Brazil mostly has European brands, or American brands with European vehicles (for example Chevrolet Zafira).

But the Government in Brazil does not like diesel powered cars:

Quote:
Brazil is the only country in the world that prohibits diesel by law,” complains Vicente A. Pimenta Jr., account manager at Delphi Diesel. “Most countries are moving to convert to diesel because it's more efficient, reliable, saves energy and is less offensive to the environment; the complete opposite of perceptions of the past.”

“The government won't approve diesel for cars in Brazil because it gets too many taxes on gasoline. And it won't raise the tax on diesel because it doesn't want to hurt commercial transportation.”

I don't understand why americans complain about high gas prices. Even if prices hit 7$/gallon it would still be lower than in Denmark.

An increase of monthly expenses is never a good thing. Some people ask me how European can afford to drive. Well, you just adjust your budget to it. We are used to spend a higher amount of the household budget on mobility. Also, the expense increase has often been on a slow pace, if your monthly fuel cost double within like a year, it's a problem for many people. But if they double in ten years, fewer people will complain about it.

High fuel prices in Europe are not a thing of the last 5 years. They have always been higher, I remember from before the euro, that a liter of gasoline would cost over 2.5 Guilders (in 2000 or so). That is similar to € 1,15 per liter or $ 5.5 per gallon and that was 10 years ago.

Nowadays, approximately 60 - 70% of the fuel price is pure tax. With increasing oil prices, this tax share will decrease (market price share increases) but is still high in absolute numbers. Not only the oil companies have a benefit from high fuel prices, the government as well, because sales tax is a percentage of the total price. If the total price increases, the amount of sales tax increases as well in absolute numbers.

Excise duty is a fixed percentage, for example it's € 0,70 per liter in the Netherlands. This increases every once in a while to keep up with inflation (and also contributes to inflation, it's a vicious circle). Sales tax comes on top of the market price and excise duty and is 19% in the Netherlands, and is generally between 15 and 25% in Europe.

Is it possible to get information about fuel prices in Albania and Kosova?

In Slovenia (8.4.):

unleaded 98 = 1,228 EUR
diesel = 1,125 EUR

Croatia (8.4.):
unleaded 95 = 8,42 HRK (1,15 EUR)
unleaded 98 = 8,52 HRK (1,17 EUR)
diesel = 7,78 HRK (1,07 EUR)

Gas Prices in San Jose, CA (USA)

Filled up my car today at a Unocal/76 station in San Jose, CA...

Unleaded 87 (regular) - $3.079
Unleaded 89 (mid-grade) - $3.199
Unleaded 91 (premium) - $3.299

At a Chevron station across the street...

Unleaded 87 - $3.099
Unleaded 89 - $3.199
Unleaded 91 - $3.299

All prices are per gallon.

I didn't expect my first post here to be about gas prices but people around here get worked up over them very easily. Those of us in California pay anywhere from 20-40 cents a gallon more than the national average.

Gas around here was upwards of $4.50 a gallon a few years ago.

In mostly all Greece (Athens, other cities) the moderate fuel price is from 1,30€ to 1,40€
Sometimes (rare) only in few gas stations the fuel price is higher than 1,40€

I just tanked diesel for € 1.16 per liter. I also saw gasoline for € 1.52 per liter, which is an 8-cent discount from the national average.

Most stations here in Buffalo are around $2.98/gallon (or ~€0.583/liter for our European forumers).

A few stations hit the $3 mark for the first time in over a year.

Still, I don't see them reaching the levels they did in Summer 2008 although anything's possible.

Around here they are in the mid $2.80's/gallon for 87 but they are creeping up again. As far as gas prices in the US vs Europe in Europe the gas mileage is much better and most people drive less than in the US so we seem to feel the pain more.

Christo unfortunatelly there are enough stations with prices over 1,40€.
For example most of the BP stations are even more than 1,50.
The cheapest you can find in Patras those days is around 1,35-1,38 (and mostly not in a big brand)
