SABMiller Will Invest $125 Million in Angolan Plant (Update1)
Share | Email | Print | A A A By Candido Mendes July 10 (Bloomberg) -- SABMiller Plc, the world’s second- biggest brewer, said it plans to invest $125 million in a new brewery and soft-drink factory in Angola as part of its African expansion program. The facility will produce 500,000 hectoliters (1.32 million gallons) of beer and 200,000 hectoliters of soft drinks annually, Samuel Jeronimo, manager of the company’s Angolan unit, said yesterday. The investment will bring to $250 million the amount the company has invested in building new plants and upgrading existing ones in Angola over the past 18 months. “It’s the country we’re investing the most money in, in Africa,” Jeronimo said in an interview in the capital, Luanda. “It has been for the past two years.” SABMiller generates about 10 percent of its annual earnings in Africa and the London-based company is investing to increase the proportion of income earned from the continent, excluding South Africa, where it was founded. Last month, the company said it expects the four breweries that will open in Africa this year to be the most profitable of the 10 plants it is starting around the world. In addition to Angola, the company this year started production in the semi-autonomous region of Southern Sudan and plans to open breweries in Mozambique and Tanzania. Angola, a nation of more than 16 million people, vies with Nigeria as Africa’s biggest oil producer. The country is rebuilding its economy after more than two decades of civil war, in which more than 1 million people died, ended in 2002. ‘Significant Share’ SABMiller currently has a “small but significant” share of the market. It has interests in three breweries and soft-drink factories in the country, the largest of which is a joint venture with Empresa de Cerveja N’gola in the southern Huila province. The plant produces 820,000 hectoliters of beer annually. SABMiller plans to encourage local producers to provide supplies of raw materials needed for beer and soft-drink production, Jeronimo said. Apart from water, the company imports all the ingredients needed to make its products. A three-year project will create incentives for the production of corn, sugar and barley, Jeronimo said. SABMiller will also partner with domestic companies in the production of bottles, crates and labels. SABMiller will not “necessarily” invest in those ventures, though it will look at the “best possible options,” he said. The company has brewing or beverage interests in 32 African countries, according to its Web site. SABMiller shares were unchanged at 12.31 pounds in London today. The stock has advanced 5.9 percent so far this year, outperforming the benchmark FTSE 100 index, which has declined 6.8 percent over the same period.
