I wonder why Shell offers almost always the highest fuel prices in Italy.

The level of the fuel prices depends mostly on taxation. Countries with a lower fuel tax on diesel doesn't mean driving diesel there is necessarily cheaper. For instance, in the Netherlands, the fuel tax on diesel is lower than many other countries, but the monthly fees are higher, and buying a new diesel car cost more than a petrol car. In the end, diesel is only interesting if you drive a significant mileage, around 30.000 km/year.

In my petrol station (Asturias, Northern Spain) 2 days ago:

Euro95: €1.05/litre
Diesel: €0.92/litre

I hadn't made a big trip by car for a while and I did a Asturias-Madrid-Asturias (around 900 km) with 50€ of diesel.

It is very similar with the danish situation but I don´t think 30.000 km/year can pay off in DK. I think at least 40-45.000.

The average here in Hartford is $2.66 (€0.499/l) for regular gasoline, and $2.77 (~€0.52/l) for diesel.

Prices are starting to fall again, around 3 weeks ago, there were actually a few stations above $3.

shell petrol variances - no 98 octane

this could be slightly off-topic question, but anyway still in my opinion the best thread to drilldown the issue

is any chance you can tank shell petrol measured 98 octane in your country ?

in Poland there are 3 different shell petrols to choose:

-premium (95 octane)
-shell v-power (95 octane with some extras)
-shell v-power racing (100 octane)

€1.37 for a liter of gas at the local gas station (I was there just now).

For the Americans: that's US$7.38 per gallon (using today's exchange rates).

Does any country have government-controlled prices? In Pakistan the price is set by the gov. Every station in the country has the same price. Exceptions are highways where the price is a bit higher depending on the distance from a main city. But it's just an additional 10 or 20 paisas, which would be less than a cent per liter.

I would say most countries fall just short of that, but not much. In European nations, gas is taxed so heavily the price is essentially set by the government. The government just doesn't dictate the exact figure.
