Connectivity issues plague suburban areas

CHENNAI: Crossing the GST Road and the railway station to reach East Tambaram is a nightmare for Madhusudhanan, a senior citizen from Mudichur. But he goes through the ordeal regularly because he has no choice. It is not just the elderly people, students and office-goers too have been facing hardship crossing the section, as the Metropolitan Transport Corporation has withdrawn its services ever since the the bridge was under construction. Irate passengers commuting between East and West Tambaram have been complaining about the issue for the past three months to the transport department authorities, said Sridhar, a resident of Madambakkam.

"With the local body elections nearing, it is high time that the authorities restore the bus services to the western part," said Naganathan, a regular commuter. What was planned in 1986, became a reality in 2011 and it would take a decade for people to see buses plying on the bridge, connecting the eastern parts to the city and the airport, said Bala, anotherangry passenger.

The erstwhile 51G, B51 and51H services connected the twoTambarams but the services were terminated on the eastern side, citing construction works. After the termination of bus services, elderly people find it hard to cross the railway station and the subway across the GST Road to reach the West Tambaram bus terminus, explained K Balu, president of SKGM Residents Welfare Association. The growing population along the Tambaram-Velachery main road was a concern for the MTC, said Balu. Residents living in the interior areas of Camp Road, Madambakkam and Vengaivasal are forced to shell out more money for autos.

ReachingTambaram in a bus during peak hours itself is a herculean task, said Rangarajan, a resident of Sudarshan Nagar. Road rokos and protests by Madambakkam residents have become a monthly affair, said retired Lt Col Sundar. Bus services were simply not proportional to the population; though people living along the main road had transport convenience, areas located off the road were facing the brunt. Mere expansion of city limits would not bring any solution until departments worked in tandem, said Sundar.

According to Jagannathan of Eastend Residents Welfare association, MTC services to interior Vengaivasal and Madambakkam do not ply on time and they cite poor road conditions and low collection for the problem. There are no buses after eight in the evening and even autos are not available in certain areas, forcing people to depend on private transport.

The authorities at the MTC haven’t responded to any complaints filed so far, claimed Sundar, a resident of Padmavathy Nagar. When City Express contacted the transport authorities, they declined to comment, citing the election code of conduct.

MTC gears up to target techies in Chennai

The huge buses of IT companies that choke Chennai traffic at peak hours might become redundant soon.

If the proposal of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) and IT industry body Nasscom is anything to go by, software employees working in the IT corridor might actually take MTC buses to reach their offices.

MTC has proposed dedicated bus services to companies located in the IT corridor that stretches from Madhya Kailash junction to Siruseri to cut down the number of private buses. The corporation has offered to ferry IT employees via special buses with GPRS systems to decongest the roads.

“The larger plan is to connect these systems to office PCs and personal mobiles of employees to track their location,” said B. Parayath, co-ordinator of Chennai CitiConnect, an NGO assigned to collect initial data.

The NGO had been asked to collect “to and from” passenger data and hubs in start and end points for feeder services, based on which a call on both the routes and number of buses will be taken.

Initial data has zeroed in on Velachery, Adyar, Thiruvanmayur and Saidapet as key transit hubs for traffic along the corridor. “About 37 per cent of traffic towards the IT corridor originate from Velachery, Adyar and Thiruvanmayur alone,” said Mr Parayath.

Though over 240 companies are located along the corridor, only 8-9 big companies like Cognizant, TCS, HCL, Accenture, Wipro etc. contribute to most of the traffic.

“On an average, about 23,000 employees travel along the stretch daily while the current MTC facility has a peak output capacity to carry only 12,500 passengers,” he pointed out.

The idea has found favour with most ITfirms. “With an ever-increasing workforce, IT companies find it increasingly difficult to co-ordinate on logistics and also to find parking space for buses within their campuses,” said a Nasscom source.

We have seen lot of messages like this in the past. Implenting smart card in 3 months, changing ladies seats, mini bus, gps in online, bus location via sms by tie up with Airtel. MTC is such a worst and waste entity in the world.

It is really a good idea. But, for that MTC needs to procure new buses and increase the fleet size and have modern technologies to be implemented. When will that happen?
I will be really happy to see this happen.
No private buses and only MTC in the Chennai Capital Region.

Chennai city expands, but MTC doesnot. recently read that they are not going to procure buses because of metro and mono rail. greatest comedy. Mtc and Trains should contribute to each others growth and not replace one another.
