Feasibility study on Kulim airport to conclude in next few months
Tuesday, 18 April 2017 | MYT 5:09 PM
Quote:
KAJANG: The Transport Ministry and the relevant authorities are conducting a feasibility study for the proposed Kulim International Airport which will be completed in the next few months, said Deputy Finance Minister I Datuk Wira Othman Aziz on Tuesday.

Othman said the proposed airport would help accommodate the growing tourist arrivals in the northern region, which were currently being catered to by the Penang International Airport and Langkawi International Airport.

“We need a new airport in the northern region, and we are considering the proposal to have it in Kulim, but the decision will be made once the studies have been completed,” he said after the launch of Property Market Report 2016 in Kajang on Tuesday.

Also present was Director-General of Valuation and Property Services Dr Rahah Ismail.

Meanwhile, on Forest City development in Johor Baru, Othman said the developer would not be offered any more incentives to complete the project.

“We can’t keep giving them incentives up to the point when we can no longer afford it. We can’’t create policies which would cause a loss to the country,” he said. - Bernama

MELAKA: Composites Technology Research Malaysia Sdn Bhd (CTRM) aims to become a billion ringgit company in two years, on the back of a rapidly-growing global aviation sector.

CTRM group chief operating officer Shamsuddin Mohamed Yusof said this during a media briefing at CTRM's plant in Batu Berendam here today.

At the briefing, held in conjunction with the announcement of the company winning the "Best Improver Award 2017" from Airbus at the Supply Chain & Quality Improvement (SQIP) programme in April in France, Shamsuddin said that the company registered a revenue of RM855 million in FY2016.

He also told the media that this year, the company, a unit of DRB-HICOM Group of Companies, is spending RM93.4 million building a sixth building in Melaka, scheduled for completion in Feb 2018.

He said that Airbus currently accounts for 70 per cent of CTRM's business at present.

AirAsia to add more international destinations from Johor Baru this year
BY ZAZALI MUSA Friday, 23 June 2017

Quote:
SENAI: AirAsia Bhd plans to add at least two or three international destinations in the region connecting Johor Baru by this year to attract more regional tourists to the state.

AirAsia Bhd chief executive officer Aireen Omar said the airline would be looking at cities in China, Indonesia and India as the three countries offered good prospects and growth for the company.

“We will inform you (media) when the new routes between Johor Baru and the cities going to start, definitely it is going to take place this year,’’ she said.

Aireen said this at the launch of the inaugural three weekly flights between Johor Baru and Kuala Terengganu, the ninth domestic route served by AirAsia in and out of Johor Baru.

The other domestic routes served by the airline from Johor Baru include Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Kuching, Miri, Tawau, Sibu and Kota Kinabalu.

Presently, the airline has five international destinations from Senai International Airport to Bangkok, Guangzhou, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta and Surabaya.

“We look forward to expanding our southern hub in Johor Baru and connecting it to more destinations in the future and provide better connectivity to air travellers,’’ she said.

Aireen said the airline was happy with the passenger load factor on AirAsia’s flights in and out of Johor Baru of between 85% and 90% for both domestic and international sectors.

Asked whether Denpasar in Bali could be one of the three new international destinations, she just smiled and replied it could be but declined to give more details.

Separately, Aireen said Air Asia had in 2016, flown more than 420,000 air passengers in and out of Terengganu and with the new route connecting Johor Baru and Terengganu, the number of passengers were likely to grow further.
Meanwhile, Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Md Derick Md Basir said the new domestic route was important as it offered convenient access.

“It should encourage tourism and economic activities between the southern and east coast and will continue to work closely with Air Asia to add more routes to Johor Baru,’’ he said.

Md Derick said with Iskandar Malaysia progressing and developing, the economic region has become a significant for business, leisure, education and medical tourism hence promoting air travels.

Meanwhile, AirAsia signed an agreement with Airbus yesterday to order an additional 14 A320ceo aircraft to meet higher than expected near-term growth in the carrier’s regional network, it said in a statement.

Langkawi International Airport expansion project to be completed by Aug 2018
By EMBUN MAJID - August 16, 2017 @ 12:01pm

Quote:
ALOR STAR: The RM89 million Langkawi International Airport (LIA) expansion project will begin this September and is expected to be completed by next August.

State Education, Transport and Housing Committee chairman Datuk Tajul Urus Mat Zain said the project, which has two phases, will be carried out in 10 months.

Tajul told the state legislative assembly that the project was approved in the National Economic Council Meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in June.

He said the project will be carried out by Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd (MAHB).

The first phase involving the expansion of the parking area will begin next month while the second phase will begin by Oct 15.

“The second phase involves the expansion of the arrival hall, commercial terminal, toilet, prayer rooms and driveway to the main terminal,” he said in his answer to Nor Saidi Nayan (BN-Kuah) this morning.

To an additional question from Saidi on whether an aerobridge would be built at the terminal, Tajul said it has been taken into consideration.

According to Tajul, the RM89 million cost did not take into account an aerobridge.

“If an aerobridge needs to be built, MAHB has to upgrade the terminal building from one to two floors.

“The cost to upgrade the terminal building is estimated at between RM300 and RM400 million,” he said.

Tajul said as at the end of July, a total of 278 flights landed at the airport weekly while the number of chartered flights increased from 24 in 2013 to 77 last year.

He added that between January and July this year, LIA received a total of 23 chartered flights.

“At the moment Langkawi has two international flights connecting the island with Singapore and Guangzhou in China,” he said.

Deal close to completion for additional flights
Thursday, 5 Oct 2017

Quote:
SIBU: The additional flight for the Sibu-Kota Kinabalu sector, which will be served by low-cost carrier Air Asia, will come to fruition once negotiation for it is completed.

The Sibu-Kota Kinabalu sector is currently served by MasWing using a jetliner.

Townsfolk including businessmen had long been asking for additional flights, with the Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry taking the lead to make the official request.

Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, in providing an update on the flight at the launch of Sibu International Lantern and Food Festival on Tuesday night, said the sector was among seven sectors in the state which his ministry was still negotiating with relevant parties.

“I am quite confident that by the end of the negotiation, we will be able to secure the Sibu-Kota Kinabalu flight.

“Apart from that, we are also trying to look at the Sibu-Singapore route and hopefully, we can also secure it in the near future.

“Give us a little bit of time for this as there are some details that need to be ironed out,” he said.

Datuk Abdul Karim said with the right approach, they would be able to bring all seven new flights to the state.

“Ever since I took over the ministry, I have been trying to increase connectivity flights not only to Kuching but other towns in the state,” he added.

The Kuching-Shenzhen sector, he pointed out, would start operation this December while the Kuching-Fuzhou sector would probably be introduced early next year.

The Kuching-Fuzhou sector would be of interest for those with ancestors in Fuzhou, as it is one of the largest cities in Fujian province, China.

Pahang hopes new airport for Pulau Tioman can be realised by 2019
By Bernama - October 28, 2017 @ 10:19am

KUANTAN: Pahang hopes construction of a new airport in Pulau Tioman can be realised by end of 2019.

State Tourism and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin said the airport was necessary to ensure Pahang would not be left behind in the Visit Malaysia Year 2020.

“Pulau Tioman is among three most beautiful islands in the world., but lacking in terms of transportation as tourists use the ferry to go there and the service is halted during rough seas.

“The construction of the airport can ensure the arrival of tourists at all times,” he said.

He said this in response to an announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, when tabling the 2018 Budget, that a study was being undertaken by the government on a new airport in Pulau Tioman.

Meanwhile, Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob welcomed the announcement on the RM200 monthly assistance for three months to padi farmers while waiting for the harvesting season, as well as the increased in allocation for Tekun Nasional and Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM). — BERNAMA

New Airport Can Boost Tioman Tourism

Quote:
KUANTAN, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- A new airport on Pulau Tioman will stimulate the economic and tourism sectors on the island, acclaimed as one of the most beautiful in the world, said Pahang director of tourism Datuk Ishak Mokhtar.

He said the airport would help boost the number of tourists to the island, located off the east coast of Pahang in the South China Sea.

Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, when tabling Budget 2018 in Parliament last Friday, said a study was being undertaken by the government on a new airport on Pulau Tioman.

Ishak said: "Pulau Tioman has always been a welcome destination for local and international tourists but the island has some setbacks in terms of transportation. The tourists take the ferry to get to the island but the monsoon season can make the sea rough and force disruption of the service," he said to Bernama.

He said the number of tourists to Tioman continued to rise annually, adding that between January and June this year, 155,939 tourists visited the island.

Ishak said the existing airport on Tioman, located next to Kampung Tekek, handled chartered flights which could carry about 12 passengers at any one time.

"The island badly needs a new and bigger airport," he said, adding that there had been a proposal to build an airport in Kampung Genting, with part of the runway jutting out to the sea, and which is able to handle Boeing 737 aircraft.
