Portugal’s EDP and Angola’s Sonangol join forces to invest in Angola [ 2010-07-23 ]
Lisbon, Portugal, 23 July – Portuguese group EDP and Angola’s Sonangol are to build the first combined cycle power plant in Soyo, Angola, under the terms of a contract signed Thursday in Luanda, the Portuguese group said in a statement issued in Lisbon. The project, whose financial advisers are Millennium bcp and Banco Privado Atlântico (BPA), is the result of a partnership between EDP and Sonangol signed in July 2009, by setting up stake-holding company EIH, which is owned by EDP, Sonangol and Banco Privado Atlântico with 30 percent each and the remaining 10 percent by FiniCapital. According to Angolahub news agency the combined cycle power plant will represent an expected investment of 400 million euros, it will take 3 to 4 years to build, and is the first concrete result of the partnership signed by the two groups. Sonangol is also building the first liquid natural gas (LNG) project in the country, in Soyo, northern Angola. (mac |

three new dams
Portuguese business group to build three hydroelectric dams in Angola [ 2010-07-27 ]
Luanda, Angola, 27 July – Portuguese business group Escom plans soon to build three hydroelectric facilities in the Angolan province of Lunda Norte, the chairman of the group said Monday in Luanda. On the sidelines of the signing of an investment contract to build the “Palanca Cimentos” cement factory, to be built in the municipality of Lobito, Benguela province, Hélder Bataglia said that construction of the three dams was expected to cost US$400 million. The chairman of Escom also said that construction of the three facilities would make it possible to boost the energy supply in the east of Angola and allow for several industrial projects to be set up, such as cement factories. Bataglia also said that the project had been approved by Angola’s Council of Ministers and was now in its initial phase of execution. (macauhub)

another cemet factory
Business groups from Angola, Portugal and Brazil to build cement factory in Angola [ 2010-07-27 ]
Luanda, Angola, 27 July – Three business groups from Angola, Portugal and Brazil are to invest US$430 million in building the Palanca Cimentos cement factory in the municipality of Lobito, in Angola’s Benguela province, under the terms of a contract signed Monday in Luanda with the National Private Investment Agency (ANIP). The investment, by Angolan group Gema, with 40 percent, Portugal’s Escom and Brazil’s Camargo Corrêa, both with 30 percent, aims to build a factory with capacity to produce 1.8 million tons of clinker per year and 1.6 million tons of cement and create 550 direct jobs. The laying of the first stone for construction of the industrial complex is scheduled for this Wednesday, and construction of the factory is due to begin within four months, according to news agency Angolahub. The chairman of the Gema group, José Leitão, noted the importance of focusing on cement production as it was a strategic resource for all types of infrastructure construction and public works. Leitão noted that Benguela province had been chosen for the project because it was a strategically located region, which would make distribution of the product to the north, centre, south and east of the country easier. more factories
Angolan plastics company plans to build factory [ 2010-07-26 ]
Luanda, Angola, 26 July – Angolan plastics company Angoplásticos plans, in the medium term, to build a factory for plastic and disposables, the company’s manager, Carlos Ferreira said Sunday. Speaking to Angolan news agency Angop, Ferreira said that the company was carrying out an economic feasibility study to assess the costs of setting up the factory, which equipment and technology to use and the best province in which to set it up. Ferreira also said that, with the construction of the factory, the company would move away from only distributing and selling plastic products, thus contributing to the government programme for Angola’s industrialisation. Meanwhile, he noted, the company was carrying out its programme of opening up branches in the country’s interior, which began in 2007, by opening facilities in the provinces of Huambo and Benguela. Angoplásticos, which has its headquarters in Huíla province, employs 26 people, 17 of which in its offices and 9 in its central warehouse which distributes products imported from Namibia and sold in the Angolan provinces of Huambo and Benguela. final phase of testing luanda railways
Luanda railroad company in Angola starts goods transport between Luanda and Dondo [ 2010-07-22 ]
Luanda, Angola, 22 July – Angolan railroad company Caminhos-de-Ferro de Luanda (CFL) this week started the regular transport of goods between Quilómetro 30, in Viana municipality (Luanda), Catete and Maria Teresa (Bengo), Zenzo do Itombe and Cassualala (Kwanza Norte). The head of CFL’s operations, Aurélio Russo, said that these journeys aimed to test the railroad and allow for compacting and balance of the rails, after refurbishment work on around 400 kilometres of track. Russo also said that two journeys per week would be carried out and that the company would charge 80,436 kwanzas (US$867) per truck for 44 tons. On 15 July, CFL once again linked up the locations of Luanda and Dondo, 10 years after it was forced to halt the link due to Angola’s civil war. Cambambe municipality, located 75 kilometres from Ndalatando, capital of Kwanza Norte province, is a confluence point for those travelling from Luanda (capital) to the northeast, south and east of Angola and vice-versa
