Venezuela Telemag

Caracas – La Guaira : A maglev train has been proposed to connect the capital city Caracas to the main port town of La Guaira and Simón Bolívar International Airport . No budget has been allocated, pending definition of the route, although a route of between six and nine kilometres has been suggested. The proposal envisages that, initially, a full-sized prototype train would be built with about one kilometre of test track.

In proposing a maglev system, its improved life and performance over mechanical engines were cited as important factors, as well as improving comfort, safety, economics and environmental impact over conventional rail.

Barquisimeto (07/05/05, 14/04/06 and 10/08/06, 25/12/06, 25/04/07, 10/12/07, 15/08/08)

The government has ambitious plans for goods traffic. The line from Puerto Cabello to Barquisimeto (province Lara) with a length of 173 km is to be be modernised under the designation "Ferrocarril Bolívar". On this line it is also planned to operate passenger trains. As the present stock consists of only twelve coaches, additional coaches are to be ordered. A photo reportage about the new construction of the Símon Bolívar station can be found under http://www.mci.gob.ve/fotoreportajes...s_despues.html.

In the mean time five multiple-unit trains with two motor coaches each and each with space for three hundred passengers and equipped with toilets and air conditioning have arrived at Barquisimeto. Furthermore 152 flat cars for containers and large size goods, 42 special cars for wheat transport of maximum 58 tons and six covered goods cars as well as eight diesel locomotives, all of chinese manufacture, have arrived.

The trains that have arrived so far are now being the subject of intensive tests. In Barquisimeto there is a track of 1600 m length for this purpose. Later tests will follow with higher speeds on a section of the 5 km line between Yaritagua and Acarigua.

the trains are most likely capable of 160km/h. Note that the description said the average speed of the trip was 120km/h. That is very different from rated speed.

I'm always happy to see infrastructure being built anywhere. Especially in developing countires like Venezuela.

Good job guys, and God bless you all. May this be one of your first steps towards a magnificant railroad network.

New Puerto Cabello – La Encrucijada railway line
Having developed the final design for the civil engineering for the El Palito-La Encrucijada route and pre-design for the infrastructure and railway works on the Moron-Porto Puerto Cabello intermodal link (27km), Italferr is completing the final and executive design for the railway works on the El Palito-La Encrucijada line.

The El Palito-La Encrucijada route is part of the development planned for a more complex multi-modal freight and passenger transport system which must integrate the different requirements and modes of transport via the creation of logistics centres and terminals both railway (dry ports) and maritime (terminal and container), to interact with road transport.

The line will link the country’s main port (Puerto Cabello) with the big industrial and agro-food centres of Valencia and Maracay. At a later stage, a link is planned with the towns of San Juan de los Morros, Calabozo and Cabruta, which is the main port on the Orinoco-Apure river axis. The railway line will in future also be linked to the Caracas-Tuy Medio route, which is part of the same railway system.

The new railway’s 109km, which, following international standards shall be double track with a maximum speed of 200km/h, crosses through fifteen tunnels (36km overall) the mountainous part of the path, and also twenty-six bridges and fifty-two viaducts (18km overall), to enable an uninterrupted link.

The project includes development of seven passenger stations, two dry ports, two line and rolling stock maintenance facilities.

Italferr is working on behalf of Consorcio Gruppo Contuy, which has been entrusted with completion of the works by the Instituto Autónomo de Ferrocariles del Estado (IAFE).

New Valle del Tuy-Puerto Cabello (Venezuela) rail -link
Italferr has provided technical assistance for all activities linked to the railway concession of the Colombian Atlantic Network that include the building of the new rail link between Colombia and Venezuela.

Technical, operational and construction assistance has centred around the full rehabilitation and corresponding operation of freight transport from the railway route that links the port of Buenaventura, to La Felisa, passing through major towns such as Yumbo, Calì, Palmira, Buga and Cartago. The route, of an overall length of 500km, crosses a mountain region for 160km.

The activity, carried out on behalf of the franchisee for the Pacific Rail Network (Tren de Occidente), was completed in 2004.

RAILWAY TRANSPORT SYSTEM OF THE CENTRAL REGION: PUERTO CABELLO TO LA ENCRUCIJADA CONNECTION

Employer: IAFE Instituto Autónomo de Ferrocarriles del Estado
Contractor: Consorcio Grupo Contuy, with IMPREGILO S.p.A. Partner (33.33%)
Construction period: July 2002 - March 2013
Work description:
The section Puerto Cabello – La Encrucijada (Cagua) is part of a more multi-modal and articulated transportation network of freights and passengers. It will encourage, through an integrated way, the various transport requirements and modalities through the creation of commercial centres and logistic hubs, therefore to be considered as meeting point of transports on wheels, rail and maritime transports (Interports). During the first stage of works, the above said section will connect the principal port of the country (Puerto Cabello) to the industrial, agricultural and food poles of Valencia and Maracay. The next step of the project will be a rail connection between the cities of San Juan de Los Morros, Calabozo and Cabruta, which is the principal port of the river transportation network Orinoco–Apure. This new rail line will be connected, in the next future, with the rail line section Caracas–Tuy Medio, which is part of the Central Region Railway Transport System.

The new rail line network, which develops for approx. 109.81km, crosses the mountainous section of the route with 15 tunnels (total length 27.97km). Sections concerned by embankments are more than 67.23km in length, mostly in semi-hilly areas (earthmoving works volume over 14,500,000m³), why bridges and viaducts are more than 78 (total length 14.61km), allowing therefore a direct route without any interference. The new double track rail section design followed the international standards, with international gauge of 1.435m allowing a maximum speed comprised between 140 and 180 km/h.

The contract included either the executive design of both line plants and installations together with the rail systems and the execution of the civil works.
In order to meet the passenger’s needs it has been foreseen the construction of seven rail stations, why for goods and freight services (supply, distribution and commercialisation of goods) as well for rolling stock maintenance service specific warehouses and workshops will be constructed.

Main project technical features relevant to the project civil works
The project foresaw the construction of the following structures:
Fifteen tunnels, for an overall length of 27.97km, having an excavation cross-section varying from 86 to 104m².
Twenty-six bridges and fifty-two viaducts, for an overall length of 14.61km. Bridges structures are made of steel beams with an upper concrete deck.
The construction of the new rail line has also required more than 82,000m² of diaphragm walls with tie-rods. More than 68,000m of anchors and bars have been utilised together with 218,000m of tie rods (20 to 60 tons).
Main quantities:
Excavation works volume 3,400,000 m3
Embankment 11,060,000 m3
Concrete works volume 160,000 m3
Underground excavation works 2,445,000 m3
Tunnel concrete lining works 483,000 m3
