If you go for "Commuters" as concession mode, You have been restricted to travel in particular route by ordinary buses alone. If you opt for Deluxe and AC buses u need to pay for it. |

Safety inspection of BG line next week
News from Hindu: CHENNAI: Commissioner of Railway Safety T.J.S. Naidu will undertake safety inspection of the newly laid third broad gauge line between Korukupet and Ennore on January 28. The Safety Commissioner will inspect the line, including electrification work, along with Chief Administrative Officer R. Ramanathan that day. The line will be opened for passenger once the Commissioner gives safety clearance certificate. ------------------------------------------------------- Even Thiruvallur-Arrakonam 3rd line is completed except the small stretch near Arrakonam. We can expect Thiruvallur-Arrakonam 3rd line to be completed in March. By this more tracks are getting added to Chennai suburban.

MTC can do better in suburbs: commuters
They resent more buses to OMR and less service from Tambaram east to High Court
![]() RISKY RIDE: An overcrowded MTC bus seen near Palavakkam on the East Coast Road, on Friday. CHENNAI: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) does not have many fans in the suburbs. Many commuters complain of the low frequency of bus services, others complain that deluxe services have replaced ordinary buses instead of supplementing them, and others think that there is just neglect of many areas. On Wednesday, a number of commuters at the East Tambaram terminus were complaining of the high frequency of buses to Old Mahabalipuram Road. Their grouch was that since the IT boom in Chennai, more buses have been diverted to that route while routes like A 51 (High Court – Tambaram East) have fewer buses. However, M. Ramasubramanian, managing director, MTC, says: “We have been adding new routes based on public demand. Since there is a huge demand for buses to the IT corridor , we have increased the number of services to that area. However, we have not done this by short-changing commuters on other routes.” Similarly, commuters from West Tambaram complain that there are not enough buses starting at Tambaram while many have been converted to routes starting from Guduvanchery or Vandalur. A. Natarajan, a bank employee working in Nandanam, says that this diversion makes it harder for commuters as the buses are full by the time they reach Tambaram. Recently, Nanganallur residents appealed to the State government to introduce more direct bus services to their area. In North Chennai, Vysarpadi, Kodungaiyur, Mahakavi Bharathi Nagar and Kannadasan Nagar are the worst-hit areas according to commuters. Share-autos swallow the revenue that should have been the MTC’s, feels D. Devipriya, a college lecturer from Mullai Nagar. Residents of Virugambakkam, Alwarthirunagar, and Valasarawakkam also say that they are in need of bus services especially to the Egmore Railway Station. Presently, they have to reach Vadapalani to continue their onward journey. To address these issues, MTC officials say that the fleet strength has been expanded to 3,000 vehicles and new routes have been added for the passengers’ convenience. But activists say that many of these new routes do not help those who cannot afford to spend too much on each commute. T. Ravikumar, president, All India Rail and Bus Passengers Welfare Association, says that the MTC has slowly replaced its regular services with ‘M’ services, on which commuters have to shell out a minimum of one rupee extra. “The MTC should replace all ‘M’ services with regular services, as the ‘M’ service is not a fast service. It does not benefit the commuters,” he contends. R. Selvam, a milk vendor from Agaramthen village, says that converting ordinary services into deluxe or ‘M’ services was an attempt to effect an indirect tariff hike. He asked the MTC to instead increase services to areas such as Ponmar, Agaramthen, Vengaivasal which had a number of residential apartments, schools and colleges and hence quite a few potential passengers. MTC sources say that a number of possible options are being tried. MTC had introduced bus routes such as M151 (Tambaram East-Kovalam), 551A Express (Tambaram East-Kelambakkam), T151 Express (Tambaram East-Kovalam), M127B (Anna Square-Thiruverkadu), which were proving profitable, they say. In this respect, K. Narayanan, research scholar on urban transport and former managing director of State Transport Corporation says that the number of commuters within the city has increased much faster than the fleet expansions carried out by the MTC. In this scenario, it would be extremely difficult for the MTC to satisfy commuters from all areas. As a first step, Mr. Narayanan says that MTC should be concentrating its existing resources on providing maximum service to commuters from within the city instead of expanding out to mofussil areas. Services to places such as Chengalpattu and Mahabalipuram could be provided by other organisations. The MTC would do well to leave those routes and restructure its fleet to serve commuters who were complaining of inadequate services, he adds. 2,000 more buses for Chennai
CHENNAI: The state government will soon introduce 4,600 new buses in the state,
including 2,000 for the city, under the Union government's Jawaharlal Nehru Rural Development Scheme, transport minister K N Nehru said on Friday. Speaking at a function to mark the foundation stone laying for a rest room for drivers and conductors of the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) at Koyambedu bus terminus, Nehru said the state government was in discussion with the Centre to grant funds under the scheme to procure 2,000 new buses for Chennai and 1,300 buses each for Madurai and Coimbatore. The Centre will contribute Rs 300 crore. At present, the state government operates 20,175 buses across the state. Stating that Chennai needed 5,000 buses, Nehru said the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) was operating more than 3,000 buses now. The state government has allotted Rs 15 crore for upgrading MTC depots, he said, adding that steps are being taken to upgrade bus depots and terminuses at places including Vadapalani, Thiruvanmiyur, Semmancheri and Mogappair this year. Referring to the possible reduction in diesel price, Nehru said it would help the transport corporations to become financially self-sufficient. However, the SETC is likely to struggle to make profits even after the proposed diesel price cut, the minister said, and appealed to its employees to work hard to increase the corporation's daily ticket collection. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/C...ow/4023928.cms |

Use of EMU services down on Sundays
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Railways not concerned about revenue as suburban services are heavily subsidised: official -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CHENNAI: EMU suburban services occupancy has reduced by around 20 per cent on Sundays in the city, an official of the Southern Railway told The Hindu on Friday. The Southern Railway recently implemented its decision to reduce the number of EMU suburban services on all Sundays with effect from January 18. It attributed this decision to less patronage in sections such as Chennai Beach-Tambaram, Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu and Chennai Beach-Velachery. The official, however, said that the number of passengers of suburban services taken as a whole had increased by 11 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year. The services on Sundays in the Chennai Beach – Tambaram section were reduced by around 50 per cent with the decrease in the number of suburban services from 162 to 86. The reduction in the Chennai Beach – Velachery section was from 126 to 88. The Chennai Beach – Chengalpattu services were reduced from 72 to 70. After implementation of the decision , many people said that there were a large number of passengers on Sunday. “I had to restlessly wait for a longer period ,” said S. Saravanan, a commuter. “There was crowding also in the psychological sense of the term. I do not take my car frequently as I want to support the public transport. The decision of the railways will only make more people gradually shift to other modes of transport,” he said. According to T. Ravikumar, president of All India Rail and Bus Passengers’ Welfare Association, “The railways should think of long-term goals of making more people use suburban services in the city. They should not think of short-term goals such as reducing operating costs. When experts express concern about traffic congestion with the increase in the number of vehicles on the road and the need for encouraging public mode of transport, this move of the railways will only make matters worse.” According to railway officials, the occupancy was low from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., 11 a.m. to noon, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., and beyond 8 p.m. However, the official said that the railways were not concerned about reduction of revenue as the suburban services in the city were heavily subsidised. The availability of booking clerks was one of the reasons for the reduction of services, an official said. Railway officials said that they were committed to serving the passengers better and the railways may review the decision if a pressing need arose.
