"Little Rio" - one of the most beautiful cities

Recently I visited again one of the most beautifully settled places... LUGANO in the north of Metro Milano. The city has only some 58'000 inhabitants, together with the suburbs 130'000. But it's the center of the so-called Metro Ticino (Como-Chiasso - Lugano - Bellinzona - Locarno) which is inhabited by some 380'000 people. Urban sprawl is a big problem here because a lot of houses and buildings are hotels and holliday houses...

Unfortunatly just on this day the weather was not the best, so please forgive some picture qualities.

Lombardian rennaissance meets modernism - Lugano has not only the highest density of banks in the world, also a lot of famous architects origin from the Ticino since 500 years. That's why it's called "Land of the 100 architects"

Hidden beauties

Let's take a trip up Monte San Salvatore (the Pao Acucar of Lugano) to have an overview

Here we are on the top...

Taking a good look around... sorry it was quite foggy

Down in the city again - some buildings in Paradiso

Let's take a boat...

...say goodbye to San Salvatore...

...and hello to Gandria. A former fisher village and now a Quartiere of Lugano - only reachable by boat. Okay since 70 years there is also a road above the town but there are no busses going there.

There are no streets in Gandria, only some gates and lots of stairs. So as there is no traffic, the life is out there on the little squares and paths

Since the mid 20th century tourism became the main business for the town dwellers - but also a lot of artists settled down here

Back to the city center by boat - passing the villas of the rich on Monte Bre

Even some seem to be for sale... hmm... you know where to find me

Well it's ME who call it Little Rio, it's not the official term... but it always reminds me of Rio - but fortunatly only by landscape and settling. Rio was quite a disappointment for me, especially the people

Nice city!
I saw Lugano from the plane to Nice, but didn't discover what city it was until I looked at Google Earth when I came home.

Cool pic!

Sorry about Rio... well too much bad experiences from cabdrivers that were nearly killing each other over driving us to the hotel (and tried to push our taxi off the road in the end) over nasty salespeople on the beach that try to cheat everyone they see to everyone that asks for the double price of simple things as you would pay in Sampa. But I am not the only one. My wife once was there alone and they told her this stuff cost so and so much - she said, sorry I am not a tourist, I come from Sampa, I know the prices - he just responded: then you are also a tourist, so what, pay this price or let it be.

But it's not only Rio - Paris is the same and other places in the world where people think they are the best and most important and live in the center of the world and because of that have all the rights

Sorry, was only there twice and must say: absolutly beautiful city but with the people I just had some problems...
