EXPANDING OPERATIONS

MTC buses for Vellore, Katpadi

Jeeva | TNN

Chennai: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), whose operational jurisdiction extends to 50 km from Parrys Corner in Chennai, will operate, for the first time, buses to Vellore, Katpadi, Kancheepuram, Tindivanam and Villupuram from Friday until Deepavali. About 300 buses are expected to be operated on four days.
“Since most of the buses going to places like Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi and Bangalore refuse to take passengers who want alight at places en route, we plan to operate our buses to places that are not more than 120-130 km away from Chennai. As we may not have more passengers in the city during festival time, we felt we can utilise 250 to 300 of our services to help passengers going to the neighbouring districts,’’ a senior MTC official told The Times of India. These buses will run from the CCMBT at Koyamebedu, he added.
The MTC will depute its own drivers for these services. “The distance will be fixed to enable the drivers to go and come back in eight hours,” another official said.
The MTC, which has about 3,300 buses, has decided to operate the newly-introduced deluxe buses for the new initiative. Passengers have welcomed the MTC’s move and the drivers have also responded positively. “We ourselves have been suggesting it for several years now. Diverting about 300 of the 3,300 buses during the festival time will not affect the passengers here. By utilising just 10 buses from every depot, a huge festival crowd of passengers at Koyambedu can be reduced,’’ a driver in Anna Nagar pointed out.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is predicted 3 Lakh people will travel from Chennai Metropolitan to various parts of the state on 24th! Already regular trains bound for Nagercoil, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Sengottai, Trichy, Erode, Salem and Coimbatore were running with huge W/L and special for south TN, Central and western TN also got filled up...

And SETC, TNSTC and Private buses also ran out of bus seats on 24th!! Already SETC/TNSTCs have announced 3000 special buses for diwali eve across different parts of the state...

And MTC also jumped into helping the people to get transited to their home towns from the city. Really a good co-ordination. But even then, we can see tommorow mega rush in Central/Egmore/CMBT/Guindy and Tambaram!!

Rly stations’ security system on BOOT model

New Delhi: Railways will implement the integrated security system at key stations and all suburban stations in metros such as Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai under build-own-operate and transfer (BOOT) model. The Railway Board has approved the implementation of the integrated security system at important railway stations under BOOT model.

Some stations will also have security systems on outright purchase model with annual maintenance contract for CCTV system, electronic access control, personal and baggage screening system and explosive detection and disposal system. The outright purchase model with annual maintenance contract has been approved in two phases. Railways has identified 185 stations in 45 divisions, including 17 stations of Kolkata Metro Railway, as sensitive or vulnerable.

This is when an underground metro rail will be very convenient - unaffected by any severe weather on the surface (sun, rain, snow, hail, tornadoes, el nino!!!!)

50 MTC buses will start from Central instead of Broadway in the early morning between 04:00 to 06:00AM.

This is to facilitate long distance travellers using Central station.

This is a good move!!

If such facility is available from Egmore/Tambaram/Perumbur, then it will be much helpful for Chennaities.

Panel to study bifurcation of MTC

The state government is once again planning to bifurcate the Metropolitian transport Corporation (MTC) to improve bus services in Chennai. The government has formed a committee to recommend the ways and means to bifurcate the corporation. The committee is headed by Shiv Das Meena, executive director, TNEB and coordinated by Rama Subramaniam, managing director, MTC and Shiv Ramakrishnan, director, Institute of Road Transport.

According to a senior official at MTC, the city would be divided into two zones, South and North Chennai, which would have two corporations managed by one common managing director but two general managers (Operations). The decision is being taken in view of the increasing demand on public transport and bifurcation would help in covering those areas, especially the suburbs, that do not have enough routes or frequency.

The bus transport system in Chennai has a history of amalgamation and bifurcation after it was nationalised in 1947 when there were merely 30 buses on city roads. In 1972 the departmental set up was converted into a company set up by forming the Pallavan Transport Corporation Limited with a fleet strength of 1,029 buses. With increase in the fleet strength, Pallavan transport Corporation Limited was bifurcated as Dr Ambedkar Transport Corporation Limited and Pallavan Transport Corporation Limited in 1994.

But again these two corporations were merged into a single entity called the MTC.
But officials argued that bifurcation had become necessary as the present fleet strength of 3,500 is expected to touch 4,500 in the next three years and managing so many vehicles and their operating staff by a single corporation would be difficult. The MTC after suffering a loss of Rs 3 crore a day till last year is now earning a daily operating profit of Rs 1.6 crore.
“We are close to the break even point after we introduced new buses and new services, specially over long distances,” said a senior officer.

It is the first point - these are the return fleet of 554, 597, 599 etc., run by AN depot. AFAIK, no 27C A/c service has been started.

Cheers,
Raj

10+14=24volvos. i think 20 were supposed to be added this year, which means another 6 should be coming soon.

And for thiruvanmiyur-guindy, you have 370(via velachery), otherwise switch buses at tvmr-gandhi mandapam-guindy . no idea about timings, neither do the mtc

I guess that 6 has already come in... coz they cant have so many routes with 14 buses... I saw 2 volvos at the same direction in some 15-20 mins difference for 3 routes
597 - 2 volvos
554 - 2 volvos
29C - 2 or 3
not sure abt the no. for the rest..

19B
570
370
599
M23
521A
7M
T51

Here's a list of Routes for MTC buses.. I keep updating it periodically.. I don't know who created it.. but kinda nice.. There are still many routes tat are not listed...

State Government is using the Jail land for GH expansion!!

They could choose any place in the city for another grand GH for the city, but those lands are required for Egmore/Central link.
