Chennai MTC Bus and other Road Transport
This thread is dedicated to updates on Chennai Metropolitan transport corporation (buses operated by Tamilnadu government) and Suburban train services operated by Southern Railways.
These two are the lifeline of public transportation in Chennai Metropolitan currently. Dedicated thread is needed as we see lots of improvement in MTC for past 2 years. I request members to post news/projects regarding MTC and Suburban in this thread instead of Chennai projects thread.

The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (formerly known as Pallavan Transport Corporation Ltd.) is the agency that operates the public transport bus service in Chennai, India. It is owned by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It transports an estimated 4.2 million passengers every day with its fleet of 3080 buses and covers a maximum of 50 km around Chennai.
Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai - Dn.I) Ltd was established on 1 January 1972 with a fleet strength of 1029 buses. The operational jurisdiction is the Chennai Metropolitan area. The Pallavan Transport Corporation was bifurcated into two and a new Corporation, namely, Dr. Ambedkar Transport Corporation Ltd. started functioning from 19 January 1994. Pallavan Transport Corporation was renamed as Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai Division –1) Limited, Dr. Ambedkar Transport Corporation was re-named as Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai Division-II) Ltd., on 1 July 1997. In order to make the Corporations viable and for better administrative control Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai Division II) has been amalgamated with Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai Division I) Ltd with effect from 10 January 2001. The fleet strength of the Corporation as on 1 February 2008 was 3080 with 26 depots, a body building unit at Chromepet, a ticket printing press at K.K.Nagar and Reconditioning Unit at Patullos Road. During the year 2002-2003, 117 buses have been purchased for replacement. GPS in more MTC buses
CHENNAI: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation will introduce Global Positioning System (GPS) facility in 500 buses by the end of this year. At present, 55 buses plying on two routes Tambaram - High Court and Tambaram - Avadi have the GPS installed in them. The facility helps passengers waiting at a bus stop to track the movement of a particular bus, fitted with GPS, by following the information displayed on a board fixed at select bus stops. This would help the passengers use the MTC services according to their convenience, said a Transport Department official. The World Bank had provided a grant of Rs 3 crore for this initiative. The International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore, is the nodal agency for monitoring the project, said an officer of the Transport Department. In order to fix the display boards connected to the GPS, new bus shelters would be constructed in the city and its suburbs. While the MTC has control over nearly 450 bus shelters, the Chennai Corporation has control over nearly 350 bus shelters. They would be renovated and the work would begin soon, said the Transport Department officer told The Hindu. The MTC achieved a record sale of ‘travel as you please’ (TAYP) passes of daily, weekly and monthly modes. The TAYP daily mode pass sale stood at 21,204 in 2007-08, which rose to 2.37 lakh in the present financial year. The Corporation sold 3,200 weekly mode passes in 2007-08 which rose to 5,000 in the current fiscal. As far as monthly TAYP pass was concerned, the Corporation had recorded a phenomenal growth. In 2007-08 nearly 22,700 monthly TAYP passes were sold and this year so far a total of 37,637 passes were sold, the authorities said. Buses have improved much... But the Deluxe buses are not at all maintained...
All buses are very dusty and full of sand ![]() ... Y don't they have the sense to maintain the fleet which will make the buses run smoother and comfortable for passengers.. ?!?!? After all frequent overhauling is known to be efficient!Privatization of maintenance of all the Deluxe buses should be done.. The Articulated Buses (here called vestibule bus) are the worst maintained!?! I happened to travel in route no 54 today... the bus was fully dusty and more over the articulation has become rusty and making noise If this condition goes on, chennai wont get 5000 buses by 2010 but the same 3080 or even below that forcing major of the buses to be dismantled!! |

I think the MTC guys are doing a good job these days. Shows that their awareness level on quality in public transportation has gone up. I would be happy if they also introduce electronic ticketing service and a website listing out the timetables and routes.

MTC should introduce atleast 50 more volvos.. it can then expect good patronage!!.. Volvos should be more frequent! currently the operating gap between two volvo services in a route is around an hour or more.. this should be reduced to at least 20 mins..

s a first step towards this, Southern Railway plans to set up a coaching terminal at Tambaram at an approximate cost of Rs.34 crore. It will have pit lines for maintenance, stabling lines and additional platforms.

The Tambaram terminal should be developed to create atleast 20 platforms for the south-bound trains and 4 platforms for the suburban EMU's. The Egmore station can be made as an additional station for few north and west bound trains.. and two more platform in Egmore can be added to Suburban
The EMU's in the Tambaram- Beach line could not cope up with the demand! Hence all the four lanes in this sector to be dedicated to Suburban while the Tambaram can be a terminal for the south bound trains and if required a 5th line for the long distance train can be developed in this sector.. After all this Beach-Tambaram line was developed in 1934. Then the tambaram- chengalpattu line should be given 2 exclusive EMU tracks and the chengalpattu- Tirumalpur line should be doubled to 2 lines from the current single track!! This should be done in atleast 4 years time to expect good result!! |
