Bhutan - One Picture a Post

The Kingdom of Bhutan is a landlocked nation in South Asia. It is located amid the eastern end of the Himalaya Mountains and is bordered to the south, east and west by India and to the north by China. Bhutan is separated from Nepal by the Indian state of Sikkim. The Bhutanese call their country འབྲུག་ཡུལ་, Druk Yul (land of the thunder dragon).

Foreign influences and tourism are regulated by the government to preserve the nation's traditional culture, identity and the environment. Accordingly, in 2006 Business Week rated Bhutan the happiest country in Asia and the eighth happiest country in the world. The landscape ranges from subtropical plains in the south to the Himalayan heights in the north, with some peaks exceeding 7,000 metres (23,000 ft). The state religion is Vajrayana Buddhism, and the population is predominantly Buddhist, with Hinduism being the second-largest religion. The capital and largest city is Thimphu. After centuries of direct monarchic rule, Bhutan held its first democratic elections in March 2008.

I am a big fan of Bhutan !!

Thimphu, Phuentsholing, Paro, Punakha, Wangdue Phrodang, Trashigang, -- these are places I wanna visit at least once in my life ! The people are peaceful and happy ! Almost everybody wears the traditional dress "gho" ( male ) and kira for ladies

But the problem is visa. Except for SAARC nationals, we need to pay $200 entry visa per day !! Am not sure if they've changed this policy. Will certainly fly into Kolkata and from there will take bus straight to Phuentsholing border.

Celebrations for the coronation of the new king

From BBC NEWS:

The new king of Bhutan has been crowned in a lavish coronation ceremony in the isolated Himalayan kingdom.

King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, 28, an Oxford-educated bachelor, becomes the world's youngest monarch.

He has become head of state of the world's newest democracy after his father abdicated in 2006 as Bhutan changed to a constitutional monarchy.

Bhutan held its first democratic elections for a new parliament and prime minister in March.
