MICE promotional push planned both domestically and overseas

THE NATION Published on December 10, 2009

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau yesterday launched a three-year operational plan for 2010-2012, with the goal of expanding the country's MICE business by 20 per cent per year.

The TCEB aims to promote meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition business both domestically and in international markets. It will work with government and private organisations to bring more MICE visitors to the country.

President Akapol Sorasuchart said the TCEB expected 700,000 MICE visitors this year, generating revenue of Bt52 billion.

"The first priority is to implement a short-term three-year plan. In 2010, the TCEB has been allocated a budget for the growth goal of 20-25 per cent in terms of both income and MICE visitors," he said.

Over the next three years, it expects MICE business to grow 20 per cent annually and that the number of visitors will also rise.

"The TCEB will certainly need cooperation from all parties, including MICE operators and all Thai people who can support us and warmly welcome our guests from around the world," said Akapol.

He added that the industry would play an important part in the country's economic recovery.

Domestic MICE is now firmly on the national agenda and receives strong support, with public and private organisations that hold conferences able to benefit from a 200-per-cent tax deduction on expenses.

In one of its overseas plans, the TCEB hopes the Kingdom will host the World Expo 2020. However, it needs to brainstorm the project's feasibility with government bodies and private operators before proceeding with a bid.

The TCEB will submit a proposal to the government within the first quarter of next year on whether to bid for the expo, said Akapol.

The agency has a budget of Bt749 million, of which Bt200 million is for supporting Royal Initiative Discovery Projects. The budget also covers bids for major events (Bt145 million), promotions and advertising (Bt240 million), development (Bt55 million) and operational costs (Bt100 million).

Mice visitors likely to be short of target

Bangkokpost Published: 21/12/2009 at 12:00 AM

The number of Mice visitors to Thailand is expected to increase by 10% next year to 691,518, generating revenue of 46.9 billion baht, according to the Thailand Incentive and Convention Association (TICA).

The forecast is lower than the 25% increase projected by the Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) recently.

Sumate Sudasna, the TICA president, said the global economic recovery would remain weak while local political tensions would persist next year. As a result, 25% growth for the Mice (meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition) industry would be hard to achieve.

TICA expects meeting and incentive visitors will grow by 10% but the convention and exhibition sector will not recover next year.

Mr Sumate said each Mice segment in 2010 would have different characteristics. The long-haul market including Western Europe is unlikely to recover until the last quarter of 2010 as global economic conditions remain weak.

However, visits from countries such as Singapore and Malaysia have begun picking up this year.

The association plans to talk with the TCEB about ways to stimulate the local Mice market and penetrate Eastern Europe, not only Russia.

"We think Eastern Europe has high potential to expand our Mice business because its economy is still growing. We will raise this issue with the TCEB," Mr Sumate said.

TICA will do research and ask the TCEB to organise familiarisation trips by Eastern European organisers to Thailand. "Western Europe will come back in the last quarter of 2010. We need new markets to fill up during the slowdown in Western Europe. If we can promote the Mice business in Eastern Europe next year, we think the visitors from the area will increase by 25% to almost 200,000, up from 160,000 this year," he added.

He also criticised a plan by the TCEB to host the World Expo 2020. "Actually, we want the country to organise World Expo but it may be too big for the country and we may waste the budget. We think we should turn back to focus on potential events even if they may be small, but we can develop them to become talk-of-the-town events by using creativity and the right promotions," said Mr Sumate.

TCEB asks for Bt1.4 bn budget

THE NATION Published on January 26, 2010

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau will today ask the Cabinet to approve a budget of Bt1.4 billion for 2011.

TCEB president Akapol Sorasuchart said yesterday that the funding would help the state agency promote the meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition (MICE) business next year.

TCEB expects the MICE business to recover this year so it needs 10 per cent more for next year's budget.

TCEB will host seminars on new media technologies for the MICE and service sectors, in line with the government's Creative Economy policy.

The programme will be formally launched during its Japan roadshow from Saturday-Wednesday.

TCEB aims to expand the range of available communication channels and content for the MICE industry, starting with updates on all activities forming part of the Japan roadshow.

"The Japan roadshow will boost awareness and confidence among the Japanese MICE industry and the broader business community in Thailand's readiness to support the MICE industry in all respects. This effort is led by Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kachornprasart, in cooperation with TCEB," he said.

Leading public and private sector representatives will band together to travel to Japan to join the event.

The Thai mission includes key public sector agencies such as the Immigration Bureau, Airports of Thailand, Customs Department, Tourism Authority of Thailand and Thai Airways International.

Top "MICE City" executives representing the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Chiang Mai City and Pattaya City would go along to help establish ideal "MICE Cities".

Japan ranks third in Asia in sending MICE visitors to Thailand, numbering 35,000 in 2008, who contributed Bt3 billion to the Thai economy.

This year, IP&C data indicate a high potential for the Japanese MICE market, with 5-per-cent growth.

This year TCEB expects Japanese MICE visitors to increase to 38,000, with revenues reaching up to Bt3.35 billion.

Furniture expo to continue the 'green living' theme

By THE NATION Published on February 6, 2010

More than 190 businesses will participate in next month's Thailand International Furniture Fair 2010 - TIFF 2010 - which is being held under the theme of "Living A Green Life". There will be 860 booths at the event, which will be held from March 10-14 at Impact Muang Thong Thani.

Co-organised by the Department of Export Promotion (DEP), the Furniture Industry Club of the Federation of Thai Industries, and the Thai Furniture Industries Association, it gives companies a chance to both exhibit their latest designs and seek business partnerships.

Srirat Rastapana, director-general off the DEP, said global concerns about climate change had driven designers around the world to create the concept of "green" furniture design in order to raise public awareness on global warming.

To capitalise on this new trend, the DEP has arranged this year's TIFF under the theme of "Living A Green Life". It is considered a fitting continuation to the "Imagine Green Living" theme of the previous event.

The fair, which will occupy more than 30,000 square metres, will be divided into two parts. During the first three days, TIFF will be open exclusively for the trade, after which the general public can visit.

Srirat described TIFF 2010 as the most comprehensive furniture expo ever staged in Thailand when taking into account the number of exhibitors, revolutionary furniture designs and the trade and business opportunities it will present to international visitors and exhibitors.

At the regional level, apart from Thai exhibitors, there will be booths from Malaysia, Indonesia, Burma, Laos and Cambodia.

The event is expected to welcome more than 33,000 international visitors from key markets such as Japan, the United States, the European Union, India, the Middle East, Africa, Canada, Australia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Japanese seek better conditions for Thai MICE

THE NATION Tokyo Published on February 8, 2010

While the Thai meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) sector is expected to recover this year, the government has been urged to improve some of the infrastructure and ease regulations, executives of Tokyo Big Sight and the Japan Exhibition Association said last week.

"Exhibition space in Southeast Asia will grow by 20 per cent this year, while space in Thailand will soon be four times bigger than in recent times," said Kenichi Shimada, president and chief executive officer of Tokyo Big Sight, Japan's largest convention hall.

He said MICE would be a key business driving economic growth throughout the region, and that the Japanese industry would be major part of that growth.

Christopher Eve, senior vice president of the Japan Exhibition Association, said exhibition activity was growing in Thailand.

The association has decided to move two major events originally scheduled for Singapore to Thailand due to business reasons.

Eve said Singapore and Thailand could both be prominent destinations for holding international events.

More small and medium-sized Japanese businesses will return to Thailand as the global economy recovers, he said.

"However, the Thai and Japanese languages are still barriers [to further growth] between the countries," said Eve, adding that Japanese exhibition operators also want to see better infrastructure and less stringent regulations in Thailand.

According to Kenichi, MICE business in Japan is changing from traditional business-to-business activity to business-to-customer, which could lead to both domestic and overseas growth.

Innovations in sectors such as energy and aviation are booming in Japan, which could help the economy recovery quickly after years in the doldrums.

Kenichi said Tokyo Big Sight had been a great success due to its good location, great accessibility, design and facilities that could serve all businessmen's needs. Its management is another plus factor, he said.

"In Japan, most exhibition halls are developed or invested in by the government and then left to the private sector to manage," he added.

Juerjan na Chiang Mai, operator of a Thai silver and handmade souvenirs business that is taking part in a gift show at Tokyo Big Sight, said her company had been a regular participant at the event for 10 years.

She said selling quality Thai products in Japan was relatively easy, as there was less competition than at home. The business could also gain from higher prices.

While the Japanese gift and souvenir market has slowed due to the economic downturn, she expects the situation will return to normal soon.

Thailand faces Hawaii, HK competition for MICE deals

The Nation Published on February 11, 2010

Thailand expects serious competition from Hawaii and Hong Kong for the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) business at the Asia-Pacific expo scheduled to held in Melbourne next month. Akapol Sorasuchart, president of Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), said that Hawaii was emerging as a new rival for MICE business because the famous island is focusing more on business travellers.

Being a holiday destination besides having other attractions to lure MICE visitors, Hawaii is in direct competition with Phuket.

Hong Kong continues to be a major rival and it is expected to employ more strategies to attract MICE business from around the world.

TCEB and MICE entrepreneurs are scheduled to attend the 18th Asia-Pacific Incentive & Meetings Expo (AIME) on March 2-3 in Melbourne.

The event is expected to attract about 6,000 visitors, business travellers, planners, and MICE event organisers from 50 countries, including 3,500 'hosted buyers' from leading companies around the world.

Akapol said Australia was a major potential market for Thailand's MICE industry.

TCEB is preparing to open up new markets under the Asean+6 free trade agreement by drafting guidelines to help Thailand's MICE operators to expand their markets.

He said Thai MICE operators could tap many new business and market opportunities, especially from face-to-face meetings with prospective clients from around the world at the expo.

"We expect to attract up to 5,000 business travellers to Thailand, generating revenues of up to US$7.6 million [Bt25 billion]," said Akapol.

TCEB plans to organise trade shows and road shows in high-potential markets in the Asean+6 region, particularly China, Japan, India, Australia and New Zealand.

According information from the Ministry of Commerce, Australia is Thailand 's sixth largest trading partner after Japan, China, US, Malaysia, and Singapore with bilateral trade worth Bt420 billion in 2008-2009.

TCEB: Oceania trade to grow 4.5%

Bangkokpost Published: 11/02/2010 at 12:00 AM

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau expects Mice business from Oceania will grow by 4.5% this year.

The Asean Free Trade Area agreement and the 18th AIME 2010 tourism fair will help increase the number of delegates coming to the country, said TCEB president Akapol Sorasuchart.

The number of meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition (Mice) delegates from Oceania will reach 50,000 with total revenue estimated at 4.5 billion baht this year.

AIME 2010, held in Melbourne, Australia from March 2-3, will be a key event for Thailand to market its Mice industry, especially meetings and incentive tourism.

Mr Akapol said the bureau planned to develop Thailand into one of Asia's key Mice destinations.

The TCEB is doing the groundwork on a strategy to respond to the proposed free trade framework among the Asean+6 countries - comprising Asean member states, plus China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand.

"Negotiations have made excellent progress so far," he said. "The agreement is expected to bring benefits, not only to Thailand's trade and overall economy, but also directly develop the country's Mice industry in terms of access to a much wider network of markets, particularly Australia and New Zealand."

The bureau will, in the first half of the year, focus on market development and building awareness of Thailand's Mice industry. This will include participating in trade and road shows held in high-potential markets within the Asean+6 region, he said.

Mr Akapol said the TCEB had a budget of 5-10 million baht for the Asean+6 promotion programme.

Australia is Thailand's sixth largest trading partner, after Japan, China, the US, Malaysia and Singapore, according to the Commerce Ministry. Bilateral trade was estimated at US$12.8 billion (420 billion baht) for fiscal 2008-09.

The TCEB will lead a delegation of meetings and incentive tourism operators to participate in AIME 2010. The event is expected to draw a total of 6,000 delegates from 50 countries, including 3,500 buyers from leading companies.

The TCEB expects 1,000 delegates to visit the Thai booth.

The bureau is confident that the Mice business will generate more than 250 million baht in revenue from the event.

According to the TCEB, about 786,000 Mice delegates will attend 400 events in Thailand this year generating 56.9 billion baht in revenue.

TCEB plans recovery package Violence cut Mice revenue by B3bn

Bangkokpost Published: 4/06/2010 at 02:34 AM

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau is preparing new recovery plans for the meetings industry which has chalked up revenue losses in excess of 3 billion baht from the recent political unrest.

The recent violence has led the TCEB to cut its projection for the Mice (meetings, incentives, conventions, exhibitions) industry's growth this year to zero from 25%. Last year, the sector generated about 45 billion baht in revenue from 620,000 visitors.

The recovery package for the sector will focus on further stimulating the domestic market, developing creative Mice, a new road map for tourism to cope with the short- and long-term challenges from the recent turmoil, and Thai New Team, a programme to build relationships among all parties.

TCEB president Akapol Sorasuchart said the bureau would establish a new mobile unit for the domestic market which would set up booths at state agencies and commercial buildings to promote Mice packages designed by the private sector. The project will run from next month to September.

This month the bureau will introduce telesales service and an online portal, www.meetinginthailand.com.

The TCEB also plans to organise familiarisation trips to rebuild tourism confidence, with the first event organised at the Ratchaprasong intersection.

Under the ``Creative Mice'' scheme, the bureau will hold domestic roadshows, including events in Chiang Mai and Phuket.

Mr Akapol said the TCEB was scaling down its plans to organise international roadshows. But it will continue its activities in certain markets, especially China which it projects will be the firstof Thailand's big international visitor markets to recover.

The bureau will also meet with the government and private sector on June 28 to hold a brainstorming sessions for the new road map and related promotional Mice packages.

``We will work harder together with other business partners and other related parties such as Thai Airways International and the Board of Investment,'' he said.

Despite the recent riots which have damaged the country's image, Thailand is committed to bidding for the World Expo 2020, he said.

TCEB pools efforts to create road map for Mice recovery

Bangkokpost Published: 30/06/2010 at 12:00 AM

The Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) is working with private operators to complete a road map to improve the Thai meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition industry (Mice).

TCEB president Akapol Sorasuchart said the bureau yesterday held a discussion with 10 Mice operators to draft a preliminary road map and plans to get more opinions from other players to develop a national agenda in the near future.

The industry wants to achieve 620,000 visitors and 45 billion baht in revenues in 2010, on par with last year.

The TCEB hopes to stimulate the domestic Mice sector, especially among corporate clients, while looking for new potential overseas markets. The bureau will provide a one-stop meeting planning service and hopes to maintain several of its traditional customers.

Mr Akapol said it will offer incentives to spur return customers and restore their confidence.

"We still need to educate government officers and staff of relevant organisations in the Mice industry and update information that is beneficial to both the public and private sectors," he said.

A committee of economic ministers approved a 40-million-baht budget for the TCEB to conduct marketing programmes.

Mr Akapol said the government has some misconceptions that the budget related to tourism-rescue measures helps the Mice industry.

"Mice and tourism are quite different and so are their marketing campaigns. The TCEB needs to develop its own database to explain this to government," he said.

Mice visitors account for about 6% of the projected total of 14 million visitors. However, the spending of each Mice visitor is 62,500 baht per trip, which is five times higher than the spending of an ordinary tourist.

The TCEB may have to divert some money from its own budget to support Mice marketing campaigns. The budget will be spent on organising a familiarisation trip for foreign journalists and a forum for foreign executives involved in the Mice industry. Both events are scheduled before September.
