Angola to start building new refinery this year
LUANDA (Reuters) - Angolan state-run oil firm Sonangol will start building a long-delayed $8 billion refinery this year in a bid to cut back on imports of refined products, which have weighed on the economy, its oil minister said.
Jose Botelho de Vasconcelos said the new 200,000 barrels-per-day refinery would enable Angola to become self-sufficient in refined products. The oil-producing nation's sole 37,500 bpd refinery accounts for around 30 percent of domestic needs. "We consider that the only way Angola will get out of this situation is to build a new refinery," he told Reuters in an interview. "The conditions are in place for the construction to begin this year." The new refinery, located in the port city of Lobito, in southern Angola, was originally expected to be ready by 2011. Due to a series of financing delays, the start date is now expected to be in 2014, according to the latest government forecasts. There are also plans to build a third refinery near the coastal town of Soyo in nothern Angola, which is also the site of the country's first liquefied natural gas plant, Botelho de Vasconcelos added, without providing details.

Angolan government approves contracts for financing infrastructure refurbishment projects
Luanda, Angola, 26 Aug – The Angolan government Wednesday approved financing contracts for projects to refurbish the Matala dam, in Huíla province, and the Cambambe hydroelectric facility, in Kwanza Norte province.
The government also approved contracts for construction of the power transmission line from Gove to Dango, where a sub-station will be built for the regional high and medium voltage grid in Huambo. The contract for construction of the power transmission line from Viana to the Luanda International Fair (Filda), as well as the contract to supply and install two gas turbines in the Futila region of Cabinda province, were also authorised by the government, according to Angolan news agency Angop. Shoprite Spends Usd 13 Million On New Supermarket
Huambo — The South African Shoprite Group is investing USD 13 million in the construction of a supermarket, in Huambo city, whose works started in the first quarter of this year.
Speaking to Angop, on Wednesday, in Huambo, the Project director of the new supermarket, Hein Coetzer, said that this business infrastructure is being built in a 500-square metres zone and will be inaugurated in the first fortnight of next October. He explained that the establishment comprises four big shops that will trade diverse products at accessible prices, with highlight to home furniture, cloths, food and beverages. Hein Coetzer affirmed that this supermarket will create 100 new direct jobs and will also avoid people to go to other provinces or overseas to purchase products that they need.

I think three years is going to far. 10 years is okay. My car was ten years old and it was fine.

If you litter you ought to get fined by 150 US dollars! Everything has to be clean and have a good look. There are only two countries in Africa where plastic bags are banned: Rwanda and Gabon...this is a disaster, knowing how people throw those bags around: places looks filthy and shabby. This annoys me profusely. In Malaysia you risk expropriation by the government if you don´t repaint your house regulary so that it looks presentable. I love such measures as things in tropical countries look rotten pretty quickly due to the harsh weather conditions.Arabian Gulf countries like Kuwait, UAE etc. are super clean, just like Singapore, Malaysia or Japan.

Looks are important, that´s what made America big – at least it played a very important role...big bang projects in all sectors of society and image!!! Hollywood – if we like it or not – is a multi-billion dollar industry that got big by means of looks and bing bang projects. and how dare you say that I don´t care about poverty reduction? You should know by now that I am feverishly proclaiming to fight poverty , how many times have I said that I hate, detest, deplore poverty..the worst form of human slavery .....it is a sign of weakness and weakness makes you vulnerable, non-empowered and helpless....Asians seem to have embraced it way better than Africans, as a whole, who still clink to lassez faire too much which is annoying. Sorry, but I have been to Malaysia as well and talked with many Malaysians. The country is just wonderful and on comparing Africa to Malayia one is left groping for words or one could just weep. I don´t say everything is perfect (yes, there are run-down places as well...but those that are run-down still look better than most inner cities on African soil) Malaysia lives in another century when compared to Africa....something that Africa should aspire to. in Malaysia they don´t just talk but act. This is what has propelled Asians forward and will make them become NO.1 in the world: never be satisfied with anything, always keep on improving...if you are excellent go to make it brilliant! ![]() PS: Popa, if you want to talk the matter over, send me a PM...this thread is dedicated to “Angola´s economy”. I don´t want to see your constant (subtle) provocations in here. |
