All tracks have been poured for the trams. I think most of the trams are here now, doing extensive testing.

With an average speed of 20km/h, I would hardly call it a rapid transit network and with a price of $1.6 Billion the project hardly seems worth while.

You can't expect better speed for a regular tram line. They always tend to be kind of slow when mixed with the road traffic. An independend line - like premetro/Stadtbahn or a real LRT would be better option.

It's a separated line (in its own lanes) with traffic light priority. It should be readily able to do the journey in under 30 minutes/26 km/h average (based on equivalent European precedents) but until trams are able to run the full line we won't know if the projection can be improved upon. As it stands, there is a myriad of ever-changing speed limits along the line. I think these need to be ironed out.

The $1.6 billion is a total project cost including urban improvements, service relocations etc. The actual cost of the tramway, although still high (typical Australian project costs), is much less than this.

Fully aware of that, however, if you know the UK, the spot he suggested was completely inappropriate.

A tram traversed the entire stretch of the route under its own power for the first time yesterday.

Opening is still on target for 2-4 months from now depending on how long the final stages of the fit out and commissioning process takes.

The company operating the Gold Coast light rail system says there is still no specific starting date for passenger services

Trams have been involved in test runs between Southport and Broadbeach for some months and there had been speculation the public service would have started in June.

GoldLinQ's Jason Ward says there is still some work to be done.

"We need to tick off the things we need to [do] in our contract and make sure we are compliant and we're safe and the Government is happy to accept the system and once we do that the Government will announce an opening day," he said.

Mr Ward says the company had not specified a date.

"GoldLinQ has only ever said mid-2014, it's very difficult to put a date on these things, particularly three years ago when we were developing the work program," he said.

"To pick a date is quite difficult, it is still mid-2014, we have a few things to finish off and we are a matter of weeks away."

Expansion options

The Queensland Opposition Leader says the Government should indicate what recommendations it has about expanding the light rail network.

Annastacia Palaszczuk visited the Gold Coast yesterday to highlight that it was a Labor government project.

Ms Palaszczuk says the former government wanted information on expansion options.

"As the former transport minister we knew that eventually down the track in years to come there could be the possibility of expanding the Gold Coast rapid light rail, so therefore I commissioned a further study to be undertaken to look at those two options," she said.

"I urge the Transport Minister, if those studies are complete, please release them so the Gold Coast residents can see them first-hand."

Safety message

Meanwhile, Ms Palaszczuk says she supports GoldLinQ's release of a safety video.

The video is on the company's website and details how people should interact with the trams.

There have already been collisions between trams and cars and some motorists have driven onto the rail system.

Ms Palaszczuk says it is not a case of too little too late with the video.

"I think that's great that the safety message is going out there, we all need to observe the safety principles and make sure that people are hopping on and off the trams in the right way," she said.

"So it's the right message and we need to make sure that people understand those safety messages before it officially commences."

The system will carry its first passengers on Sunday 20 July 2014 during a free "exhibition" day. Revenue services will commence on Monday 21 July 2014. The bus services which currently ply the tram route will operating in parallel with in-service trams on 20 July only, and then will be decommissioned with the resources reinvested elsewhere in the bus network from the following day so it feeds the tram line.

PASSENGERS boarded the G: for the first time today, enjoying free rides on the new light rail system between the Gold Coast University Hospital station in Southport and Broadbeach South station.

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson, Federal Member for Moncrieff Steven Ciobo and Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate thanked Gold Coast people for their patience during the two-year construction period for the $1.2 billion project.

"With the G20 and 2018 Commonwealth Games just around the corner, the Gold Coast is now in a good position to show off one of Queensland's best holiday destinations," Mr Emerson said.

"The light rail will give local residents far more than a world-class public transport network. Light rail has a proven track record for revitalising cities by connecting people and places, and attracting investment."

Federal Member for Moncrieff Steven Ciobo said the Australian Government had invested $365 million in the $1.2 billion project.

"The Gold Coast Rapid Transit delivers a modern, integrated light rail system that helps meet the transport needs of Australia's sixth largest city," Mr Ciobo said.

"This project is a perfect example of a public-private partnership delivering the infrastructure this country needs for a more prosperous future.

"In peak periods, each light rail vehicle will be able to carry 309 passengers, which is the equivalent of 6 buses."

Mayor Tom Tate said the project was Queensland's first light rail system and the first for any regional city in Australia.

"It is an exciting time for the Gold Coast and I am confident this project will drive new investment and more local jobs. It is important for everybody to get behind the G:link and make public transport a part of everyday life," Mr Tate said.

"I'm really excited about the opening and the future of this important piece of city-building infrastructure."

The Queensland Government contributed $464 million to this project, the Australian Government contributed $365 million and the Gold Coast City Council provided $120 million to the project, with the GoldLinQ consortium also investing in the project.

The free light rail rides will run every seven and a half minutes between Southport and Broadbeach on Sunday 20 July 2014.

Light rail services thereafter will run as per the GoldLinQ timetable from 5am to 11.50pm Monday to Thursday and 24 hours on Friday and Saturday.

Congrats from one "Gold Coast" to another on your new Light Rail system! The cost is rather astronomical though for a 13k /8.1 mile system at $1.2 billion. That is almost $150 million per mile which is close to heavy rail systems here in the US.

It's actually pretty cheap for Australia. Especially considering just down the road in Brisbane they spent $700million on a 1km long busway.
