Shanghai: A trip up China's new tallest building-The Shanghai World Financial Center

Ok, so what does one do in Shanghai after returning from a long vacation home (three months) in Canada? They go up the newly opened SWFC observatory. Yup. I hadn't even been in Shanghai for 24 hours before I was bolting up a Nintendoesque elevator to the 100th floor of China's most recent architectural masterpiece. Was it worth it? H-e-l-l y-e-s.

The SWFC standing proud. With every window now inserted and the whole building bathed I can only muster one word...breathtaking.

Waiting outside in line was pretty brutal. 34C and a humidex reading of around 90%. My body was not yet climatized to the sweltering Shanghai heat.

The interior of the building was a pleasant surprise. Upon entering you're surrounded by small circular three dimensional projection screens attached to the ceiling. All of these animations are the brainchild of multi-media artist Toshio Iwai. The spinning SWFC model was amazing (sorry, no pictures). The display was unlike anything I'd seen before.

At the 96th floor.

This is at the bottom of the hole. Apparently these are the world's highest escalators.

Now for some views

Now at the top of the hole. Pretty tight space.

The floor up here is made entirely of glass.

Views from the 100th floor.

I'm thinking I'm all cool being this high up and then these dudes totally outdo me.

At the Sky Arena on the 94th floor.

And what would a trip to the SWFC be without a parting gift....

image hosted on flickr

Excepted this isn't just any ordinary gift.....

It's probably the coolest thing I've ever bought

Not like this really needs to be said here, but if you find yourself in SH make the effort to visit this jewel of a building.

Hope you enjoyed the tour.

The feeling of veritgo you get from the 100th floor bridge is amazing. The fact the entire floor is glass makes it mind blowing.

We looked at mountains until dawn, and then when dawn came, it was too pretty for me - there was pink and blue and gold, in the sky, and on icy places, brilliant pink and gold flashes, and the snow was colored too, and I said," Oh," and sighed; and each moment was more beautiful than the one before; and I said, " I love you, Momma." Then I fell asleep in her arms.
That was happiness then.
