Hey folks, I made a diagram update for this building based on the recent pics and info. The building is currently 73 meters or 240 feet tall and I would like to thank Danny for the height figures. They helped me a lot with the accuracy of this update

Roof height used below

That design decision to tack the balconies on after the fact really seems to be paying off. What started as a painfully slow process has completely shifted gears and now appears to be one of the fastest growing towers in the City.

You can bet developers are licking their chops over that telephone building too. But it won't ever be residential. It's got too many valuable plug-ins for a tech tenant.

Not to mention, it has no windows.

33 Thomas Street is an exceptional building.

"It is often described as one of the most secure buildings in America, and was designed to be self-sufficient and protected from nuclear fallout for up to two weeks after a nuclear blast." (from the linked wikipedia page)

It is also a great example of brutalism. It takes character to build a 550 ft. tall building skyscraper fully clad in granite. While its main purpose was switching, people do work in there. AT&T security research, for instance. The amount of physical space needed for switching equipment has greatly decreased from the analog days. I wonder if this and the other towers are mostly empty these days, or subleased to data centers.

Either way, this is a special breed of skyscrapers, and 33 Thomas is the only one of these three that is also of architectural value. It would be a shame if they cut windows into that fašade.

Update: this page has an extensive list of all the NYC telecom buildings and their history, including the Art Deco classics from the 30s.

Despite its size and lack of windows, in my opinion it still fits NYC perfectly. You won't see a highrise like that in another city.

Does anyone love that building? I've yet to hear any New Yorkers say anything positive about it.

Leonard is really picking up the pace now. I didn't realize it will be almost as tall as Beekman, that will make an impressive mark on the skyline.

It's an icon, it's the first thing you see coming over from Brooklyn!

33 Thomas St has the better location, it's looks just right there. A design like the Verizon Building shouldn't have such a prominent location. And for that matter. Any tower that would be on 375 Pearl St next to the Brooklyn Bridge for so long would be an icon.

I'm not a New Yorker (obviously), and I only first discovered 33 Thomas Street 1-2 weeks ago, but I definitely love it. Besides its function, I think it also serves as an artistic statement.

It does make me think of the entrance to the Men in Black headquarters from the first movie, though. Not necessarily a bad thing.

I'm a New Yorker and everytime I walk with friends over brooklyn bridge who are clueless about architecture they say how asinine it is; I think it's ok i guess, never really been a fan of it especially for its location
There was a planned reclad a few years back, but I think that's dead now. At least for now
