TNSTC spreads its wing into Chennai core city
Kancheepuram-Broadway bus service launched
Staff Reporter KANCHEEPURAM: Labour Minister T.M. Anbarasan flagged off a new inter-district bus service from Kancheepuram to Broadway, at a function here on Monday. The new service would be operated on 76 B route via Maduravoyal, Amijnikarai and E.V.R. Periyar Salai to reach Broadway. While it was stated that the new bus service would be operated as ‘Express’ service only, the TNSTC officials remained tight-lipped about the fare, and the running time of the new service. Meanwhile, enquiries reveal that the Kancheepuram-Adyar service, launched a few months ago on route no.79, was not being operated regularly and most of the time the Adyar service was operated as cut service up to Tambaram, citing frequent traffic jam on East Tambaram-Velachery Road. However, the officials claimed that the Kancheepuram-Adyar service was being operated regularly and the bus terminates at Indira Nagar instead of Adyar. http://www.hindu.com/2008/12/09/stor...0958270200.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------- But the picture of the news shows the old design of TNSTC, atleast they could have come up with low floor services!

48000 Commuters daily? I Guess its wrong. I guess it must be 48 lacs. I can see in the MTC Website that they claim to carry 47.16 lac commuters daily.

Udhagamandalam: There is a move to modernise checkposts in various parts of the State, said Transport Minister K.N.Nehru here on Saturday.
Participating in a function organised to press into service new buses on about 30 routes, he said that though there were about 90 lakh vehicles in the State, the income earned from them was only about Rs. 1,400 crore. Increasing income If the checkposts were better equipped they could keep track of all the vehicles. As a result it would be possible to increase the income by about Rs. 1,000 crore. There was also a proposal to set up integrated checkposts at a couple of places, he added. Pointing out that now buses which had served for about seven-and-a-half years were being replaced, Mr. Nehru said that the period should be reduced to five years. To achieve this, Chief Minister Karunanidhi had instructed the department to get 3,000 new buses every year. Unlike the previous regime, the DMK was not for privatisation. Regarding the Coimbatore sector which included the Nilgiris, he said that the annual loss was about Rs. 10 crore. Despite the loss it was possible to provide new buses only because of the assistance provided by the Government by way of grant and loan. Claiming that many were switching over from cars and two-wheelers to buses in places such as Chennai, the Minister said that it was due to the vast improvement in the services. Shortly, 1000 new buses would hit the roads on a single day in Chennai. Mr. Nehru said that the transport sector was being enthused by the personal interest taken by Mr. Karunanidhi. High priority was being given to the welfare of the workers. An interaction with union leaders would be held on October 10. Since Udhagamandalam was a popular vacation destination, a glass body sight seeing bus would be provided for the convenience of tourists. Khadi Board Minister K.Ramachandran, who presided, said that the transport sector was growing by leaps and bounds in the State. It was a reflection of the manner in which the State was progressing under Mr. Karunanidhi. The Nilgiris Collector Santosh K.Misra said that during the last fiscal the Nilgiris had got 70 new buses. This fiscal it was likely to get 60 more buses. Udhagamandalam MLA B.Gopalan and Coonoor MLA A. Soundarapandian spoke. Mr. Nehru also inaugurated an on-line reservation facility. Managing Director, Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, K.Jaganathan welcomed the gathering. General Manager M.Ponraj proposed a vote of thanks. Later, Mr. Nehru told media persons that the functioning of driving schools would be streamlined. A training academy would be established in Chennai at Rs. 4.5 crore. In a phased manner, all the express buses would be equipped with GPS facility. courtesy http://www.hindu.com/2007/10/07/stor...0751750300.htm

Good to know! Now that TNSTC VPM(Villupuram) has started to put a no. of Deluxe buses like the MTC, we're gonna get a gud frequency of buses in all the routes. MTC and TNSTC VPM will together be very massive in chennai.
So, by next year probably in march, MTC will be operating around 4000+ buses in chennai with few contributions from TNSTC VPM (atleast 100 by then??) I heard the suburban train strength and operation distance is also gonna be increased in sometime. (When are they gonna do it?? after 10 years?? )Southern line to touch Thindivanam and south-west line to join western line at arakonam (been much delayed). |

1000 buses on one day?
That would be a nice achievement if this government can to it. -------------------------------------------------- Kewl, Thiruvallur-Arrakonam 3rd line is nearing completion and for 4th line funds are alloted in the present budget. The bridges built for 3rd line can accomodate the 4th line too. So by 2011, there will be 4 tracks right from Central to Arrakonam for 62KMs. And in Beach-Tambaram side, the Tambaram-Chengalpattu MG line is not yet dismantled to put the 3rd BG line and there is not even a proposal for 4th line from Tambaram and Chengelpattu so far. Chengalpattu-Villupuram 2nd line GC is also not yet started.

More Buses!
Quote:
5000+ buses sounds great, but where r they gonna ride it? The roads are already jammed with an assortment of vehicles and it would only be a burden on the existing infrastructure. I guess trains are the need of the hour. We have Got MRTS, Beach Tambaram Line going North-South and Beach - Tiruvallur Line catering North - North Western parts and the Gommudipundi Line for North. One thing Chennai sadly misses is East - west rail corridors. Let the swanky, state-of-the art whatever Metro come at its own pace. The govt could atleast expedite MRTS last phase and have some east-west lines proposed so that traffic can really be decongested in the city. I dont think people will mind to ride on the ICF Dubbas, instead of those stuffy MTC buses and Share autos. Just a thought! |
