OWWA Invites OFWs, Dependents to Register With "Microsoft Tulay"
Wednesday, 08 October 2008 By Rebecca Cadavos MAASIN CITY – The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) invites children and families of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to register immediately for the free Information Technology (IT) training known as “Microsoft Tulay”. OWWA in a press release received this morning said that the free training program will be coordinated with its partners, Blas F. Ople Policy Center Foundation , a non-government organization together with Microsoft Philippines which will be launch in Tacloban City on October 14, 2008. “Microsoft Tulay” is a special internet computer training program geared towards bridging not only the distance but also the generation gap between homesick OFWs and their loved ones, their families. OWWA Microsoft Tulay project provides Filipino overseas and their families’ access to both technology and technology training that will hopefully enable them to find better career opportunities and give them a way to communicate across distance. It will deliver sufficient training in order to provide a baseline of skills for unskilled workers, the source said. The OWWA program also enables OFWs and their dependents to exploit the possibilities of e-mail, video conferencing and MSN Messenger to stay engaged with each other during their years of separation. The training will be free of charge. OWWA established (11) Tulay Community Training and Learning Centers (CTLCs) globally. Here in the domestic level, there are (6) centers located at OWWA Regional Welfare Offices in La Union, Legaspi City, Cebu City, Cagayan de Oro City and Zamboanga City. While, overseas CLTCs will be found in HongKong-SAR, Taichung, Riyadh, Rome and in Milan, Italy. The applicants are encouraged to contact OWWA Head of Office at Pasay City or the Regional Welfare Offices throughout the country for more information on the said program. (PIA-Southern Leyte) |

Gov. Mercado Tells Mayors to Focus on Income-Generating, Service-Oriented Projects
Thursday, 09 October 2008 By Bong Pedalino MAASIN CITY - About a dozen local chief executives in the province, others duly represented, were advised to zero in on something that matters most in governance: projects that generate income and at the same time provide service to their constituents. The advice -- it sounded more like a challenge -- came from Gov. Damian Mercado. “Focus on projects that augment income and give service to the people,” Gov. Mercado told the Mayors and their representatives during the Governor’s Time at the Provincial Development Council (PDC) meeting held at the RK Kangleon Function House, this city, October 6. He cited in particular the development of bus terminals as a sure revenue-inducing venture while ensuring service to passengers. This city’s bus terminal used to earn P 2,000.00 a day for the city’s coffers, but with further improvements, it is now earning about P 15,000.00 a day for over a couple of years already, Gov. Mercado stressed, citing the case of Maasin City as a tangible example. Gov. Mercado had served as Mayor of Maasin as it changes status from a town into a city for three consecutive years since 1998 -- he was instrumental in the change of status during his first term -- and over the nine-year period he has greatly changed the city’s landscape by adding land mass through a reclamation project, an idea that was hatched during the time of Mayor Eddie Espina in the 1970s. The sprawling new terminal sits on the reclaimed land, and a spacious public market, also located within its grounds, will soon be operational early next year. In the Governor’s Time at the PDC, Gov. Mercado also included farm-to-market (FMR) roads and electricity service expansion to far-flung areas as among the projects to be considered, for while these may not be directly income-generating, these can enhance services to the rural folks. He called on the Mayors to focus on one priority project next year as a way to deliver the goods to the people. “We should have one direction in our programs, the towns, the city, and the province. We will harmonize and help each other,” Gov. Mercado further said. (PIA-Southern Leyte) |

Haay naku, sana magawa din ng Tacloban, although the city government is doing its share in making the city clean, nasa mga residents din kc yun . . . pero in fairness, malaki na rin ang ipinagbago ng Tacloban in terms of cleanliness. . . uhmn, just need a little more push. . .

Southern Leyte to Host SCUAA 2008
Friday, 10 October 2008 By Rebecca Cadavos SOGOD – There are (11) state colleges and universities throughout region 8 that will participate in the forthcoming State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) competition that will be hosted by the Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) Sogod Main Campus here. In a report released by Honeylette Malasaga, Secretary to the SLSU Vice President Dr. Jude Duarte, the SCUAA over-all chairman said that the competition will be on October 25 to October 30, 2008. There at least (15) events to be contested which include Miss SCUAA, ballgames, athletics, dance competition, swimming, teakwando, chess, among others. The competing educational institutions are as follows: Leyte Normal University; Eastern Visayas State University; Samar State University; Samar State College of Agriculture and Forestry;; University of Eastern Philippines; Normal State College; Biliran Institute of Technology; Eastern Samar State University; Palompon Institute of Technology; Visayas State University; Tiburcio Tancingco Memorial Institute of Science and Technology and the SLSU. The highlight of the week-long activity is the Miss SCUAA. It has 9 lovely candidates representing each (9) institution which will be held on the 26th, at the SLSU Campus, it was learned. The opening ceremony will start on the 25th, Saturday. The first in Southern Leyte, SCUAA 2008 invited guests to witness the event, like Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer Hon. William Martinez from the Philippine Sports Commission; Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Regional Director Imelda Laceras, Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Director Leo Caneda both based in Tacloban City; Bishop Precioso Cantillas from the Diocese of Maasin; Cong. Roger Mercado, Gov. Damian Mercado, local officials, among others. The SCUAA logo, according to the source has interlocking rings that represents the coordinated and unwavering commitments of the (12) state universities and colleges (SUCs) throughout the region in the pursuit of academic excellence and supreme service especially to the unprivileged sectors of society. While the boat seen represents the SLSU and the (5) sailors as it symbolize the five campuses. It also signify unity of the campuses, despite enormous challenges in carrying the responsibilities of molding students to become productive and law abiding citizens through active involvement in sports.
