What are the advantages of Europe having 95/98 octane gas, vs the US standard (in UT at least) of 85? This surely accounts for at least a small part of the price difference.

Well, to get the equivalent US rating you have to subtract about 4 points from the European ratings, since the system is a little different. A 95 in Europe would be around 91-92 in the US and Canada.

But in general, we still have lower octane ratings here.

In Toronto right now, for 87 (~91 in Europe) octane (lowest available at most stations):

$1.15 CAD = $1.11 US = 0.75 Euro.
