Defile of Jiu National Park ![]() The defile of Jiu river, 33 km long, is one of most spectacular routes in country. The national park, with a surface of 111 km˛, protects the quasi-intact forests along the river, but the wilderness is extending much more, as the Carpathian Arc (70-120 km wide and 1000 km long in Romania) is compactly covered with forests. There are over 550 species of vascular plants including rare species, big carnivores (bear, wold, wild cat, lynx, vidra, marten), horned vipers as well as relict insects living in the centuries old trees. Church in Agârbiciu, Cluj County ![]() Built in 17th century and painted in 1818. At construction was used the wood from a previous church, at least two centuries older, from which a triptych made in 1555 remains. The proportions and style of the church is typical for Huedin - Sălaj area. There are 650 wooden churches in Transylvania an Banat, mostly concentrated in Maramureș, Bihor, Sălaj and Cluj, unfortunately, not all so well preserved. blogprinvizor.ro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Triptych from 1555 ![]() |

Dej / Dés / Desch ![]() The city lies at the crossroads of important railroads and highways linking it to Cluj-Napoca, Baia Mare, Satu Mare, Deda, Bistriţa, and Vatra Dornei. Dej is an old salt mining town built on a hilly ground. The first documents attesting the existence of this city go back to 1061. Massive salt reserves were found in the area in Roman times. The old mines were exhausted by 1717; the new mines are still in operation today. Some of the galleries of the salt mine are believed to be more than 15 kilometers long. The city's landmark is the Hungarian Reformed Church, built in the second half of the 15th century. The tower is 72 meters high. Peter Luidorf @ Picasaweb 1 2 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Jina and Poiana Sibiului, Mărginimea Sibiului ![]() Mărginimea Sibiului ("Sibiu's Vicinity") is an area which comprises 18 Romanian localities in the south-western part of the Sibiu County, in southern Transylvania, all of them having a unique ethnological, cultural, architectural and historical heritage. The area is situated in the immediate vicinity of the cradle of Saxon Civilisation in Transylvania - the city of Sibiu, and has an area of over 200 km˛ limited by the Sadu River in the south and the Sălişte river in the north. The villages are situated around the valleys of different rivers which flow from the Cindrel Mountains through the Transylvanian Plateau. The area has a rich variety of customs related to different times in the year and in life. To this day, it is a custom to wear the traditional folk costume - black and white, with a particular round shaped hat without borders worn by the men at the most important occasions. Painting on glass is a tradition in this area, strongly connected to the Romanian Orthodox Church which is by far the main religion of the inhabitants. The architecture is strongly influenced by the Saxons, with big imposing houses, with an internal yard well closed on all sides. Wood was traditionally the main material used in construction, but bricks have replaced it in the last hundred years; today, only a small number of wooden houses can be found. Jina is a village which strong pastoral traditions (perhaps the most famous in country in this respect) which, together with Poiana Sibiului, is different than most villages in Romania in that they are not situated on a valley but on top of a hill. xplorio.ro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Breite Reserve of Centuries Old Oak Tress, Sighișoara ![]() Breite Plateau is situated just outside Sighișoara, on the right of the road to Mediaș and Sibiu. Is the largest and most precious reserve of ancient trees in Romania. A number of over 450 centuries old oak trees are found here, most of them with age between 350-450 years. The oldest trees are have 800 years, almost like the city of Sighișoara itself. Because in middle age the forest was thined out, the trees developed huge coronas. The height of the trees is beteen 16-35 m with many 20-30 m tall. Most of the trees have a circumference of 4-5 m (400-500 cm) but there are many over this size too. The largest has a circumference of 930 cm (see first photo) being the biggest tree in southern Transylvania. On the plateau and surrounding forests there are bears, wolves and wild cats as well as other wild animals. Sighișoara is a fairy-tale city not only for its architecture but also for its location among these stunning forests and landscapes. Primeval,
Sometimes less is more... Doar parerea mea... In rest ptr. tot ce faci...
