I used to curse the high tax on petrol when I fist came to live in the Netherlands. I had been used to much freer car use in New Zealand. Back in the late 80s I didnt even bother looking at the price of petrol at the stations as a tank full (about NZ$20-NZ$25)hardly made a dent in my weekly wage at the time.
Now I'm glad I live here in a time when energy costs are due to take off. The Netherlands is far better adjusted to higher costs (due to high taxation) which will make eventual appropriation / mitigation measures less harmful to the general public as NL citizens aren't bound to automobile transport as much as countries such as my home country. The high taxation also gives the government a large degree of leverage should the nett costs increase to very high levels.

Today, I filled up my tank (46 litres) for only € 28,40. I bet such automobile freaks like Chris would enjoy living in the USA

As an environmentalist, I am a bit disappointed that the price of petrol went down in the US, but I believe that the peak that occurred in the mid-summer already set the trend for the general public. Now, people think twice before buying huge and inefficient SUVs because they know the prices may (and will) go up any time. Plus, American automobile makers will learn their lesson and won't count on huge gaz-guzzlers to generate profit anymore.

The prices seems to change daily here - so I might just have been lucky - I don't really follow it much, when I need gas I buy gas - a few DKKs to or from doesn't really matter much..

Forgot to mention I bought Octane 95 if that has any influnce..

Norway:

Well, the prices tend to dip by as much as 1 NOK towards the end of the week (always cheaper on Sunday than Monday...), but a typical average would be 12.50 NOK/litre both for diesel and 95 octane petrol. 1.50+ euros or thereabouts...

We used to have the most expensive fuel in Europe only 10 or 15 years ago. Currently, the price differences are smaller, and given that the average Norwegian makes quite a bit of money, the prices aren't that surprising.

Prices are now about $0.995/liter for regular (€0.714). For diesel, it costs $1.134/liter (€0.813).

They've declined a bit in dollars, but have increased slightly in euro.

But for some reason, gas prices here aren't falling as fast as in other nearby cities.

In York Mills, Ontario? In what currency? The cheapest petrol in Ontario costs 1.018 CAD/Litre which is about 3.61 USD/gallon.

Some interesting charts to compare most of the EU-countries:

Average price in August for unlead petrol without taxes (eurocents/litre)

Average price in August for unlead petrol with taxes (eurocents/litre)

Average price in August for diesel without taxes (eurocents/litre)

Average price in August for diesel with taxes (eurocents/litre)

Interesting, if it wasn't for tax, the prices would be around the same:

Buffalo, US gas prices without tax: €0.603/liter (about $3.16/gal)

EU average price without tax: €0.609/liter

The fuel tax here is 59.3 cents/gallon (~€0.113/liter)
