia has introduced four new routes from Sarawak to Penang, Langkawi, Terengganu and Kota Baru, in a move to reinforce its connectivity between the state and the Peninsular.

Two new routes are from Miri to Terengganu and Penang, and from Kuching to Kota Baru and Langkawi, the airline said in a statement today.

The new Kuching – Kota Baru route is AirAsia's ninth domestic route from the city.

AirAsia is also the sole airline to connect Kuching directly to the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

AirAsia will operate the Kuching – Kota Baharu route three times weekly from today and to Langkawi four times weekly.

AirAsia connects both Sabah and Sarawak to the Peninsular with 399 flights weekly and offers the best connectivity within the two states.-- Bernama

Earthworks for new Mukah airport to start tomorrow
15 April 2014| last updated at 01:58PM
http://www.nst.com.my/business/lates...orrow-1.568261

KUCHING: Initial earthworks for the construction of the new Mukah Airport in Sarawak's central region coastal area will begin tomorrow.

A Sarawak-based company, Hock Peng Furniture and General Contractor Sdn Bhd, was awarded the RM133.3 million contract for the earthworks, which represented the first phase of the airport construction project.

The contract was inked by the company's managing director and chairman Datuk Toh Chiew Hock and Sarawak Public Works Department director Zuraimi Subki in a simple ceremony witnessed by State Infrastructure Development and Communications Minister, Datuk Seri Michael Manyin Jawong here today.

Speaking at a press conference after the ceremony, Manyin said the project marked another milestone for coastal area development in Sarawak.

"The new Mukah Airport will provide a new connectivity along the coastal area which will sustain the economic development spurred by the Score (Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy) activities," he said.

The new airport will be built on a site about seven kilometres from Mukah town centre at an estimated overall cost of RM600 million.

It is expected to be completed by 2018. -- Bernama
