3. What plans / proposals / ideas have been put forward for the site adjacent to the Beer Engine?

4. Is the Beer Engine considering expanding into the site (I doubt it mind)

I haven't seen him for a year - I used to drink in Whitefriars when he was bar manager, and then the Beer Engine for a while when he ran it, but stopped going over there when the baby came along...

Time to wet the baby's head then!

Is the manager the guy with the short cropped fair hair? Very quiet, softly spoken guy?

Ian - yeah, short fair hair. Used to work in Whitefriars. Nice bloke.

The crane was there to lower the new roof of the Hand & Heart into place.

Also worthy of note, work has begun on restoring some of the shop fronts to their former glory.

The first one appears to be the grocers on the corner of FGS/Bramble Street. Apparently it has sandstone foundations which they're going to unveil. Oooh!

Well there is definitely not a 'To Let' sign on the Beer Engine - I was there on Friday. The place was heaving as usual.

The grocers opposite the pub has now had the shop front replaced. It is a traditional style wooden front painted white. I like it a lot! If they keep up this policy along the whole of the street then it's going to make such an aesthetic difference.

Corner shop upgrade/restoration.

It's a great little conservation programme this. Hopefully the local community will look after it.

Yep, it's looking good.

You can see where they've started scraping the black paint off the lower portion of the Hand & Heart. I bet it'll all be wrapped up soon so they can give it a proper sand blasting. The Design Statement for the building said that the black paint would be removed to reveal the masonry work underneath.

The corner shop looks nice, however, next to it is a prime example of FGS's problems.

Maybe all the shop fronts should be asked to have old-fashioned timber frontages, but retaining their logo styles?

That's pretty much the plan. There are grants available for the shop owners to encourage improvements. As for the buildings that are in a much worse state of disrepair, the idea is to encourage the owners to repair with financial assistance, although it has been made clear that if they are unwilling the Council will look at other options including CPOs. Good if you ask me. I'm sick of all the parasitic (mostly takeaway) businesses that are just there to make a quick buck without giving any consideration to the overall quality and attractiveness of the street.

Those businesses are there because of demand, though. The council can CPO them, but who is going to move into them?

In today's Telegraph there is an announcement for a hotel and mixed use building on the current site occupied by 'French's Corner' and the slip road from the ring road/Skyblue Way into Far Gosford Street.

It's a modern building but is in keeping with the Conservation Area. Impressive.

Ian Harrabin was also on the local radio this morning (live from MIPIM). He confirmed that there are other plans along the street to build timber framed buildings in Elizabethan/16th century style. The Telegraph also confirms that plans are being considered to reconstruct the city wall on Gosford Street/Far Gosford Street.

I think these plans are fantastic. Well done CDP!

Rebuilding City Walls and medieval timber buildings? Absolutely pathetic and corny, not to mention pointless.

Hotel sounds interesting... What exactly is "French's Corner"?

Answering my own question:

French's Corner:

That horrible Indian restaurant. Good riddance. I think Scazmattaz said there was plans for a building here a while ago...

Read the article - in short, it's a speculative development, with no one signed up (Fingers crossed that someone is found at MIPIM). Building looks OK, if somewhat generic... More interesting is the way it'll create more a street scene at the bottom end of Far Gosford Street where it's all currently open and shit.

I don't see any point in recreating City Walls though.
