Update on the flyover roundabout being built in Prishtina. Sorry for the mediocre photo quality.

The process of reconstructing five tall bridges in the M2 Prishtina - Skopje national road has started. The bridges will have their pillars strengthened, as they carry a lot of weight.

A trip from Brezovica to Prevalle, on the direction to Prizren. The mountains you can see are the Sharr mountain range (PDF).

Construction of Kosovo motorway to begin in two months

Construction of Kosovo motorway to begin in two months

In three years Kosovars will have their motorway, linking their capital Prishtina with the Albanian border and further with the Albanian port of Durres.

In three years Kosovars will have their motorway, linking their capital Prishtina with the Albanian border and further with the Albanian port of Durres.

This has been announced by the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications Fatmir Limaj after the meeting of the inter-ministerial committee for the construction of Pristina-Vërmice motorway, where it was also decided to announce the final bid for the selection of the company to carry out the biggest road project in Kosovo.

The work should start no later than two months after the opening of the bid.

“We are continuing to be on track with the works dynamic. We have decided today to open the bid for beginning of construction. This will finally result in the winner of the Pristina-Vermice motorway construction,” said Limaj in a press conference following the inter-ministerial committee meeting.

The offer, which is valid for seven pre-qualified companies, according to Limaj will be open for 30 days starting from today.

The members of committee during this meeting have approved some of criteria which are going to be the basis for the offer. “Paperwork for the offer has been prepared in line with highest international standards,” said Limaj.

The winning company according to him will be selected based on the procurement criteria starting from the collection points of the most favorable price and the most technically favourable criteria.

The start of the works is another added criteria. According to the offer package, the company should be ready to start the works in the construction of highway 30 days from signing of the contract. “The timeframe for construction work has been foreseen to last no more than 36 months. This is the real term for completing the motorway”, said Limaj.

Kosovo signs the contract for highway construction

The Kosovo Government has signed a contract worth €700 million, with the American-Turkish consortium, "Bechtel & Enka" to construct the highway from Vermice to Merdare, which connects Kosovo with Albania in the south and Serbia in the north.

Funds for implementation of the project, according to Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, will be provided from the Kosovo budget, donors and loans.

On behalf of the Government, the contract was signed by the Transport Minister, Fatmir Limaj, and on behalf of the consortium "Bechtel & Enka”, Michael Adams and Sinan Tara.

The signing ceremony was also attended by the Ambassadors of United States, Great Britain and Turkey.

Prime Minister Thaci described this as a realization of Kosovo dream.

"This highway project Vermice-Prizren-Pristina-Merdare helps citizens by creating new opportunities of free movement and integrates Kosovo in the region," Thaci said.

According to the minister Limaj, with this highway Kosovo is linked with Europe and is becoming a more important factor in the region.

The construction work will begin in the first segment, from Vermice to Duhle.

Highway Vermice-Pristina-Merdare will be 28 meters wide, with two tracks of 3.75 meters, an emergency track of 2.5 meters and the green belt of 3 to 4 meters in between.

All yellow lines in Kosovo are temporary. White is the standard horizontal road marking color.

I wonder if there any plans of renumbering the roads in Kosovo with a new national system?

PS. I have the same question for Bosnia, Montenegro (and Serbia as well).

Interesting question, knowing the political situation between Kosovo and Serbia and the past Yugoslavia, I think Kosovo will want to make itself unique from Serbia and Ex-Yugoslavia. My answer - probably yes.

The roads are renumbered in Kosovo... national roads carry the letter M (M2, M9, etc.) and regional roads carry the symbol R (R209, R212, etc.) No idea about the motorway from Prizren to Prishtina, though it'll probably be A1.

Thanks for the answers.

M2, M9, M17, M25 etc. represent the old system (which I also find a bit silly with that Mxx-xx numbers here and there), so a change should be coming.
