Historic City Buildings Converted Into Hotels...

Over the past decade there has been a trend in my city to turn buildings that were once used for divers purposes into 'high class' hotels...

The buildings had previously been declared local landmarks but were no longer in use. Since they were landmarks they could not be entirely torn down and replaced; developers then turned them into hotels. Some of the facades were altered and some were left entirely intact.

What buildings in your city are now hotels but were previously something else?

For Boston:

1. The Old Charles Street Jail was built in 1851 and served as as a county jail until 1990. Some prisoners who once resided there include Malcom X and Sacco and Vanzetti.

As of 2007 it is now ironically called 'The Liberty Hotel'

2. The Boston Custom House Tower was built in 1847 with the tower top being added later in 1915..it was used for various government services until 1986 when it lay dormant until 1999 when it was turned into a Marriott Hotel...

1920:

Today:

3. The Ames Building is considered to be Boston's first skyscraper, completed in 1889. This building has not been in use for many years and was quite worn. A developer is spending $50 million to completely revitalize the building in order to convert it into a hotel. It is expected to open Summer 2009...

They haven't started working on the exterior yet...

4. Boston's Police Headquarters from 1925 to 1995 was recently turned into a Jurys Hotel...

Most buildings converted in hotels in Amsterdam are small. 2 very special exceptions.

1. Build as a monastery (Sint-Ceciliaklooster), later the other buildings of the complex became more important, such as the noticeable building of the Admiralty of Amsterdam. Build as headquarters and housing complex for the admirals in service in Amsterdam, including famous admirals such as Michiel de Ruyter. Used as a Royal Inn. hen the old city hall in Amsterdam became a royal palace in 1808, the building became the city hall of Amsterdam for a long time. In 1992 it was converted as one of the top Hotels in Amsterdam called 'The Grand'. It has 182 very luxurious rooms/suites/apartments.

2. A great building is the new Grand Hotel AmrÔth Amsterdam, known as the "Scheepvaarthuis". Build in 1916 as an office building for 6 ship companies. It has 165 luxurious rooms.

That hotel is beautifully situated at a lake with extensive gardens and a golf course. Very nice to stroll around there.

Just to give an example for the not so well off :

The castle is a youth hostel. It is located in Monschau, Germany near Belgium. There are several castles in Germany converted to youth hostels.

Here is the youth hostel in the center of NŘrnberg, a proper city :

SINGAPORE - there are various examples of historical buildings being converted for hotel use.

Some of these were former colonial government buildings, shophouses or individual mansions. Many are small-scale developments that have become 'boutique' hotels.

Personally think this is a good idea in offering a diverse array of hotel choices within a city. Some examples:

The Fullerton Hotel - a former post office

The Scarlet Hotel

Hotel 1929

Hotel Rendezvous - this is an example where a rear extension has been added

Ascott Raffles Place - an old office building turned into serviced apartments

Hotel 81 and Fragrance Hotel - These are a chain of budget hotels. In these examples, the old shophouses have a rear extension added.

Hotel 81 Chinatown
