I kind of like how the windows jut out and the base in context to the curvature in the sidewalk. It's nice but it is no master-piece.

i don't see what the fuss is about. Although the building is somewhat plain, there is nothing really wrong with it.

It's not just plain. It's plain and ugly in a brutalist way.

Hope they won't proceed to build this/it gets killed by the credit crunch. Looks like something straight out of the 70s.

This next to Empire State, sorta disgrace

Yeah I sort of agree. It's actually growing on me.
There's nothing super spectacular about it, but nothing bad either; in this sense it's a great addition to the area.

What on earth is wrong with brutalism?
It can be beautiful!

This tower is perfectly fine, not every new building has to attract attention, it never was like that and never will be like that.

This tower is very high-end. The limestone, curved facade on the base and faceted windows are beautiful. Most importantly, this area consists of old, classic buildings. It had been somewhat seedy until recently but has bounced back. An ultramodern building with glass and a wild shape (e.g., B of A, Goldman Sachs, 11 Times Sq., Beekman Place, etc.) would not fit in here.

That is a tower with some good materials. Perfectly done to fit in with the rest of surrounding buildings. Not all buildings need to be all glass to look amazing. So I don't see the negativity with this tower at all.

70s? More like 50s-60s. Anyway, don't exaggerate. While it is no master piece it isn't ugly either. This building is turning out okay, not too bad.

The 50s and 60s had a whole different look. But well, it could also be a product of postmodern 80s.
It certainly unites lots of retro elements.

Anyway, nobody demands a futuristic tower for this place.

On the contrary, something more classical would do more justice to this place and esp. ESB.

Smth like 99 Church Street would have been better.

But well, having a closer look at the 400 5th Avenue renders now, I tend to like it more while time passing by. I might end up being a friend of this tower, if it turns out well. But it should be shorter, at least 50m. ESB has to stick out the way it used to since it's built.

Thanks for the updates. Seems to be a pretty tall tower. Too little to really make an impact on the skyline though. Especially with the Empire State Building right next to it.

Why is this still open? The real thread is in the skyscraper forum, where it belongs.

Also, it belongs here. Its crown will be well over 200m.
The fact that it will be over 200 meters means it belongs in the skyscraper forum, not here in the highrise forum.
