Night-landing to be fully operational by next month

Permission for recruiting additional staff obtained

At present flights being operated eight to nine hours only

After a slump, number of passengers going up

VISAKHAPATNAM: Permission for recruitment of additional staff required to man the modern airport terminal with night-landing facilities at Visakhapatnam has reportedly been obtained by the Naval authorities from the Ministries of Finance and Defence.

The new terminal with the provision for landing domestic and international flights, is likely to be fully operational by December for which additional staff with required training is needed. It may be recalled that the operation of electronically controlled air traffic at the Visakhapatnam airport is with the authorities of the Navy. At present, it is possible to operate air traffic only for eight to nine hours with the available man power. The present schedule of air traffic is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The airport remains closed during the rest of the day. The authorities concerned have been making efforts to get sanction for the additional man power to meet the requirements at the new terminal. It has to be cleared by the Ministries of Finance and Defence.
Flood protection

The flood protection works at the airport, which were scheduled to be completed by September this year but got delayed, are also nearing completion. The Rs.70 crore work, taken up by the Irrigation and Command Area Development Department, will ensure that the airport is not flooded during rainy season. Flooding of airport during rainy season is one of the major recurring problems at the airport.

Because of this problem, flight services had been disrupted for weeks together. The flooding was caused by Meghadrigedda and Kondagedda.

The project envisages digging of two channels, measuring 6.792 km. and 6.8 km. respectively, to direct water to sea. The Chief Engineer of North Coast projects, G. Prasada Rao, has asserted that the work will be completed in all aspects by December.

Meanwhile, after a sort of slump caused due to various reasons, including high fares, the number of passengers at the airport has been going up steadily.

According to authorities, the number of monthly passengers came down to a mere 42,000 a couple of months ago against the normal monthly passenger traffic of over 60,000. Now, it has crossed the 50,000 mark and the airport authorities are hopeful that it will cross the 60,000 again very soon.

there are 3 aerobridges.
it is the largest airport among tier II cities and the largest indian airport within city limits. capable of handling upto 5 million passengers per year. 6 flights can be parked at the same time.

Wouldn't Mumbai's CSIA be the largest airport within city limits (in terms of passengers and terminal area)

He clearly differentiated two things in his post ... one is that it's largest in Tier-II cities and second that it's the largest airport within city limits ...

unless he meant to say that it's the largest airport among tier-II cities within city limits .... but then in that case, he'd have said it in just one statement

do sahar and juhu qualify as mumbai city proper?
i read somewhere that once completed the vizag terminal will be the largest terminal of any indian city within city limits.
of the discrepancies the only airports as contenders would be mumbai or delhi
but delhi is a state so that rules it out and the only question is that of mumbai.

Vizag could have used a bigger airport. I was looking through the hyderabad airport live departure/arrival list...and saw Vizag listed more than 7 times.

Guys what difference does it make if it’s the largest airport in the city limit or outside the city limit! There is no Sense of that statement at all….an airport is an airport! And we can just say that its big or small…but no need to differentiate it with LARGEST INSIDE THE CITY ,OUT SIDE THE CITY, NEAR THE CITY ,NEAR THE VILLAGE, NEAR THE RAILWAY STATION, NEAR THE BUS STAND! AND BLAH BLAH!

Ha Ha! You surely made the other statements sound foolish. But IMO, you are absolutely correct. It doesn't make any change. BTW, Vizag is a growing city, growth rate among top 100 in the world. It would have been great if they had gone for an entirely new airport with huge land bank for future expansion rather then wasting resources on developing a naval airport which IMO within few years has to be vacated keeping in mind the growth potential of the city. Vizag is no small city either. With a population of close to 3 million (unofficial) it will surely rank among the top 12 cities of India and surely among the fastest growing cities.

Air terminal inauguration

Quote:
The new terminal building of Visakhapatnam airport is likely to be inaugurated in January next, most likely on January 14 on the occasion of Sankranthi. The Customs and Immigration facilities will also be established simultaneously.

These assurances were given to MP T. Subbarami Reddy when he met Minister of State for Civil Aviation Praful Patel and Chairman of Airport Authority of India K. Ramalingam in Delhi.
