Mamata's Gift to Chennai

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...ow/7576804.cms

The city's suburban network is poised for a big growth with the railway budget, presented by minister Mamata Bannerjee on Friday, talking about setting up a single integrated system to help people switch among suburban trains, Metro rail and MRTS services.

The budget also promises an increase in suburban services, especially on the much neglected Chennai-Gummidipoondi and Tiruvallur sectors.

Gauge-conversion works sanctioned for the Tambaram-Chengalpet line and doubling of the Chengalpet-Villupuram line will help in the introduction of more suburban trains.

The new services will be operated on the Chennai Beach-Gummidipundi, Gummidipundi-Chennai Central, Avadi-Chennai Beach, Chennai Central-Tiruvallur, Tiruvallur-Chennai Central and Chennai Beach-Tambaram-Chengalpattu sectors.

While new suburban services will help commuters if introduced during the peak hours, the gauge conversion works proposed between Tambaram and Chengalpet would help add more suburban services to benefit commuters headed to the fast-developing industrial areas in Potheri, Paranur and others, said a senior railway official.

These works were crucial to enhancing suburban services, he said adding "We are not able to increase suburban services beyond Tambaram because of infrastructure constraints."

The budget also has sanctioned survey for a new line to Sriperumbudur connecting Irungattukottai and Avadi. "This is a long-pending connectivity demand because Sriperumbudur is a fast-growing region and a line should be laid before the entire area is built up," he added.

The concept of an integrated suburban network, which could be considered a prelude to taking off suburban operations from the railways and creating a separate entity like the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation, is to be introduced in Chennai.

Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad have suburban systems whic, the budget says, will be made into separate bodies in the future.

"We had approved the integration plan long ago. This is being included in the budget so that suburban networks can be integrated with Metro rail. But there is no immediate plan to bring suburban system under a separate body," said a railway official.

He also said "bringing suburban system under a separate entity like in Mumbai will help in better development of facilities because exclusive funds can be sanctioned for suburban development."

Meanwhile, many commuters in the city welcomed the budget announcements. T Sadagopan, a frequent traveller on the Chennai-Tiruvallur line, said "new trains will be good if introduced during the peak hour. We need more services during that time. The nine new trains announced are also good for the state."

However, T Prabhakar, who regularly commutes from Chengalpet to Chennai, said the budget should have focussed more on improving amenities at all suburban stations and also on trains.

That is real good news for Chennai . I hope the Sriperumbudur-Avadi Track Materializes .Along with that they could also consider extending the proposed Chennai Metro-Phase 2 from Luz-Poonamalle to Sriperumbudur An integrated body will definitely facilitate the growth of suburban services in all directions in the Chennai Region as a whole.

You are wrong Arul - This additional services were announced in July 2010 by SR general Manager along with time table release. They are introducing that now

The new 9 services announced in the budget is separate

I think it is not actually 8 new EMUs. It is 8 new services. For the above 8 new services, they are just adding a single EMU to the sub-urban services. The 9 new EMUs announced for Chennai is definitely not enough.

Hopes on IR and MTC lost.
Now need to Believe CMRL. Athavuthu nammala kai vidathu pola.

Good to see Thiruvanmiyur - Tambaram via Radial Road. This had been a much needed service.
And the Cognizant associates working in Pallikaranai facility and TCS associates working in ChennaiOne facility on Radial Road will be very happy with this.

There is a discrepency in the route followed by v21. I noticed 2 services in this route in inauguration(TRI 2767,TAI 1597) one by tbm nd odr by trivanmiyur.... The digital display in tri bus says via vlcy,madipakkam,pallavaram,vandaloor........while tbm bus says via vlcy ,kamatchi hosptl,pallavaram,vandalur......
Noticed all the other(except v21) newly inaugurated buses yesterday night....
21P got a decent patronage than all the other buses since it runs via vlcy madipkm keelkattalai thereafter goes with less ppl....
Other buses have oly few ppl in it....

Hope v21 will gain good patronage if operated via the first route thro madipakkam b'coz it wud just become an extension of M1 bus which already has a very good patronage and frequency.....

New rail services, bus routes bring cheer in north, west Chennai

M Balasubramaniam, an office-goer in Avadi, is happy with the introduction of six new suburban train services and five new bus routes for commuters in north and west Chennai last week. It is not because he thinks the new services will provide comfortable travel but because they could at least bring a little relief from the increasing congestion.

The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) on Friday introduced five new routes Karukku-Koyambedu, Ambattur-Vivekananda House, Red Hills-Sri Ramachandra Medical College, Oragadam-T Nagar and Ambattur-Tambaram on Friday with a total of eight buses (with an average of six trips a day) on the routes. The residents of both northern and western suburbs have for long been demanding more train and bus services, to cater to the increasing number of commuters coming to the city daily.

And, Southern railway introduced two new services between Chennai Central and Arakkonam on Thursday and two services each between Avadi and Chennai Central and Tiruttani and Chennai Beach on Friday.

"These services should have been introduced a long ago as boarding buses and trains during peak hours is a daily ordeal for us. During peak hours, we are forced to miss the trains and buses several times since they are overcrowded. We are happy that the MTC and Southern Railway chose to increase their services in this sector. But this helps to solve the commuters' problem only to a little extent,'' said Balasubrmaniam.

However, commuters couldn't take advantage of the new services on Saturday and Sunday since as many as 38 services on Chennai Central-Tiruvallur, Avadi-Tiruvallur, Beach-Avadi, Tiruvallur-Chennai Central and Avadi-Beach sectors were cancelled due to line and power block in connection with the construction of a road-under-bridge between Villivakkam and Korattur.

Many train commuters wanted Southern Railway to increase the frequency of peak hour services between Chennai Central and Arakkonam. "The railway should also come out with more services to Chennai Beach from places like Arakkonam, Tiruvallur and Avadi. There are only a few trains to Chennai Beach between 10am and 3.30pm,'' said K Vijayalakshmi of Thiruninravur.

Bus commuters felt MTC should have introduced one of the five services through the newly-laid Chennai Bypass. "It will reduce 50% of distance and time to places like Maduravoyal, Tambaram and Porur from here,'' said N Karunakaran, a worker in Ambattur Industrial Estate.

However, MTC officials rule out any such plans now. "We won't have much passengers en-route on Chennai Bypass,'' said a senior official.
