Google satellite image of Vizag airport.

I suppose in future the airport will start looking like this, extending the terminal in modular fashion. Area marked "A" can be used for other airside development such as Cargo terminals, second integrated terminal, etc etc. Resourceful utilization of the available land will prevent requirement of another airport maybe for next 40-50 years.

Flew to Vizag and out last weekend. The airport outside is okay, i suppose, steel and glass, and I was surprised to see a complete lack of trees in the area. I think they are all in the process of growing up.

The airport is okay for a small scale airport, but the interiors leave a lot to be desired. Everything gives the feeling of being in one of the old AAI airports. Seems very cluttered inside.

Vizag airport to start 24x7 service
TNN Jun 29, 2011, 01.50am IST

Quote:
VISAKHAPATNAM: It seems the long-pending demand of the Vizagites could take flight soon as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has, in principle, accepted the proposal of running round-the-clock operations in Visakhapatnam airport, if it handles 40 flights in a day.

With Spicejet Airways planning to operate another six services to Visakhapatnam from August-end, the total number of flights would reach 38. Presently, 32 flights are being operated from the Vizag airport to various destinations. The airport officials claimed that this number was far high when compared to other cities like Bhubaneswar, Raipur, Thiruvananthapuram, Guwahati, Lucknow and Patna which operate far fewer flights in a day.

Sources said AAI chairman V P Agarawal had given this assurance to some of the public representatives from Vizag. "If the flight numbers cross 40, round-the-clock services at the airport could be a reality soon," sources said. The airport is under the control of the Indian Navy, which has expressed its inability to run 24-hour operations due to shortage of manpower.

Vizag airport gears up for more intl flights

Quote:
Visakhapatnam airport is gearing up to handle more international flights. At present, the airport sees one or two international chartered flights weekly from Sri Lanka. These flights are connected to the Brandix apparel city here.

According to airport sources, United Arab Emirates’ Air Arabia is keen to operate regular flights between Sharjah and Vizag.

Silk Airways and Sri Lankan Airways are also studying the possibilities to operate international flights from here.

During the last financial year, the airport handled about 725,000 passengers, of which more than 15 per cent were overseas. “Vizag air passengers use Hyderabad, Chennai and Mumbai airports to catch international flights. If international flights operate from here, most of the passengers will go directly from this place,” said Varada Reddy, Air Users Association of India.

The airport has customs and immigration facilities and once more international flight operate from here, these facilities would be strengthened, he said.

“At present, daily 32 services operate from Vizag and we have direct flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad. Another six services will be added from August second week including daily direct flights to Bangalore and Tirupati,” he said.

In the first quarter of the current financial year, over 220,000 passengers used this airport and by end of this fiscal, this number is expected to cross 900,000.

Fly Dubai ready to start operations

The airport here has the infrastructure needed for operation of flights round the clock and there is tremendous potential from the Visakhapatnam region for operation of flights to Dubai and other destinations. More importantly, Fly Dubai, one of the two national carriers of Dubai, is ready to operate direct flights to Dubai.

Then what's the problem? “We are awaiting permission from the Government of India”, says Pran S. Dasan, Fly Dubai representative in India.

“The airport has to operate 24 hours to enable international airlines to plan their schedules,” feel representatives from the industry, air travellers, and members of the Air Travellers' Association of India at a meeting held here on Monday.

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) representative R.V. Raju, Vizagapatam Chamber of Commerce and Industry representative K. Vijay Kumar, and ATA (I) president D. Varada Reddy elaborated on the demand for direct flights from Visakhapatnam. Due to lack of direct connectivity, passengers from the Visakhapatnam region were being forced to fly via Hyderabad or Chennai.

Sriram Ravi Chander, member, ATA (I) and COO of Visakha Container Terminal, gave a power-point presentation on the huge tourist potential of the Visakhapatnam region. He said the growth rate of Visakhapatnam was above 9 per cent, while it was below 5 per cent in Hyderabad during the last two years.

CONNECTING FLIGHTS

Representatives of NRI Parents' Association felt that connecting flights from Dubai to Europe and the U.S. would benefit them. Representatives of recruiting agencies, which hire manpower for the Gulf countries, Janardhan and Vijay Kumar, said they were sending hundreds of persons from Visakhapatnam, mainly to Dubai, for employment every month.

Mr. Dasan, while expressing satisfaction at the positive feedback from the participants, said Fly Dubai, which started operations from Hyderabad a month ago, was focussing on cities such as Visakhapatnam that have tremendous potential.

He said about 170 seats of the 189-seater flight introduced from Hyderabad were full. Of this, 50 to 60 per cent of the passengers were from the Visakhapatnam region.

These passengers were spending more time in shuttling from their home to Visakhapatnam airport and again catching a connecting flight to Dubai from Hyderabad than the three and half hour journey to Dubai. He said the airline was ready to start direct flights once the Government of India gave the green signal.

It doesn't exactly sound like a international flight unless airport operates round the clock (24 Hrs).Air India already operates a flight from hyd to dubai and this one might transit passengers from VTZ and avoid the paper work.

Direct flights to Tirupati, Bangalore

Quote:
There is good news for air travellers from the city visiting the abode of Lord Venkateswara in Tirupati and those going to Bangalore. SpiceJet is introducing flights to these destinations from September 21. The airline will operate 78-seater Bombardier Q 400 aircraft to these two destinations as also a third flight between Hyderabad-Visakhapatnam-Hyderabad from the same day.

The Jet Airways flight to Delhi that was withdrawn a couple of months ago would be resumed from October 1.

Visakhapatnam Airport is handling around 70,000 passengers on an average every month.

The 16 arrivals and departures from the airport would increase to 19 after the three new flights are introduced on September 21.

The number of passengers handled by Visakhapatnam Airport between January and March 2011 was 1,89,265 as against 1,57,080 handled during the corresponding period last year, according to Airport Director K. Srinivasa Rao.

This figure was much higher than the domestic passengers handled by Calicut, Amritsar and Port Blair International Airports and marginally lower than Trivandrum International Airport which handled 1,89,500 passengers during the same period.

It is also higher than the passengers handled by the Custom Airports at Mangalore, Trichy, Bagdogra and Varanasi but lower than Patna Airport which handled 2,17,354 passengers during the same period.

The number of passengers from Visakhapatnam Airport increased from 2,13,632 between April and June this year as against 1,74,856 handled during the same period last year recording a 22 per cent growth in passenger traffic. Visakhapatnam Airport is ready in all respects to receive international flights. Mr. Srinivasa Rao said that efforts were being made by people's representatives and the Air Travellers Association to make airline operators to operate direct flights to various destinations abroad.

“I have also apprised the District Collector and the Principal Secretary of Airports and Ports on the need to provide international connectivity in view of the growth in traffic and development of the city,” he said.

He, however, said that no written ‘Expression of Interest (EOI)' was received from any international operator so far.

He is optimistic that international connectivity would be a reality by the end of the year.

While the Navy, which operates the Air Traffic Control, wants the airline operators to first come out with an EOI, the operators are demanding extension of the watch hours beyond 8 p.m. first so that they could plan their schedules.

One can only hope that the Navy and the airline operators do not sing: “Pahle tum…pahle tum…” (first you… first you) forever.

AI to operate intl. flight from Visakhapatnam airport

Quote:
VISAKHAPATNAM: The port city is all set to get the international airport status in September as a new service to Dubai will be introduced. Sources said Air India (AI) would operate the flight to Dubai from Visakhapatnam via Hyderabad from third week of September.

The daily flight of AI would take-off at 8 am for its onward journey to Hyderabad and Dubai, sources said. Plans are afoot to introduce flights to Chicago and New York, if the patronage for international flights increases.

Sources said four lakh passengers travel from Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, East Godavari and some parts of West Godavari, besides Orissa to various destinations from Vizag airport. Air Travellers Association of India (ATAI) Visakha branch president D Varada Reddy said they are trying to convince the authorities to operate AI flights to Chicago and New York also.

Nod for international flights from Vizag

Quote:
The much-awaited international flight services from Visakhapatnam airport under the control of the Indian Navy is now a certainty with the Navy giving security clearance recently.

A communication to this effect was received by the State government from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) a few weeks ago after Yard Traffic Controllers of the Navy gave the green signal for the international services. Accordingly, the AAI, the State government and the Navy will sit together to work out modalities for introducing these at the Vizag airport, it is learnt.

New terminal

The Vizag airport has a spanking new terminal built by the AAI with a capacity to handle 700 passengers, besides facilities for customs and immigration clearance, a prerequisite for starting international operations. After conducting a study, the AAI is convinced that Vizag airport will have enough passenger traffic and earn sufficient revenue to justify the international services.

Another positive development is the Vijayawada airport will soon get landing facility for A-320 and Boeing 737 flights. Sources said that land would be acquired and a survey was being done by the AAI in coordination with the Collector for the landing of bigger aircraft. It is expected that these aircraft could be introduced in the winter schedule.

But before that, Spice Jet would operate bigger aircraft from Vijayawada airport by the month-end. The bigger aircraft would make air travel economical for all types of passengers and lead to improvement in air connectivity.

Steps were also being taken for expansion of Rajahmundry airport and the district Collector was directed to submit a proposal. The government is keen on bringing in airport-driven development in the State by giving priority to development of new airports and expansion of existing ones.
