Think there are 30 volvo buses. First, we started with 10, then 14 + 6; So totally 30. MTC is planning to add some more fleet by summer

Can we include leyland's and the marcopolos in this category? We are looking for no of volvos operated or no of A/C buses being operated in each city? I feel that the volvos stand out from the others in design and performance. Any takers?

Computerised reservation counter opened at Tiruttani

It was constructed at the cost of Rs.20 lakh

KANCHEEPURAM: Tamil Nadu was the first among the States having best infrastructure in the Public Health sector, according to Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Anbumani Ramadoss.

He declared open a computerised passenger ticket reservation counter constructed at the cost of Rs.20 lakh at Tiruttani Railway Station in Tiruvallur district on Wednesday.

Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss said that the Union Health Ministry had pumped in Rs.1,850 crore for infrastructure and healthcare projects in rural areas in Tamil Nadu under the National Rural Health Mission in the last four years.

Trained nurses were appointed at rural health centers, as well as sub-health centers in the State to ensure that timely medical assistance was extended to the needy.

Union Minister for State (Railways) R. Velu lived up to the expectations of Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss by ensuring that almost all metre gauge lines in Tamil Nadu were converted into broad gauge lines.

He had brought nearly one-fourth of total investments made by the Indian Railways during last four years in various projects, to Tamil Nadu. Further, Mr. Velu had brought train services to people living in those areas where buses would not stop, Mr. Anbumani said.

Mr.Velu said that passenger amenities and infrastructure development works to the tune of Rs.1.78 crore had been taken up and implemented at Tiruttani station in the last four years. A sum of Rs.20 lakh had been allotted to take up improvement works for drinking water supply at the station.

The question was about AC buses, and Starbuses are not Airconditioned! They are normal rear-engine buses. Anyways, BEST operates about 31 such buses. For some reason, they were not a hit in Mumbai, and BEST constantly faced technical problems with the bus. One even went up in flames!

Suburban train service disrupted

Suburban train services were badly hit on Friday morning due to persistent rain, leaving travellers
high
and dry.

Train services were disrupted between Kodambakkam and Chennai Beach after tracks at Egmore got submerged in floodwater. Many people who turned up at the Park Station had to make alternate plans of travel. “They should have at least announced cancellation of services because I’ve been waiting here to take the train to Chennai Beach,” said a commuter, reflecting the harrowing time people had.

Most train services operated from Tambaram to Kodambakkam. As rainwater flooded the Avadi EMU shed, skeletal services were operated on the Madras Moore Market Complex-Arakonam and Chennai-Gummidipoondi sectors. Mail and express train services were not disrupted; they were delayed though. There were delays on Friday morning at the Chennai Central Station and Egmore Station as some of the tracks were submerged.

At the city’s airport, passengers who arrived on Thursday night were left stranded as the pre-paid taxi counter was closed. Many of the taxis that had left earlier, ferrying passengers, had not returned thanks to the floods and consequent traffic snarls.

MTC suffers huge losses

About 10 Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses were rendered useless after being stuck in the rain. The rain also caused the
MTC a loss of Rs 1.25 crore by way of ticket collection on Wednesday and Thursday.

While a bus (M7S-Thiruvanmiyur to West Saidapet) got submerged at the Arangana-than subway in Saidapet, the engines of 10 others were damaged. “We cannot use these buses anymore. The rainwater has washed away the grease and oil in almost all the 3,300 buses and spoiled the springs and all of them will require fresh servicing. The damaged parts will have to be replaced,’’ an MTC official said.

The poor passenger turnout, officials said, saw MTC generate just Rs 1.05 crore in revenue on both Wednesday and Thursday, compared to the average daily collection of Rs 1.65 crore to Rs 1.70 crore.

About buses.
Its slow progress. But;in ten/15 years time all the metros will mostly have either new non a/c buses or a/c buses.
The problem is that India(S Asia in general acctually) is very slow to take up new tech.
So we can imagine that as Indian metros are modernising their bus fleet to todays standards cities like Shanghai, tokyo, london, NY for example may well have electric or hydrogen bususes.Or driverless buses that work on stanav controlled from a central location.
Indian decision makers seem to be incapable of imaginaning the future and acting accordingly.

MTC to run AC buses to Kancheepuram

TNSTC, Kancheepuram, will also be allowed to operate services to Broadway

KANCHEEPURAM: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Chennai, will operate two air-conditioned buses from its domain to Kancheepuram, according to Transport Minister K.N. Nehru.

Speaking at a function held here on Tuesday to mark induction of vestibule services in the fleet of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Villupuram), Kancheepuram, he said that the MTC at present operated 30 air-conditioned bus services within its domain.

Out of these, two would soon be extended up to Kancheepuram for the benefit of pilgrims and tourists visiting the town.

Further, the TNSTC, Kancheepuram, would also be allowed to operate its services to Broadway in Chennai from Kancheepuram in one or two days. This would fulfil Labour Welfare Minister T.M. Anbarasan’s plea to allow TNSTC, Kancheepuram, to operate parallel services on the routes in which the MTC had already extended or introduced its services to different destinations in Kancheepuram district from Chennai.

Introduction of 1,800 new buses into the MTC fleet had resulted in steep increase in the daily passenger movement in Chennai.

Earlier, around 39 lakh people used to use the MTC services every day. It had increased by another 10 lakh. The frequency of service on major routes had also been reduced from 20 minutes to 3 minutes, Mr. Nehru said.

He also gave away best diesel consumption awards to 15 drivers and handed over promotion letters to four staff.

Later, talking to reporters on a recent statement of Union Minister of State for Railways that train charges were very low compared to bus charges, Mr. Nehru said it would be absurd to compare train fare with bus charges as the trains had not less than 25 to 30 coaches.

Further, the charges collected from train commuters to travel in 90 per cent of the coaches were much higher than remaining coaches attached in the same train.

While the charges for each km of travel by buses in Tamil Nadu had been capped at 28 paise in spite of the steep hike in fuel cost, neighbouring States had fixed it at 58 paise a km, he said.

Uthiramerur MLA K. Sundar, Kancheepuram MLA Sakthi Kamalammal, Collector Santosh K. Misra, Managing Director of TNSTC (Villupuram Division) C. Paramasivam, and General Manager of TNSTC, Kancheepuram, N. Rajendran were present.

Nice to hear MTC reaching Kanchipuram with Volvo services. Any idea about the route of the service inside the city?

I think 4 up and 4 down services are possible with 2 buses!

i think it's quite silly to send intra-city Volvos on inter-city trips...

it's not like Chennai city is overflowing with Volvos - frequency is pathetic as it is, and sending the buses on 60-70 km trips out of the city definitely isn't going to help...

Even these long distance MTC buses may start from Broadway. And new routes will be covered by this volvo in CMDA boundary,

But dont know how much time it will take from broadway to kanchipuram bus terminus!

This present gvt will add more volvos next year, so we can see steep raise in volvos!!

good that they are adding more volvos but the infrastructure needs to keep up!! The govt needs to do something about the drainage system or else most of the buses are going to be rendered useless.
