Today TOI says MTC to get 464 new buses today out of announced 3000 new buses for 7 transport corp.
all 464 will be ordinary bus only.
bus count will be 3421 to 3885 after this addition
later 176 buses will be added after 2 months which was alloted last year
Soon MTC fleet will cross 4000 meeting the wilbur smith recommendation 2014

MTC to get over 450 new buses today

Chennai: Of the 3,000 new buses that were announced for the seven transport corporation across the state in the budget last week, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation will get 464 new buses. Chief minister J Jayalalithaa will formally launch the buses on Saturday. “Buses will start operating soon after,” an MTC official said.

Since the average age of buses in the corporation is 3.5 years, there will be no replacements. “All of them will be added to the running fleet,” said the official. With the new addition, MTC’s fleet will increase from 3,421 to 3,885. Last year, 176 buses were allotted for the corporation but they haven’t made it to the fleet yet.

“Body building works are going on for these buses which are expected to be added to the fleet in a couple of months,” said the official. When these buses are added, the fleet size will cross 4,000, meeting the Wilbur Smith recommendation for 2014.

Drawing flak from passengers for increasing fares and running excessive deluxe buses, MTC has played it safe this time by augmenting only ordinary buses. After the hike, the number of commuters dropped from 56 lakh to 50 lakh per day. TNN

Have they reduced for 7H alone or for 7M also? Earlier they both had 2 Volvo services. Thanks

At present they reduced one 7H Volvo Service. From last year onwards 7M is plying only one bus.

Mugappair West Depo time Keeper said that today New Route introduced J70 from Mugappair West to Guindy Industrial Estate. He also said that two buses are plying in J70 route via Mugappair Eri Scheme, Mugappair East, Collector Nagar, CMBT, Vadapalani.

this shows the poor state of TN Politics in the last 20 yrs..

Misinformation from TOI... I guess

as per the report, MTC was supposed to get 464 buses, but today the total 464 buses were for all transport corporations put together...

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Saturday inducted 464 buses of State Transport Corporations (STCs), including 389 new vehicles and 75 refurbished ones.

As many as 250 of the new buses will be operated on new routes.

At a simple ceremony organised at the depot of the State Transport Corporation here, she handed over the keys of the new buses to 16 drivers and advised them to discharge their duties carefully, keeping in mind the safety of passengers and road users.

According to an official release, the STCs in Tamil Nadu operate 20,861 buses to various parts of the country and 2.1 crore passengers use them every day. In Chennai metropolitan area alone, 55 lakh passengers commute by these vehicles.

To improve the services and provide passengers better vehicles, the Chief Minister had ordered the purchase of 3,000 new buses at a cost of Rs.539.83 crore. They would replace the buses which were six years old and those that had clocked seven lakh kilometres.

Besides, the government decided to refurbish those vehicles whose chassis and engine were in good condition but not the superstructure. Accordingly, 1,432 vehicles were selected in the first phase and the Chief Minister ordered their refurbishment at a cost of Rs.97.58 crore.

A special feature of the new buses procured for the Tamil Nadu Express Transport Corporation is that they have emergency exits.

Those who took part in the function included Transport Minister V. Senthil Balaji, Chief Secretary Debendranath Sarangi, and Transport Secretary T. Prabhakararao.

Last time when in DMK period they did not do this much. For Example When ever they introduced a new route the route number is in the name of either source or destination place.
