Penang to lure tourist with direct flights to Seoul
Posted on 8 March 2016 - By Aaron Ngui
http://www.thesundaily.my/news/1721794

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government is in talks with three airlines to provide direct flights from the island to Seoul, Korea.

State Tourism Development Committee chairman Danny Law said discussions were going on with local budget airline AirAsia and South Korean airlines Korean Air and Asiana Airlines.

He said an incentive was offered by the state where US$10 (RM41) will be given to the airline for each tourist flown into the state.

Law said this was part of efforts to tap into other tourist sectors and to grow the tourism industry here.

He revealed that the state administration has began efforts to promote Penang in Korea as well as Myanmar.

“We are doing our part by promoting as a tourist destination,” he said in a press conference yesterday adding that direct flights from Yangon, Myanmar, to Penang will begin near the end of this month.

Law earlier attended the soft opening of the Asia Comic Cultural Musuem which showcases the history and development of comics in the
Asian region.

He also welcomed some 2,000 visitors of the museum from China who are here as an incentive organised by multi level marketing company
Perfect (China) Co Ltd.

KUCHING: Hong Kong Airlines’ inaugural flight to this city from Hong Kong touched down at Kuching International Airport (KIA) at 5.30am yesterday.

Upon arrival, the plane was greeted with the aviation industry’s ‘water salute’ while taxiing into the parking apron.

The maiden flight took three hours 30 minutes departing from Hong Kong International Airport at 1.55am, with the return flight at 6.20am and arriving at Hong Kong at 9.55am.

On hand to receive passengers and aircraft crew members upon stepping out from the aircraft were permanent secretary to the Ministry of Tourism and chief excutive officer of Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), Datu Ik Pahon Joyik and the Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd general manager (marketing) Mohamed Sallauddin Mat Sah.

The maiden Hong Kong Airlines flight HX715 with more than 80 passengers was given a Sarawak traditional welcome with the cultural troupe garlanding passengers with Sarawak beads and goodie bags distributed upon their disembarkation from the aircraft.

Passengers were greeted at the arrival hall with a fanfare from the Twin Lions group and hadrah performers from Kampung Boyan.

Following the inaugural flight, the twice-weekly schedule will be every Wednesday and Saturday.

Ik Pahon expressed confidence that this would be the beginning of the much awaited results from the board’s marketing direction. He said the inaugural flight had been long awaited with talks and engagements with the relevant airline since the state hosted Routes Asia 2014.

“For the past several years, we have invested in the market and will continue to work on the state’s accessibility into North Asia with the aim of creating a new ‘hub’ to tap into the Greater China, neighbouring Japan and Korea markets,” he said.

Benedict Jimbau, who is STB marketing director, said the inaugural flight made it into the state’s tourism calendar and should give the local tourism industry a boost in terms of visitor arrival, especially from China and other North Asian countries.

MAHB plans US$1 billion spending to improve congested airports
September 14, 2016, Wednesday
http://www.theborneopost.com/2016/09...sted-airports/

NEW DELHI: Malaysia plans to spend about US$1 billion over the next five years to refurbish and expand its airports as the Southeast Asian country paces infrastructure growth with a surge in passenger traffic, its main airport operator said.

“My main terminal may require some upgrade,” said Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, managing director of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd in a Bloomberg report, referring to Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

He added there are other airports that have grown beyond capacity including the tourist island of Langkawi, Kota Bharu in the north and Kota Kinabalu in Sabah.

The upgrade of facilities is likely to benefit regional airlines such as AirAsia Bhd, Southeast Asia’s largest discount carrier, which are expanding their fleets and adding more routes as rising incomes and competitive fares encourage more Asians to fly. Boeing Co is projecting 100 million new passengers annually in the region.

AirAsia, the biggest operator of Airbus Group SE’s single-aisle aircraft, signed a deal in July for 100 A321neos to help maintain its industry lead.

The proposed investment is a fraction of Hong Kong International Airport’s estimated spending plan of HK$141.5 billion (US$18 billion) to add a third runway.

Singapore’s Changi Airport will have a fourth terminal by 2017 at a cost of S$1.28 billion (US$941 million) to handle 16 million passengers annually.

The Malaysian government will foot part of the planned US$1 billion investment, with the rest coming from Malaysia Airports, Badlisham said in a Bloomberg interview in New Delhi on September 7.

Malaysia’s transport ministry didn’t respond to an e-mail seeking comment.

Shares of Malaysia Airports Holdings have gained about 17 per cent this year, compared with little change in the FTSE Malaysia KLCI Index in the same period.

Kuala Lumpur’s new budget passenger terminal probably will hit its peak annual capacity of 45 million passengers much earlier than projected, although it won’t require much fresh investment as most facilities for planned capacity have already been built, Badlisham said.

The terminal’s main user is AirAsia Bhd, Asia’s largest budget carrier, which last year criticised the facility over water-logging and taxiway cracks.

Direct flights to Jakarta and Shenzhen from Johor soon
Sunday, 25 December 2016
http://www.thestar.com.my/news/natio...om-johor-soon/

KAOHSIUNG (Taiwan): Two new direct flights to Jakarta and Shenzhen from Johor’s Senai International Airport will be launched next month to meet growing demand.

Johor Tourism, Domestic Trade and Consumerism Committee chairman Datuk Tee Siew Kiong said connectivity has always been an important factor for the state’s tourism sector.

“In the past three years we added four international routes between Johor and South-East Asian countries and ridership saw an increase from one million passengers to three million yearly.

“We have also recorded a hike in tourist arrivals by three million to 6.95 million last year since 2013,” he said during an official visit to Taiwan on Friday.

Tee said the new flight to Shenzhen involved an international premier airline while the Jakarta flight would be undertaken by a local budget airline.

“With these additional flights, Senai Airport would be catering to seven international destinations including Surabaya and Bandung in Indonesia; Bangkok, Thailand; Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam; Guangzhou, China as well as the two new destinations.

“There are also flights to seven domestic routes to Penang, Subang, KLIA, Kota Kinabalu, Sibu, Miri and Kuching,” he added.

Tee advised local travel agencies to take advantage of this and come up with interesting packages to capture the Chinese and Indonesia tourism market.

“We are expecting to launch the new destinations in January, so we hope travel agencies can prepare itineraries that starts and ends in Johor,” he added.

In May, AirAsia launched its inaugural direct flight to Guangzhou from Senai International Airport to cater to the state’s increasing Chinese tourist arrivals.
