Dave Niehaus Passes Away

Dave Niehaus, the Voice of the Mariners, passed away November 10, at his Bellevue, Washington home. He was 75. Niehaus was the last original employee of the Mariners, who began play in 1977. 3,643 fans attended an informal gathering Saturday at Safeco Field. They met with members of Niehaus' family, viewed some of Niehaus's memorabilia and shared memories.

LED ribbon boards at Safeco

from http://www.ancsports.com

I would love Safeco to change its color scheme in the near future, perhaps from the green theme to navy blue, silver and some dark cyan. Make it look like the home of the Mariners.

History made at Safeco

For the first time since the DH was introduced in 1973, National League rules were enforced in an American League ballpark on June 24, 2011. Because of a conflict with a U2 concert in Miami, the June 24-26 Mariners/Marlins series was moved to Safeco Field. The Marlins are the home team, while the Mariners are playing "road" games at their home ballpark. NL rules in an American League ballpark. Last year, Safeco was the venue of the first game broadcast in 3D and now this!

This is the shot that sums up why people call it the best retractable roof stadium in baseball, its a baseball park first and a dome second! The shape of this place is so great!

Game on September 26

Yesterday the Oakland Athletics' Chris Carter hit a pop up that hit a steel truss of Safeco's roof. That's the 3rd time that has occurred this season. It never happened previously. Safeco opened July 15, 1999.

Possible new scoreboard!

Following last week's season finale, someone asked Mariners television voice on ROOT Sports on Twitter, Dave Sims, who also does NFL football and NCAA basketball on Westwood One radio, if "Howie and Chuck", Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln and Mariners president Chuck Armstrong, were going to add a new main scoreboard at Safeco. Sims replied, "It's coming".
Before the 2010 season, a new out-of-town scoreboard was installed behind the bullpens and prior to the 2011 season, new LED ribbon boards were installed on the fascia of the second deck. We have reason to be optimistic about a new scoreboard with a larger video screen to debut at Safeco before next season!

I wonder how that process works. You don't just call the 800 number and ask for a #6, extra large, with the Mariners' colors in trim.
